Isle of Man / John Cowin (c1802-1869) & Margaret Clague (c1808-c1884)

Hello from Downunder

I descend from Patrick Cowin (1755-1827) of Ballcannell, Lonan and Alice Clague and am part of the Australian branch of this large family. I am happy to share the copious Oz info that I have.

Current Problem: A Cowin family (see Subject for the early ones, they married 1825 at Braddan) moved to Mauritius and then split - one branch to South Africa, the other to South Australia. Research suggests this branch is also descended from Patrick Cowin but I cannot establish how. My Cowins/Clagues seem to have been strong around Braddan, Douglas and Lonan.

I am sure that if I knew the parents of both John and Margaret, it might solve the problem. Can any kind person out there help?

Cheers, Ross of Canberra

Cork / LAMBERT Family of Cork
« on: Sunday 22 March 09 01:01 GMT (UK)  »
G'day

I am descended from Alexander Methuen Lambert (b 1824 Queenstown, Cork) who came to Australia, probably in 1849. His father MAY have been William Lambert (b1807 Cork) and his mother Ann Carr - married c1832. He may have had connections to Wiltshire but that is speculation.

If anyone can help me on tracing the origins of Alexander or his wider Lambert family I would be very appreciative. I can provide much on my Lamberts in Australia.

Best wishes, Ross of Canberra

Family History Beginners Board / Captain Orry COWIN of Mauritius

Hi

I am looking for more information on the Cowin family of Mauritius, South Africa and Australia.

There were Cowins in shipping in Mauritius at least by the 1880s and Mr John Cowin, who died in 1895, was the first surveyor to Lloyd’s Register in Mauritius. Later, the Managing Director of the Cowin company was Mr T J Cowin who was also a director of La Flore Mauricienne, a well-known restaurant.

My cousin Arthur Bottrell left an obscure note in his papers that read: "Our Orry Cowin, sea captain and Commander in the RN, spent his retirement in South Africa with visits to his brother in Mauritius until his death in 1954 aged over 70. Cared for by his niece Iris Howard of Fishhock, Cape Province.”

In the census of 1881, a Thomas J Cowin is recorded as being 13 years of age, born 1868 Mauritius, a scholar and residing with a William Perry at Low Leyton, Essex. William had been born in Surrey, was married and his occupation a mariner. Also present was an Orry A de Lissa Cowin, a 9 year old scholar born in 1872 at Beau Bassin BS (boat station?), Mauritius. The boarders may well have been brothers.

I can find very little extra information on this family except that a William Cowin and wife Adela Janet Willmott came to South Australia in the 1880s and their eldest child Thomas Alexander Cowin was born c1877 at Mauritius. It suggests the families were linked.

Hoping someone can help.

Cheers, Ross of Canberra

Family History Beginners Board / COWIN Family of Lonan, Isle of Man

Hi

My first post to this forum!

I descend from Philip Cowin born Lonan 1809 to Thomas Cowin and Margaret Karran who married at Lonan in 1806. Thomas is thought to have been born at Onchan in 1781.

Philip and family went to Victoria in 1852 to find gold and he found an early death instead. His widow (Margaret Garrett married Lonan 1843) and children settled in South Australia and later generations Western Australia.

If anyone can help on the early origins of these Manx families I would love to hear from you.

Cheers, Ross of Canberra
