South Africa / Blanche Seymour Dallas -South Africa
« on: Sunday 16 August 20 06:09 BST (UK)  »
Blanche Seymour Dallas and her birth ? Still working away on this question!!!

An actual evidence of date and place of birth would be ideal.

1885: Born 27 APR 1885 South Africa. This date is published on Roots Web. No further details found. Probably Cape Province. Her Father was an Actor then worked as a Manager in Kimberley Diamond Mines.

1937: Blanche died aged 52. Born 1885 not 1890 as sometimes published. Mother (maiden name Cole) got a Divorce then re-married. Only Blanche the youngest child adopted by Bernard Vidal Shaw her mother's new Husband. Free BMD shows she died age 52 in 1937 in England. i.e. Born 1885.  Probably Cape Province. Again possibly Kimberley.

Percival Taylor Hyatt died 7 April 1957, Saanich, British Columbia. He was married at the time of his death. Born Shepton Mallett, Somerset 28 September 1887. Came to Canada abt. 1913. Married Joyce Bowes (otherwise Joyce Lavinia Gifford Hyatt). Canada? Daughter of William Bowes and Bessie Castle.

Joyce born Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire, England. Bowes heritage - County Durham, Castle - Devon.

Joyce was firstly married to Joseph Peter King, 27 July 1914 at Thunder Bay , Ontario. Killed during WW1 in Canadian Forces or divorced? or just died?

Joyce died 10 January 1976, Vancouver.

I am trying to find the Hyatt/Bowes/(Mrs King) second marriage to Hyatt. Any children from either marriage?

Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 Register
« on: Friday 27 December 19 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
"In 1939, the National Registration Act ordered a register of everybody living in the UK – for the purpose of issuing identity cards, ration books and call-up papers". But surely not 14, 15 and 16 year olds. But they had to eat too? I cannot remember how they were handled. On my own family the redactor redacted my mother who was of age and not my uncle who was under age. Did not really matter as I knew my mother's full information. Scotland is getting closer to opening up their records too. As for Northern Ireland did they have registration?

Armed Forces Resources / Able SeaCat Simon, RN
« on: Thursday 28 November 19 02:33 GMT (UK)  »
70 years ago, on 28 November 1949 Simon died at the Hackbridge Boarding and Quarantine Kennels in Surrey aged about 2. Nothing is known about his previous life in the Hong Kong Docks but his life was changed forever when he was found wandering on the docks and smuggled aboard HMS Amethyst.
His job in the Navy was to kill mice and rats on board the ship and keeping up the morale of the ship's human crew. Wounded by opposing shellfire on the Yangtse River he survived. Some of his human crewmates did not. Returning to England he was a celebrity. Sadly his injuries overcame him and despite of excellent care at Hackbridge he died. He won the Dickin Medal, and the award for the Amethyst Incident. Simon was buried the PDSA pet cemetery in Ilford, Essex, Many of his human shipmates attended his burial. He is the first and only cat to awarded the Dickin medal.

Quaker Family History / Quaker Marriage in Canton, China or in Hong Kong
« on: Sunday 24 November 19 05:44 GMT (UK)  »
Helen Tow was an American Quaker Missionary in Canton, China. She married George Stacey Kennedy-Skipton a Hong Kong based British Civil Servant. (Burkes Irish (minor) Nobility) on 23 August 1924. I have agonized as to where ….  Canton or Hong Kong?

I am now leaning towards Canton as she was based there, she had fellow missionaries there. He being male travelled alone better. Her Quaker leader was Mr Cadbury ( American) who published in his diaries that she was getting married but did not comment on where. Are there any thoughts (sources) as to where?
