Armed Forces / Help needed to track a relative possibly in the navy??
« on: Friday 03 May 13 14:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have a relative born June 1938 in Birmingham, named Joseph Eric Hanson (his birth name was Weake)

I have what I believe is a service number - 93423, was written as DJ/93423, d/j93423 and also DSS/93423, it may or may not have a 1 on the end of the number.

In an address book belonging to him, he has listed HMS Eagle, HMS Mess. Drake? and HMS Anchorite for returning the book to him if it was lost. He had o/sea and AB written before his name for returning the book.

There are some other number/letter combinations, such as 2t2 and J63.

He was married in Dunoon, Scotland and may have been stationed there. Was divorced in Plymouth, so may have been stationed there also.

Have had a look on the national archives site, but no luck.

Can anyone give me a hand?
Thanks

Angus (Forfarshire) / Jane Irvine - When did she die?
« on: Friday 09 December 11 23:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help.

I have a Jane Irvine, born 10 Oct 1888 in Glasgow - parents are Joseph Irvine and Margaret McNeilly.

I know she had at least 3 children - James (dob unknown) Mary (dob unknown) and Helen Irvine (born - 3rd may 1909 in Dundee - died in 1968 in Dundee)

She was recorded on the 1891 and 1901 census' in Glasgow, but obviously moved to Dundee at some point.

Problem is I cannot find a record of her death. Spent loads of credits on SP, but no luck :( Hoping someone could look at it with fresh eyes.

Thanks

Armed Forces / Boer War - Records?
« on: Wednesday 20 October 10 09:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I  am looking for an ancestor for my Mother In Law - Thomas Gibson Born 1881 - My Mother in Law found a certificate of Freemanship for the city of Glasgow in an old purse of her Granny's - she is going to scan it later so that I can see it too. Apparently he fought in the Boer War.

There are no regimental numbers on the cert - how on earth do I go about finding some record of him?

Many Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation Help please
« on: Monday 18 October 10 12:12 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to determine if this is 'my' Robert Malcolm.

I have a Robert Malcolm born c1827, son of Gabriel Malcolm and Jane Malcolm (Graham) He appears on quite a few of his sister (Marion)'s certificates - often as the informant - stating he is the Uncle. I found him on the 1861 census with his Mother Jean/Jane and his siblings - Marion, Colin D and Gabriel.

I was hoping someone decipher what it says under his name where the occupation is and then tell me what his Father's occupation is - I can make out what looks like 93, but that's it.

I am not sure if this Is my Robert Malcolm as it lists his Father's name as Gilbert - when I have always had his Father down as Gabriel...

Thanks very much

I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what it says in the column about Parent's names. All I can make out is 'reputed father' :(

Any help appreciated

Occupation Interests / Merchant Service Record - can someone help me ??Hi
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 11:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have a merchant Service record for a John Henry Dougan, who may or may not be the ancestor I am looking for. I bought it from TNA and haven't a clue as to what is going on here. It just seems to be a couple of numbers and details of ribbons issued?

Is someone able to read it and tell me if there are any clues as to go about finding out more about this man. I can see that it says 698 New City Road, Glasgow - after a quick look on Google - there is not much of the original street left - was this a Merchant Service building address or more likely the Seaman's home address?

Thanks very much

Fife / Pratts in Fife.
« on: Friday 08 October 10 17:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I am having a bit of a dilemma with the Pratt Family.

I have a Helen Pratt born c1835. Parents are listed on her marriage cert as John Pratt and Catharine Dickson.
I looked up the marriage cert for Pratt and Dickson on SP and found them in 1832 marrying in Kilconquhar, Fife. I get a link to a tree on Ancestry and I begin by finding a census with the whole family - siblings I never knew about.

The problem arises when I find a Peter Robertson born c1865 on the 1871 census - listed as John Pratt's Grandson. So, a quick search on SP reveals that Helen Pratt is the mother. Problem is - I have her down as marrying a James young in 1861 and they had a child together in 1855 - Peter Pratt Young.

On Peter Robertson's birth cert it lists Helen Pratt as the Mother and John Robertson as the Father - the two are married. The informant on the birth cert is Catherine Pratt (this is a match to her mother's name) - Grandmother. So I start to think that my Helen Pratt must have remarried, despite marrying James Young in 1861.

However, I look up the marriage cert for Helen Pratt and John Robertson, and its completely different. Her parents are listed as David Pratt and Janet Cork - no Catherine there!?!?!

Now, I am completely confused.

Can anyone help??
