Armed Forces / Regretful notification of the passing of MaxD
« on: Sunday 08 August 21 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.
I know that my grandfather spent many an hour on this site and thoroughly enjoyed communicating with all of you that share his interest in the military! He would routinely update me with who he had helped or the new bits he had learnt from you all!

With deep sadness,
Zoe

Does anyone know the whereabouts of 173 Port Maintenance Squadron RE in 1958 to 1961?  This was an Army Emergency Reserve (AER) unit, not regular or TA.  In 1950 it was in Liverpool, in 1956 it was at the military port at Marchwood for Suez (seen the article that Google brings up) but later years elude me.  (The RE Museum is of course currently closed to enquiries.)

Technical Help / No notifications - help please
« on: Saturday 01 June 19 10:16 BST (UK)  »
I think I may have (for the second time!) inadvertently shut of all notifications although my profile doesn't say so.  I know I can keep up with the New Replies button but I do like notifications, makes me feel wanted!

Would the clever folk at the helm delve around and see what I may have done please.

Technical Help / Is it my computer or the site I am looking at??
« on: Thursday 02 August 18 14:28 BST (UK)  »
What happens:
I find a (usually) multi page military record on FindMyPast.  I read page 1, "turn" the page only to get the little circle arrows whizzing round against a black page that sometimes will not produce the page at all. The various page identifiers are at top and bottom of the screen, just no detailed page.   I try the same record on Ancestry, no problem, pages come up obediently.  Where the record only exists on FindMyPast, I go back to it and next time all is well (sometimes).

Is it my computer or is it FindMyPast and if the latter, is it worth complaining?

London and Middlesex / Johnson and Johnson marriage Lambeth?
« on: Tuesday 15 May 18 10:35 BST (UK)  »
John Johnson whip maker and Mary Johnson (maiden name) were the parents of, among others, Ellen Johnson born 1845 for whom we have the birth certificate.

With the great help of folk on an earlier thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=791327.0 we have their first census appearance 1841 in Union Street Lambeth with children William Johnson 10 Henry Johnson  10 John Johnson 8 Richard Johnson 1.  Subsequent 1851 and 1861 appearances are in Lambeth.
He is born 1807 ish Lancashire, she (who may be Mary M) is 1804 ish various places given but are all essentially Lambeth.

Maiden Stone has floated the thought that Ann Henrietta (1851 census but not 1841) who is the only child born away from Lambeth may be from a different relationship?

Quest now is to find the John Johnson/Mary (M) Johnson marriage 1830ish??

Armed Forces Resources / Guards regiments service records transfer to Glasgow
« on: Saturday 05 May 18 17:01 BST (UK)  »
The Grenadier Guards archivist has advised that the service records heretofore held by the Guards regiments, with the exception of the Scots Guards, have been transferred to APC Glasgow and are currently being catalogued etc.  Gloom.
