Galway / Fergus Monaghan & Ellen Hynes
« on: Saturday 01 August 09 00:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've been trying to research my mothers fathers side of the family (Monaghan) from County Galway for a while now unfortunately I've been stumped at almost every turn I've taken.

My grandfather was :-

Thomas Patrick Monaghan
Born: 8th Sept 1921, Shantalla, County Galway
Died: 14th Aug 1996, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland

The information I have from a few documents passed on before my grandfather died on his parents is as follows:

Father
Fergus Monaghan
Born: abt 1894, County Galway
Died: 22nd Jan 1964, Manchester, Lancashire, England

Mother
Ellen Hynes

Children
Thomas Patrick Monaghan
Born: 8th Sept 1921, Shantalla, County Galway
Died: 14th Aug 1996, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland

Patrick Monaghan
Born: 11th May 1923, County Galway
Died: 11th June 1981, Manchester, Lancashire, England

* There may have been other brothers and sisters that I do not know of.

Fergus Monaghan was with the Royal Horse Artillary during WW1. I have a medal card from the national archives at Kew with his Regt No. 31593 on it. He then lived in Shantalla when my grandfather was born in 1921.

Does anyone have any hints or tips on researching or does anyone know the names above?

Thanking you for taking the time to read my message. Hopefully some small piece of information is forthcoming.

Armed Forces / Service Uniforms ID?
« on: Friday 31 July 09 19:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to identify the uniforms of my great-grandfather Fergus Monaghan (kneeling front right) and his brothers in the enclosed photograph.

Fergus Monaghan served during WW1 with the Royal Horse & Field Artillary but I'm positive the uniform or cap badge isn't of the RH&FA.

He was born in 1894 in County Galway, Ireland and returned to Ireland after the WW1 so could the uniforms be of the Irish Army after the War perhaps?

At a loss to come up with any answers. Any help very much appreciated!

The photo is of my great grandfather Fergus Monaghan (kneeling front right) from County Galway, Ireland.

He was born around 1894 in Galway and died 1964 in Manchester. He served in WW1 with the Royal Horse Artillary but not sure which uniform he's wearing in this much later photo?

I'd love any info on possible date of photo and restoration.

Thank you in advance for your time and patience.

Stirlingshire / Infant Deaths in Falkirk early 1900s
« on: Friday 31 July 09 14:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)

My grandather James Shanks had a brother and sister who died in their early months in 18 Kerse Lane, Falkirk.

I may sound silly in asking so please forgive me but would the children have been interred in lairs as the adults would have been or was there a different place for children?

The info I have on the brother and sister:

George Shanks
Born: 4 May 1904, 18 Kerse Lane, Falkirk
Died: 23 Nov 1904, 18 Kerse Lane, Falkirk

Georgina Shanks
Born: 18 Oct 1905, 18 Kerse Lane, Falkirk
Died: 18 OCt 1905, 18 Kerse Lane, Falkirk

Parents:
George Shanks
Agnes Shanks (m.s. Waugh)

Does anyone have any info in which particular graveyard in Falkirk they may be interred in? I've tried unsuccessfully to find where they are interred. It's possible that, lke their mother and father interred in Denny Cemetery, there are no headstones or markers.

Thanks in advance.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Alexander Shanks - Railway Death 1890
« on: Friday 31 July 09 02:07 BST (UK)  »
Alexander Shanks
Birth: 1829 in Carriden, West Lothian, Scotland
Death: 19 Sept 1890 Near Broomhouse, West Lothian, Scotland
Married to Margaret Williamson

I'm looking for any information on the death of my GG-Grandfather Alexander Shanks who was a railway surfaceman in 1890. In the register of deaths book for Kirkliston is says he was run over by a train at 9:40am on 19th Sept 1890 whilst working on the railway near Broomhouse.

The procurator fiscals paperwork I have says cause of death was "injuries sustained by having been run over by a railway train on the North British Railway at Priestinch Bridge on 19th September 1890."

I believe he's buried in Kirkliston Cemetery. Does anyone have a photograph of the headstone?

Would this have probably been reported in the Edinburgh newspapers at the time? Any idea where to look to see if there was any reports on the accident?

Thanks for any input!

Stirlingshire / George Shanks - Denny Cemetery
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 20:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello!  :)

I am researching the family tree and recently found out that my great grandfather George Shanks and great grandmother Agnes Shanks (m.s Waugh) were buried in Denny Cemetery.

I had no idea both were buried there since George was from Uphall, West Lothian and Agnes from Falkirk. George Shanks died in Herbertshire Street, Denny in 1912 and Agnes remarried George Moffat. So her name was Agnes Moffat at the time of death in Caronglen Cottage, Dunipace in 1927.

I now know, from contacting Falkirk Council, the lairs are Secton B 218 and 219 in Denny Cemetery and as I'm from Bonnybridge I spent a few hours yesterday walking round in circles trying to locate the lairs! I found Section B 210 then it went to B 300.  ???

George Shanks
Born: 24 May 1869 Uphall, West Lothian
Died: 29 Aug 1912 50 Herbertshire Street, Denny
Interred: Denny Cemetery - Section B, Lair 219

Agnes Shanks (m.s Waugh) later Agnes Moffat
Born: 10 Sept 1872, East Bridge Street, Falkirk
Died: 16 Apr 1927, Caronglen Cottage, Dunipace
Interred: Denny Cemetery - Section B, Lair 218

Agnes remarried a George Moffat after the death of George Shanks

George SHanks moved from West Lothian to Falkirk and was a boarder at Robert's Wynd in Falkirk as a Blacksmith Journeyman in 1891.
In 1901 he is a Blacksmith residing in 34 High Station Road, Falkirk

I'm wondering if anyone could give any info on the cemetery - approx. where the lairs are? I'm not too sure if there are headstones or any kind of marker or not?

I have census, marriage details but any other info on both would be most welcome too!

Thanks in advance, hope I'm not being too taxing in my first posting on this great forum!
