Other Countries / Shanghai Municipal Council Pension Records
« on: Saturday 15 August 20 12:26 BST (UK)  »
In 2011 I went to the National Archives to research my partner's great uncle James Edward Morgan, who was a Chief Inspector in the Public Works Department of the Shanghai Municipal Council.  He was a Japanese Prisoner of War from February 1943 to August 1945.

I found a sheet with James's name on it but have 3 sheets altogether, which relate to "Advances in respect of PENSIONS to former employees of Shanghai Municipal Council for the period 1st April to 30th June 1946.  Subject to an upper limit of £40 per month."

There are other names on these sheets and I am asking whether it would be OK and legal to detail them here in case other researchers are looking for records?  Obviously, I cannot help you with further records but I could point you in the right direction as I have the File Numbers for these records.

World War Two / King’s Own Royal Rifles - Ranks

Hello,

Can anybody tell me what an “A/Capt” and “T/Capt might mean please?  I know “Capt” stands for Captain, but what does the A and T stand for and what were their responsibilities?

Hi everybody,

I know there is a new Family Tree Maker released every year but some are not as good as others.  As I am now working, I stopped subscribing to Ancestry but am worried that my extensive trees will be deleted.  So which is the best Family Tree Maker for this purpose or is it just as easy to create a spreadsheet?

This is a photograph of the Tucker Shop in Culvert Road, Battersea, showing Julia Tucker, born in 1900, standing in the doorway.  Her father Walter John bought it for his wife Mary Jane Waters.  Could anyone actually date this photograph?

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Immigration to Halifax, Canada
« on: Saturday 22 February 14 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have posted this under Canada but am also posting it here:

My paternal uncle GEORGE BENTLEY appears to have emigrated to Canada on 31st March 1957 as per a Passenger List where he is shown aboard the SS "Neptunia" - a Greek line.  The last column of the Passenger List states "Country of future intended permanent residence" and against George's name is Canada.  The port of entry into Canada is stated to be Halifax.  Are there any Halifax Immigration records I can check?

His details are:

George Bentley
Born in Glossop, Derbyshire, UK on 1st November 1921
Marital status in Passenger List:  Single
Profession stated in Passenger List:  Photographer
Last UK address:  69 Gunterstone Road, West Kensington, London W14
Sailed to Canada on 31st March 1957
Aboard the SS "Neptunia" - a Greek Line.

Lancashire / Manchester Inquests 1958 - Thomas Osborne found dead 9th April 1958
« on: Friday 12 April 13 12:44 BST (UK)  »
I previously posted in the Common Room but I put 1858 instead of 1958.

The post is:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,596513.msg4465880.html#msg4465880

The Coroner looks like G J Lycroft of Manchester and the inquest was read on 11th April 1958.  Thomas was found dead on 9th April 1958 having gassed himself.  His address was 17 Bartlett Street, Openslaw.

Is there anywhere I can look up his inquest - I do not subscribe to any newspaper archives?

The Common Room / Celtic Song "Grace"
« on: Wednesday 10 April 13 22:41 BST (UK)  »
I've just come back from a lovely week in Ireland and heard the above song "Grace" on the radio there.  I've found the lyrics which are:

"Grace

Unknown

As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Jaill
I think about these past few weeks, oh will they say we've failed?
From our school days they have told us we must yearn for liberty
Yet all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me

Oh Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye

Now I know it's hard for you my love to ever understand
The love I shared for these brave men, the love for my dear land
But when glory called me to his side down in the GPO
I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go

Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye

Now as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking too
On this May morn as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you
And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know
I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose.

Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
 For we must say goodbye"

Someone had posted below the lyrics that the words were based on the 1916 GPO uprising in Dublin and that Grace never remarried again.  Does anybody know where I can find out about the groom - its such a sad story?

I've found the following website about the GPO uprising
