Roxburghshire / Cairns Family
« on: Monday 16 September 13 23:08 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone can help me trace what happened to the following family.   Agnes Cairns was the mother and she had three illegitimate children.   Jane born Ancrum 1866, James born Roxburgh 1874 and Thomas born 1880 at Ancrum.   Agnes their mother was an Ag. Labourer.   I have not been able to find Jane after the 1881 Census.   At that time she was staying with her mother and brothers and grandparents at Broom Farm Cottage near Ancrum.   Thereafter I cannot trace her.   Agnes and the boys I cannot find after 1891 when they are living at Lanton Mill Cottages.   Agnes's mother Jane Cairns(she was Jane Chisholm) is living there with them too.  Jane (the mother) died soon after so they must have moved away somewhere.

Any help much appreciated as there might be something very obvious that I am missing.

Armed Forces / 12th Regiment of Foot
« on: Friday 27 April 12 18:18 BST (UK)  »
I've just discovered that my husband's great great grandfather served in the 12th Regiment of Foot between 1844 and 1853.   I have his attestation paper which I downloaded last night.   It mentions that he served in Mauritius (nearly 5 years)and Cape of Good Hope (nearly 2 years).   That's all fine but when I was trying to find out more about the 12th it all gets a bit confusing.   Is this all the regiment is called or is it sometimes called something else.  Can anyone help and would anyone know the best place to do some more research on what was happening with the regiment at that time.

Moderator - hope this is the correct place for this query - if not I would be obliged if you could direct me to where it should be.
Thank you in advance. :)  Brina

Buckinghamshire / Anne Cairns
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 22:19 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone can help me.   I have the death certificate for an Anne Cairns (although she was listed as Annie on her birth certificate) who died on 17th September 1990 at Chesham Hospital Chesham.   I am trying to find some more information about her and I wonder if there would have been an announcement in any of the local newspapers.   She lived in Asheridge Road, Chesham.

Does anyone have any ideas or clues please?

Scotland / Annie Cairns-where did she go?
« on: Wednesday 31 August 11 22:20 BST (UK)  »
I've posted this here rather than Roxburghshire or Selkirkshire - hope that was correct.

Having trouble locating my grandmother's half sister who was Annie Cairns. I have a copy of her birth certificate and she was born on 30 March 1912 at Shaws Farm in the Parish of Kirkhope in the County of Selkirk in Scotland. There is no named father on the cert. Her mother, Jemima, then went on to marry my great grandfather but Annie was brought up by her grandparents and the last record I have of her is when she notified her grandfather's death (Thomas Cairns) in Denholm, Roxburghshire. She signed the death certificate as Annie Cairns in 1935.

Family story is that Annie left Denholm and moved down south (England) to be a housekeeper for a doctor but I do not know if this is true or where she went to. My father heard that she moved back to Scotland to Haddington when she was an old lady but again this may not be correct. I do not know when she died though. Cannot find her death and of course although we were told she had never married this may not be the case.

Grateful for any ideas as to where I go from here or maybe it will always be a mystery.  :-\

World War One / WW1 prisoners of war
« on: Tuesday 12 April 11 23:08 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find out where my grandfather was taken as a prisoner of war but I have only been able to find his medal record and the information on that is exceptionally brief.   Unfortunately I cannot find his service record, his must be one of those which was destroyed.   It is interesting that I cannot find any of the young men in our family who fought in that war, all of their records are missing.   Would anyone be able to advise me?   I did think that perhaps I should wade through the Battalion/Company diaries as he was in the Northumberland Fusiliers.   I am sure that this question must have been asked over and over again so please forgive me for probably repeating it.

Midlothian / Property conundrum
« on: Tuesday 09 March 10 22:41 GMT (UK)  »
My g-g-g grandfather Andrew Douglas Whellans died at 28 Candlemaker Row in Edinburgh in 1881 where he was a lodging house keeper. He was 75 years old.  In his will he mentioned some property in Canongate but did not give any details as to what number or type of property this was.   He also owned property in Hawick and Morebattle in Roxburghshire and I know exactly where they were.   It would appear that he did not own the lodging house.

What intrigues me is why someone of his age was still working as a lodging house keeper when he owned all this property.   I have tried to find out where no 28 Candlemaker Row was and cannot see where, even after walking up and down the street.  Would the numbers in 1881 still run the same way as they do today?   How can I find out what property he owned in Canongate at that time?

Andrew's previous occupation was as a grocer in Hawick before he moved to Edinburgh.

Any ideas very welcome.

Roxburghshire / Martha Cowan
« on: Wednesday 11 November 09 20:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find Martha Cowan who was born to Frances Jane Cowan at Under Burnmouth in the Parish of Castleton in 1895. Martha's mother died in 1899 and Martha lived with her stepfather John James Irving and in the 1901 census she is listed as Martha Cowan Irving. Any help gratefully received. :)

Roxburghshire / CHISHOLM/ELLIOT
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 17:57 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering if someone has already carried out some research on the Chisholm & Elliot family that I am interested in.

Jane Cairns (ms Chisholm) was married to James Cairns.
Jane died 1/8/1891 aged 83 at Lanton Mill Farm near Jedburgh.   Her death certificate indicates that her father was Andrew Chisholm (gamekeeper - deceased) and mother Catherine Chisholm m s Elliot).   Census results indicate that Jane was born at Roberton in Roxburghshire.

Now this is fine until I try to find out about Andrew and Catherine Chisholm and I am presuming that they are the people I found on the 1841 Census living at Kirkton near Hawick

They are: -

Andrew Chisholm 65 Carrier
Catherine 60
Andrew 40 Pensioner
Thomas 30
Catherine Anderson 15

In the 1851 Census there is

Catherine Chisholm 72 Pauper  Born Ewes, Dumfries
Andrew Chisholm 52 Pensioner 72nd Highlanders born Roberton, Roxburghshire
Nancy Scott 20 Agricultural Labourer

As you can see Thomas has disappeared and I cannot seem to find him anywhere.
Andrew, the father has disappeared and I presume he died.

Catherine then died in January 1859 and her son Andrew died in November of the same year.   Both were buried at Borthwick Walls.

Catherine's father is listed on her death certificate as Thomas Elliot, farmer - no mother details given.
Both mother and son died at Coggs Mill near Hawick.

The person who registered Andrew's death was William Riddle (Uncle by Law).

Can anyone help me confirm that I am on the correct track or does anyone have any more information on this family?

Many thanks. :)
