Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Parish in Athlone Roscommon
« on: Saturday 09 July 22 15:08 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm not confident of what the parish is here. The rest I have, Barony of Athlone, etc.
Having cross-referenced with maps, I think it might be a variant spelling of Killinvoy but I'd appreciate any thoughts if you think that's right or wrong.
Thanks

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Question about Priaulx Library lookup service
« on: Thursday 07 April 22 11:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am thinking about using the Priaulx Library lookup service for two marriages.
I've downloaded their form and it asks me to specify Civil Registration marriage or Church marriage register.

Does anyone know if one register is more likely to be successful than the other, and whether I'm likely to get more information from one than the other, e.g. parents' names, etc.?

Thanks.

Canada / Records between 1929 and 1931
« on: Tuesday 12 February 19 12:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have the passenger list records of a relative who emigrated to Canada in 1929 (then returned to the UK in 1931).
The destination listed was the Salvation Army Hostel in Toronto for domestic work and she then moved to work on a farm somewhere unknown.

I will be in Toronto later this year and wondered if there are any records (particularly those accessible only in person) that might tell me more about where she was or what she was doing.  I understand the 1931? census is not released yet.

Any hints or tips would be appreciated.  I know it is a narrow window of time to work with.
Thanks.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Place name help, please
« on: Wednesday 03 January 18 12:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,  I'm trying to work out the place name from this baptism record and would welcome any ideas.
It's the fifth column of the bottom row. I've included a fair amount of other text for reference.
My best guess is Barristead, Herefordshire (looking at the double R in Harriet at the top), but this doesn't seem to be a place.
Any ideas?

Travelling People / Olive Mary Stanley - relative of John Stanley/Ireland?
« on: Thursday 10 August 17 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've been trying to identify John Stanley/Ireland for some time.  It is somewhat complicated because he used both Stanley and Ireland as his surname in different census returns. There are a couple of other (old) threads, one is here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=309819.0

I can find nothing on him before 1879, which is the baptism of his Olive, his first child at St John's, Walworth. He married Mary Jane Quigley in 1880. His father is listed as Zachariah Ireland (deceased) but I haven't found anything related to him. I have John Stanley's children's baptisms and later census returns.

Some internet searching turned up chat threads which mention Olive Mary Stanley married to Daniel Johnson.  Daniel and Olive are at 8 Park Row, Newington in 1881, same address as John Stanley and family (RG11 P549 F32 P58). Previously I had not made any connection between these two families.

However - I can't find a marriage record for Daniel Johnson and Olive Mary Stanley so I cannot confirm this information from the internet search.  I also cannot confirm any relationship between John Stanley and Olive Mary Stanley/Johnson, though it seems likely, particularly given he named his eldest Olive.

If anyone has any information, particularly on how we know Daniel Johnson married Olive Mary Stanley I would be very grateful.
I know that the RTFHS has Stanley histories, but I'm not sure if they would be any help to me here.

Thanks

Warwickshire Completed Lookup Requests / COMPLETE Albert Edward Lenton born c.1898
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 20:04 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to locate a birth registration or census entry for Albert Edward Lenton.

He married Beatrice Mary Nicholls on 19th March 1927 in Tamworth.  They both said they were 29 yrs old (but I’m wondering if he was making his age up).
His address was Hill Farm House, Mere Green, father Albert Hatton Lenton, gardener domestic.
Her address Rowton Cottage, Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, father Charles Nicholls, green keeper.

I’ve had success with Beatrice, but can’t find anything beyond speculation for Albert.  Thought his father’s unusual middle name might help, but hasn’t so far.
Any bright ideas for places to search, etc.?

Thanks

Scotland / The Scotsman Archive
« on: Tuesday 28 October 08 14:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found a wealth of information on a newsworthy incident that a relative was caught up in.

Archive of The Scotsman newspaper 1817 to 1950.
http://edu.archive.scotsman.com/

This is a subscription service, but I would imagine that many libraries would have access.
I am happy to do lookups. Sorry, I no longer have access to the service.

The Common Room / Please help reading handwriting
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 10:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I'm trying to decipher something on the Charles Booth online archive.  What I'm looking at is here:

http://booth.lse.ac.uk/notebooks/b365/jpg/163.html

(I don't know if I'm allowed to copy the image).

There are just a couple of words that I can't read:

"Larissa St leading to Tisdall Place: very poor rough: windows bad, mess, all costers [something something] thieves: Larissa St rather worse than Tisdall Place"

Any ideas?
TIA
Jo
