The Common Room / Alfred Hudson puzzle
« on: Tuesday 02 January 24 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking to find more about Alfred Hudson, born around 1836 in (apparently) Shipley, Yorkshire.

I only know about his later life and can find very little prior to 1891.

He 'married' Elizabeth Ann Frecknall (also known as Quail or Wilson). She had married to William Alexander Quaill in 1882 but he seems to have disappeared soon after their marriage. Elizabeth is first recorded with the surname Hudson in 1886 prison records, so this is probably around when she got with Alfred. Wilson was her mother's maiden name and I suspect a pseudonym.

I have not been able to find any official marriage between Elizabeth and Alfred, and most likely one doesn't exist.

What I do know about Alfred:

1891 census – Lodging House, Rookery, Addingham, Yorkshire, England  (RG 12/3504, f 31, p 12)
Alfred Hudson, Lodger, M, 45, Mason, Yorkshire Shipley, blind of 1 eye
Elizabeth Hudson, Lodger, M, 32, Nottinghamshire Norwell

1901 census – Lodging House, Park Top, Stanningley, Yorkshire, England (RG 13/4188, f 142, p 25)
Alfred Hudson, Head, M, 64, Mason, Shiplow Yks
Elizabeth Hudson, Wife M, 47, Pedlar Hawk., Norwell Notts
+lodgers

Death registration:
9 Feb 1907, Union Workhouse, Clayton U.D.: Alfred Hudson, 71 yrs, hawker of Pudsey U.D. Cause of death Chronic bronchitis, certified by W. Cunliffe, L.R.C.S. Registered 22 Feb 1907 by J. Summerfield (master), Union Workhouse, Clayton.

His wife Elizabeth also died at Clayton Workhouse, in December 1907.

The only possible prior record is this 1871 census record:

1871 census – 114 Walmgate, York St Margaret, Yorkshire (RG 10/4752, f 16, p 25)
Alfred Hudson, Head, Mar, 30, Moulder, Yorkshire Shipley
Catherine Hudson, Wife, Mar, 30, Moulders Wife, Ireland Galway

Not sure who Catherine might be, no marriage I could identify. I have not found any other trace of her, nor been able to find Alfred on any other census.

Can anyone find anything on Alfred prior to 1891?

Thank you!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Surname in will (1700)
« on: Saturday 11 November 23 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
Struggling to read the surname of the son-in-law John named in this will...thought of a couple possibilities but interested to know what you think it might be.

The will is from Nottinghamshire, written in 1700.

Thank you!

Nottinghamshire / Location of Basford Register Office in 1919?
« on: Saturday 19 August 23 18:23 BST (UK)  »
My great grandparents married at Basford Register Office in 1919. However I understand that after 1899 the parish of Basford had been transferred to Nottingham registration district.

I also just discovered another marriage that took place at Basford parish church near this time was registered under Nottingham district, rather than Basford. Very confusing...

I am guessing therefore that Basford Register Office was not actually located in Basford itself by 1919. Does anyone know where Basford RO was located in 1919? I've not been able to find the actual address.

The Common Room / Looking for will (in PCC per Death Duty Register)
« on: Monday 17 July 23 15:24 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a copy of the will of Mary Ann Butcher who died in Lambeth, Surrey in 1846.

There is an entry in the Death Duty Register index in 1847, which says the court was "PC" which I presume is the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. However I have been unable to find the will in the PCC registers either on Ancestry or TNA.

Wondered if it might be an administration, but those are usually indexed as such.

If no luck I'll plan to check the Death Duty Register itself, to see if that clarifies things, but it will be some time before I have chance to do so.

Any ideas on where to find this will?

Thanks

Alexander

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / "Worried by an ass"?
« on: Saturday 24 December 22 19:32 GMT (UK)  »
This is a burial record for a relative, 1823 in Woodborough, Notts.

In the margin it looks like it says "worried by an Ass". What could this mean??

The Common Room / Harry Hall football career
« on: Saturday 29 October 22 16:06 BST (UK)  »
I have known for many years that my great uncle Harry Hall had been a professional footballer, however did not know anything more.

Finally made a breakthrough with the 1921 census, which shows his occupation as Footballer (Pro), Lincoln City F.C. (attached below).

On Wikipedia there are a couple of articles which appear a little confused:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Hall_(footballer,_born_1900)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Hall_(footballer,_born_1893)

I think that my Harry was the first one, although the birth year and a few details are incorrect. However the second one also shows as played for Lincoln City, which I think may be an error.

My Harry was born in 1897 in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, and died 23 Jun 1924 in Beeston, Nottinghamshire. I have his death certificate, and occupation is shown as "engineers press operator", so apparently not still earning his living from football by that point.

Harry had married Maggie Everitt in 1922 in Nottingham, and they had one son, Frank born in 1923 who sadly died aged 4. When Frank was born in July 1923, Harry was recorded as a footballer but no other detail. I have not been able to trace what happened to Maggie after Harry's death.

I am curious to learn out more about Harry's football career, however it has been quite confusing, as there were a few footballers of the same name in the same period. I know for certain that he is not the Harry Hall who played for Sheffield United. From what I can tell it looks like Harry played for Lincoln City then Darlington, but I am not sure if he played professionally before this.

Thanks,

Alexander

Nottinghamshire / Sanders of Watnall/Greasley
« on: Sunday 14 February 21 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
Got a family of Sander/Sanders/Saunders in Watnall, Greasley parish, but struggling to find the marriage and baptisms of their children.

William Sanders
b. c.1729
d. 1805 in Greasley

wife Ann
b. c.1727
d. 1763 in Greasley

Children (as noted in the will of William, and his son William’s will)
 - Mary (married Robert Smith), b. c.1751, d. 1812 Greasley
 - Alice (married John Clarke), b. c.1751, d. 1821 Greasley
 - William Sanders, farmer of Watnall, b. c.1754, d. 1814 Greasley
 - Jemima (married Joseph Bembridge), b. c.1761, d. 1811 Greasley
 - John Sanders, baker of Bobbers Mill, Nottingham
 - Ann (married Thomas Lee of Arnold)

I can’t find a marriage for William and Ann in the late 1740s/early 1750s, looked for variants Sander, Saunders, etc. Also struggling to find baptisms for the children. There are two possible baptisms I could find for John (1757) and Hannah (1759) Saunders in Greasley, both children of William and Ann, but unsure if they are the right ones, as I can’t find any other siblings.

William and Ann have a headstone in Greasley churchyard which confirms their death dates.

Any ideas for finding their marriage or the missing baptisms? I have looked in Derbyshire and surrounding counties as well but no luck.

Thanks
Alexander

The Stay Safe Board / Leslie Corona Newman
« on: Sunday 22 March 20 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
What are the chances that now of all times I discover a distant relative, Leslie Corona Newman...

Born in 1902, probably named in honour of the coronation. A surprising number of children named Corona, Coronation, or a variant, born around that time.
