hello

I am trying to locate a ggg grandfather William Hill, whose wife was Helen Hill and daughter Helen Hutton Hill married a Great Great Grandfather  John Mc Gough in Glasgow in 1875.

WILLIAM HILL    m   HELEN MCFADYEH/N
Their daughter HELEN/ELLEN HUTTON HILL born 1848 - d. 17 May 1920

In an 1878 application in Glasgow daughter Helen  Mc Gough [ nee Hill]  said her father had died in New Zealand ten years ago.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to locate William Hill in NZ with this scant information?

Many thanks
Julie [Tasmania]

Lanarkshire / ?Death of Philip Mortimer 1841-1851? [ex Roscommon to Glasgow 1833]
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 12:51 BST (UK)  »
hi
I am gaining ground on my Mortimer family arrived into Glasgow from Roscommon in 1833.
They are in 1841 census, and most in 1851 census then living with McGeoughs, or rather McGeough's with them.

I have death of mother Bridget Mortimer in 1855 [nee Cairns. M.N. Sheridan] , death of daughter Ann [McGeough] in 1856, and various records of Ann's brothers John and Philip Mortimer.

I am missing the death of father Philip Mortimer who was in the 1841 census, but not in 1851 census  - so I think he had died by 1851.

They are Catholic and  buried in Dabelth.

I have tried various soundex/ fuzzy, etc variants in Scotlands People for Philip Mortimer.
But not found his death yet.

In 1841 census he is aged 55 - so born in  c.1786.
and wife Bridget is 40, so born in c.1800 [though her death cert, in 1855 states she is aged 68 so born in 1797...].

Two infants named Philip Mortimer died in 1868.

thanks for any help with this
Julie

Lanarkshire / David Gough, printer 1901-1955+ at Glasgow Catholic newspaper 1901-1955
« on: Thursday 16 September 10 15:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am seeking   employment/working life information about great grandfather David Gough from Glasgow.

In 1901 aged 15 in Scottish Census he was a "Printers Apprentice" living on Sandyfaulds st

On 1905 marriage cert. he is a "Printer's Manager" and married Esther Cope, a "Printers assistant" living on South York Street

In 1955 he was aged 70 and 'running a Glasgow Catholic newspaper - according to family stories in Australia.

Was he working in the same place for 55 years?

Was it the Scottish Catholic Observer newspaper?
www.scottishcatholicobserver.org.uk/

But a memory of a family visit from Australia then suggests it was not a very big printery. So was this the printworks of another smaller local Catholic newspaper, or one that printed other material also as well as some Catholic pamphlets etc?

I have emailed the Scottish Catholic Observer  last week, asking whether David Gough had been employed there, but no news as yet.

Does anyone have any ideas, direction, or information ?

thanks
Julie

Hello,

I have had some luck and help with the Shropshire Archives, who have posted me [for a fee, but worthwhile] the 12pp trial and conviction to 10 years transportation, for housebreaking, to Van Diemen's Land of my gggg grandfather Joseph Kendall in 1841. He was a labourer, from the Parish of Hales Owen.

Anyhow,  I will be in England [from Tasmania - Van Diemen's Land!] in Sept and early Oct 2010 and would very much like to meet any Kendalls and/or Kendall descendants, or those with local knowledge, in the area between Hales Owen, Romsley and Hunnington.

For example, it would be great to meet people  who might be related from the siblings Joseph likely left behind. Also I am hoping that there might be some buildings still standing that are mentioned in the records that I could visit.

Joseph's father,  William Kendall whose house was from  the township of Romsley.
Joseph, in Tasmania, said his native place was "Houston, Shrophire"
but he was apprehended in the Bulls Head public house in Hunnington and it seems he lived at the time at Back Lane, Hunnington.

I have his Tasmanian convict indent record if you are related and interested, let me know.

Joseph Kendall
Convicted 18 Oct 1841 Salop Shrewsbury
Travelled from Portsmouth on ship MOFFATT (3). Arrived 28 Nov 1842 # 39579
Joseph Kindle married Sarah Ann Cox  6/5/1863 (born 1843 aged 20) when he was aged 38, born 1824/5.
Died: 31/1/1877 Ulverstone, Tasmania, Aged 52

It would be great to map these locations, understand more about what happened and see the places where an ancestor came from.

Hello

I am hoping to find out more about my ancestors CHARLES MC KENZIE and HANNAH nee MC INTOSH, who were tried in 1815 at Nottingham assizes and transported to NSW for coining.

What I have is below, and not very detailed.

I am hoping to find where they were from originally exactly and more about their circumstances and Nottingham and the assizes at that time.

Can anyone advise on how I could seek any trial records and also if there are any newspapers that might mention them from 1815 - and what these are called, and if any are online, or would I need to come to Nottingham to view them? etc.

I am in Cork until end Sept, but will be in England early Oct to search in person too, so any early advice/help would be fantastic.

thanks
Julie

CHARLES MC KENZIE:
From: UNKNOWN town, Co  Fermanagh - he is said to have been born c1782, though I think he may have been older, by 1815 he was possibly married, regardless had 3 children by then.

If anyone has any ideas for [b.c.1782 Fermanagh ‐ d.1822 Sydney (aged c.30)]
A labourer. Charged in Nottingham in 1815 with his wife Hannah/Annie McKenzie [nee McIntosh] with “Coining” – Death sentence commuted to life transportation.

He arrived 1816 into NSW on Atlas 3. Hannah and 3 children arrived a year later.
Charles died c1822 from injury - burns.

Hannah and Charle's son Hugh was said to be born in 1815 in Edinburgh. Hugh died 1867 in Morwatha NSW. [Can't find his birth online on Scotland's people...] The family perhaps arrived from Edinburgh to Nottingham just before conviction – how did they set up a coining racket so quickly ?!

When did Charles leave Ireland? etc. Was Hannah nee McIntosh also Irish?

Hannah remarried to another Irish man, George Gray, transported from Cork on the BRITANNIA,  they had 3 children.

Hannah is buried in the Roman Catholic section of Wangaratta cemetery, Victoria, Australia.

Hello

This is an extreme longshot - but one of my gggg grandfathers was Charles McKenzie, transported to Australia in 1816. He gave his native place as : Fermanagh.

I am currently in Ireland [Aug-Sept 2010] trying to figure out as close as possible, where ancestors came from, and visit those places. It would also be fantastic to meet/say hello to any distant relatives who stayed in Ireland.

Anyhow, what I have is below.
Many thanks for any advice,
Julie

Hello

I am hoping to visit where my ancestors came from. I am currently in Ireland from Australia.

In 1833  PHILIP MORTIMER, wife BRIDGET [nee Cairns/Kearns?] and their 3 CHILDREN – all Irish born, likely all from ROSCOMMON or nearby [from Bridget’s death certificate], emigrated to Glasgow.

Daughter BRIDGET CAIRNS  born Roscommon [b.c. 1796    -  d. Glasgow 1855]  m. Philip MORTIMER  when and where? Both born Ireland.. Where Philip born?

Bridget’s death cert.:  Statutory Deaths 644/05 0156, 1855
#156  Bridget MORTIMER

If deceased was married to whom: Philip Mortimer, a Nailor, Deceased. Bridget MORTIMER died:  1855, Feb 10th, Address: 81 Bridgegate st, Glasgow. Cause of death, How long disease continued: Consumption, 4 years. Burial place: Dalbeth, Glasgow. Signature of informant: John Mortimer: son, 1855 Feb 12th at Glasgow, John Strous? Registrar.

Ann McGough's [nee Mortimer] daughter was Helen/Ellen Hutton Hill [1848-1920] – married in Glasgow in 1875 to John  McGough b.1846 [whose father Francis was from Carrickmacross, Monaghan, b1818, left to Glasgow in 1841]

Thanks for any advice on how to find the original locations for where any of the above lived in Ireland, and also it would be fantastic to meet any descendants of those who stayed in Ireland.
