Australia / NSW BDM / reCAPTCHA
« on: Sunday 18 December 22 01:10 GMT (UK)  »
The NSW BDM has recently made BDM look ups take much longer than necessary with the addition of the reCAPTCA impediment.  I am not sure if it me or the poor quality grainy foreign photos that takes me so long to find the exact event date.  Neil

Kent Lookup Requests / Archibald McCallum b Grenfell NSW 17 Oct 1910 - ??
« on: Friday 08 December 17 23:56 GMT (UK)  »
Archibald McCallum, son of Alexander McCallum and Mary Cameron McDonald, was working for his Uncle Walter McCallum at Wentworth (grazier d Jan 1941 grazier) New South Wales, when he enlisted at Sturt St, South, Melb, Vic, in 2/6 th Battalion on 20 Oct 1939, VX 3212.  He was promoted from Corporal to Sergeant on 15 May 1941, shortly before his capture on Crete.  The proper paperwork could not be completed at the time, so there was some argument for a while about the validity of the promotion.  This was  was finally approved with a statement from Captain A K Browne OC (VX72).  Archibald was demobbed in England and was living at c/- Mrs. C. Garrett, 33 Gwyder Rd, Beckenham, Kent on 23 Dec 1948.
My question is did he marry and whom ?
Date or year and place of death?

Goulburn Evening Post (NSW : 1940 - 1954), Wednesday 1 July 1942.
GOULBURN MAN HONOURED Sergeant Archibald McCallum, of 2/6th Battalion, has been mentioned in despatches in recognition of distinguished services in the Middle East, including Egypt, East Africa, the Western Desert, the Sudan, Greece, Crete, Syria and Tobruk, during the period February, 1941, to July, 1941.  Mrs. Donald R. Peden, (nee Margaret McDonald, an aunt) of "Ferrintosh." Chatsbury, has been informed of the King's appreciation of the services of her nephew, Sergeant McCallum, who is now a prisoner of War in Germany.

George and Emma Williams [nee Price]  :) and 4 children, Anne Maria, Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, and George jnr, arrived Sydney on 6 December 1878 with 468 other migrants on the Hereford.  Anne Maria was born in Penarth Glamorgan Wales on 24 December 1865, but I have not found details for the other children nor marriage details for George and Emma.  Emma died on 19 December 1907 at Chatswood NSW and was buried at Rookwood old Methodist cemetery.  I am reluctant to purchase a limited transcription at this time and am asking RCs if they can help with a look up of Emma's maiden name.
Cheers Neil -- Thank you Neil, also Ros, Debra, and Judith

Canada / Obituaries pre 1954 - Completed
« on: Wednesday 07 March 12 21:17 GMT (UK)  »
Due to an economic depression in Australia in the 1890s, my great Uncle migrated to Vancouver in 1904 and puchased the timber business of A P May.  He changed the name to J Fyfe Smith & Co, and its way of sourcing product.  He was the president of the Vancouver Cricket Club and led Rugby tours around the Pacific rim.  He and his wife and daughter travelled on business and their art collection from Pacific peoples is held by the Universty of BC.  Several photos have been found on vaious websites.

James Fyfe Smith died in Vancouver on 17th July 1953 per the BC Archives.
His brother-in-law James Barnet, an architect, came to Vancouver with his two daughters for similar reasons.  He died on 12th August 1932.

Are ther any sources of obituaries for Vancouver?   In Australia newspaper copyright does not apply pre 1955 and the National Library is digitising old newspapers.  A great resouce for genealogists with relatives in Australia.   http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/15297176

Australia / PRINGLE - Scot to Aust 1881-1884
« on: Monday 27 February 12 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
James Milne Pringle came to Aust. with his bros. Alexander Talyor Pringle, Andrew Hyslop Pringle and sisters Christina Hunter Pringle, and Jean Cossar Pringle.  According to the 1881 Census they were living in Edinburgh and newsclips show they were citizens of Bathurst around 1884-5.
I have been scrolling through the ship lists on Mary Ann Warner's site but have not found them yet.  Is this the only way to find when they emigrated?
My great grandfather William Smith, and his son James Fyfe Smith had a building business with James Pringle based at a quarry in Old South Head Road, Waverley from 1888-1897 approx.  James later had a business called J M and A Pringle.

Australia Lookups completed / Fredrica Collie SMITH COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 13 April 11 08:38 BST (UK)  »
Frederica Edwards was born in Brighton VIC in 1893.   DIED 14 May 1981 Asfield NSW.  She was the 3rd child of Alfred Edwards [C1864 Northampton Eng, died 2 Oct 1905 Balwyn VIC] who married Frederica Backman [1868-1959] in 1888 in Brighton.  Their eldest child William Charles Edwards [1889-3 Aug 1972] was a pianist who moved to Perth and ran Billy Edwards Music Co Ltd.  His sister Frederica joined him in the Merrymakers and Green Dandies where she performed as a soubrette in 1915-1917 to some acclaim.  In 1919 she was managing a blouse shop in Sydney.  On 24 Oct 1920 she married Fromelles veteran Robert Collie Smith in St Leonards registry office and had two boys and two girls.   In 1927 and 1928 she was back in Perth with intentions of staying.  In 1936-37 she and Robert were back in Manly according to electoral rolls.  Frederica placed the funeral and death notices for Robert Collie Smith in Hobart on 27 July 1941.  The last reference I have for her is on the death of her mother Fredrica on 1 Nov 1959 in the Alfred Hospital, Melb.  All of her 3 children were living at the time.
I would be pleased if anyone could offer assistance or suggestions about finding death details for Frederica Smith [nee Edwards].

New Zealand Completed Requests / Death of Irene Stewart SMITH -COMPLETED
« on: Friday 25 June 10 23:07 BST (UK)  »
I have been unable to find a death or burial notice for Irene Stewart SMITH born Newtown NSW in April 1889.  Her father died in 1893 and she probably went to live with her uncle George Crichton SMITH and aunt Isabella at Wahroonga NSW.  She married Christchurch lawyer Arthur Frank WRIGHT at the home of her aunt and uncle in Nov 1912.  They had 3 boys and 3 girls between 1914 & 1933.  Arthur was buried on 25 Feb 1961 at Sydenham Cemetery CHCH and I have a copy of his DC. Would the probate papers shed any light?
Agency CAHX, Series 2989, Accession CH171, box/item 259, Record CH 5259-1961.
