Midlothian / Thomas SOMERVILLE/Margaret GILCHRIST and a son John
« on: Saturday 18 February 17 14:42 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone familiar with this family? Looking to connect with anyone who might be able to confirm my suspicions about John parentage. John was a collier. John was identified as of "Miller Hill" in 1826 when son Richard was born and of "Adamsrow" in 1829 when son John was born.

A search of O.P.R. Marriages birth records from 1770 - 1790 in Midlothian, reveal three births for a John Somerville. A similar search for "John Sommerville" had no returns. The following record for John Somerville, born June 11, 1773, son of THOMAS SOMERVILLE/MARGARET GILCHRIST (FR573) of Newton, Midlothian, GROS: 696/00 0020 0184 is the most likely candidate.

Thomas was schoolmaster in Newton. He was born Nov 23 1743 at Inveresk, Midlothian and married Dec 7 1770 to Margaret Gilchrist (born Dec 28 1749 at Newton, Midlothian) Margaret was the daughter of Rev. David Gilchrist (1721-1770) and Elizabeth Moffet (1729-1751) whose father was Rev. Thomas Moffet.

Thanks for your help.

Inverness / Allan Macdonald & Mary MacLean North Uist
« on: Friday 18 September 15 13:05 BST (UK)  »
Trying to learn more on the ancestry of Allan MacDonald (probably born before 1780) on North Uist - his father may have been John MacDonald. Allan married Mary MacLean. Their eldest known child was Norman Macdonald born abt 1799. Other children were Mary (1800), Catherine ( ?), James Edward ( ? ), Susan (? ), John W. (1808).

The family emigrated to Nova Scotia around 1822 and settled in a rural area known as Stewartdale, Inverness county. Allan died in 1843 and Mary in 1855.

Allan had a relative, perhaps a brother, Donald who left Uist and settled at Red Head, Baddeck, Nova Scotia. He was grandfather to Rev. J. D. Nelson MacDonald.

I would be very interested to learn more origins of this North Uist family.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Ancestors of Minnie Kilvington of Ilkley
« on: Saturday 15 September 12 16:40 BST (UK)  »
My wife's grandmother is Minnie Kilvington. She was born March 23, 1899 in Ilkley, Wharfdale, Yorkshire to Tom Kilvington and Grace ?  Minnie was a "home child". She came to Canada in 1906 from the Middlemore Home in Birmingham, England. We are trying to find out about her ancestors and what became of her parents? Did she have any siblings? Are there relatives still in Ilkley? Any and all help appreciated.
