Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / No DNA match, mother to gr grandmother
« on: Saturday 23 March 24 22:00 GMT (UK)  »
My mum’s great grandmother, Jane Brown, supposedly was born in 1811 (Belfast, Ireland). Jane had at least one sibling, Esther Hadessah Brown, born 1805.  Esther was the mother of three children; at least two children had children of their own, etc. Both women immigrated to Canada c1830s (or earlier).  Nothing is known about any other siblings, their parents, or any other older relatives.  [Note: we have found (full?) details about the sisters’ lives after 1832.  There are several trees on Ancestry for Esther, and of course for Jane.]

While my mother has several Ancestry DNA matches to descendants of Jane and her husband, William Ellison, I have not found any DNA matches between my mum and any of Esther’s descendants.  Nor have I found any matches for the sisters’ possible siblings or parents.  I’ve searched for details about their lives in Ireland, and posted threads about them; the sisters have remained elusive prior to immigrating to North America.  I am hoping that if I find a match, I could learn more about any siblings or the sisters’ parents/other relatives.

Is it likely that the gap between my mother and the “older” relatives/ancestors is just too great to show any matches - or,
“enough” DNA just wasn’t passed down for non-Jane matches,
Esther’s descendants may not have tested their DNA,
Jane and Esther didn’t share parents?

Thank you very much for reading the above.  Lisa

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Matches “By Parent”, “Plus”: Both Sides
« on: Saturday 16 March 24 22:16 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies for asking what is most likely a simple question, but I would like to make sure I understand something.  :-\

Using Ancestry website, in DNA matches is the capability to search
By Parent
PLUS - Both Sides

Looking at my brother’s results for the above search, there are over 60 matches (most are 5th - 8th cousin).  After a quick look, I don’t recognize any matches that I’ve previously run across and almost all of the results have never been viewed before.  The silly question part: Do the results mean that the 60+ matches are from both of our parents, either by actual ancestor or by marriage?  If so, might this be a typical amount of matches or is it a bit high (or low).  To my knowledge, my parents’ ancestors did not live “near” each other with the exception of my Stuart/Fowley ancestors who lived two Irish counties away from my mother’s ancestors.  Note: my mother’s ancestors arrived in Ontario, Canada between c1810 and c1855 (one couple did arrive c1870) and my father’s ancestors arrived (same place) in c1840, 1857, and c1870.

Thank you in advance for any guidance.  Lisa

Added: of course, once my ancestors arrived in Canada, they lived in the same province, generally within 20 miles (or closer) of each other.  Prior to their arrivals, most of my mother’s ancestors were in Ireland, and most of my father’s ancestors were in England.  I’ve not yet found any marriages or any connection between my parents’ ancestors in Canada.

Canada / F. Ibbotson, Toronto, Ontario, 1910-1916
« on: Monday 11 March 24 03:33 GMT (UK)  »
I’m wondering, please, if there might be any newspaper articles c1910-1916 about Frederick Ibbotson, born 1888 or 1889, Oshawa, Ontario.  He worked for an advertising agency, Grip Limited, in Toronto, Ontario.  I’m wondering if his artwork was ever mentioned.  Thank you, Lisa

[We have full details/records about Frederick and his family - I’m just wondering if anything about his drawings was ever published.]

The Common Room / Question for artists, please, re drawing images
« on: Sunday 10 March 24 21:17 GMT (UK)  »
A distant relative supposedly drew an image (a little girl holding an umbrella) c1912.  He drew roughly the same image in the early 1930s.  Might there be any way to determine if he was the original artist of the 1912 drawing by comparing brushstrokes, small details, etc., or if he simply copied the 1912 image?  Thank you, Lisa

Cork / 1901 & 1911 census ages don’t match
« on: Friday 08 March 24 07:36 GMT (UK)  »
I’m trying to find a family living in County Cork (around 1900-1911). Due to privacy issues, I prefer not to share names, etc.; I hope that is ok.

In 1901, the parents are recorded as ages 56 and 45.  In 1911, they are recorded as 73 and 60.  One son did age by 10 years from 1901 to 1911.  The other children apparently left home by 1911.

Was it common for adult ages to be so far off in the 1911 census?  (I believe the father’s 1901 age was accurate.)  Thank you for reading my post.  Lisa

Added:  or, is it more likely that there were two families with very similar details.  Thank you.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / 1920s - can father be determined?
« on: Monday 04 March 24 19:07 GMT (UK)  »
While helping a friend, “Bob”, with his tree, we found out that his grandfather was not his biological grandfather.  Nothing was ever mentioned to Bob, but his mother may not have known about her birth father. Thanks to the families having their DNA tested, creating online trees and including photos, I am certain that I found his previously unknown cousins, etc.

However, there were several brothers in the family.  I believe I can exclude a few of the brothers as being his grandfather but might there be a way to determine which brother “met up” with his grandmother?  The siblings were born in Ireland and most settled in America.  I’ve not yet been able to find out anything about one of the brothers so I can’t rule him out.  I also don’t know if all of the brothers were included in the trees.

I’ve started a tree for this family, to do my own research, but I’m just wondering, please, if it is more than likely impossible to determine who might be the grandfather. Thank you, Lisa

Armed Forces / James Mumford, Crimean veteran?
« on: Saturday 24 February 24 02:53 GMT (UK)  »
In my ancestor’s (Canadian) obit, it was stated that he was a Crimean veteran.  I am wondering how I might check the validity of this statement, please.

James Mumford, born 12 October 1826, Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex, England.  Occupation: Butcher
Parents: James Mumford and Martha Grange
In 1857, he married Susanna(h) Vaus and almost immediately sailed to North America

I have additional details about James, his parents (and other family members) and Susanna.  I am just curious if there is a way to search for his possible involvement in the war, please.  Thank you, Lisa

Canada / J. Harry Ibbotson, 1905 essay re Henty books (Ontario)
« on: Friday 23 February 24 00:45 GMT (UK)  »
Toronto: I am in search of an article that supposedly appeared in “The (Toronto?) Star” in 1905. According to a 1950 newspaper article, in 1905, J. Harry Ibbotson’s school essay about Henty books was included in a full page write up submitted by students at McCaul School, University Avenue.  I do not know the exact date of the article but supposedly the students’ write ups were in a Saturday newspaper.    Thank you, Lisa

Technical Help / Mini iPad: Deleting several History items at one time?
« on: Thursday 01 February 24 07:51 GMT (UK)  »
Mini iPad: I had a LOT of webpages open.  I was looking at each one, writing down “important” webpages (that I wanted to follow up with) and deleting those no longer needed.  Through operator error, I lost all of my pages.

Is there a way, please, to select several items in history at one time and delete them as a group?  Deleting one at a time is incredibly time consuming (and very frustrating).  Thank you, Lisa

[Added: my goal was to only keep three or four tabs(?) open - logging important sites on paper, then deleting them as well as unneeded sites.]
