Kincardineshire / Johnshaven Cemetery - grave location.
« on: Sunday 18 August 13 09:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi Jean

I wonder if you could help me with my grandfathers and grandmothers grave
I have found that they were buried in the Old part of Johnshaven Cemetery
Compartment E Section 3 numbers 553 554 and 555.
I would like to know if there are any gravestones.
I live in England but am hoping to come up there next year.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Montrosekid
Hi Cousin Dot,
I visited Johnshaven last week and spent a bit of time in the old graveyard looking for the grave of our grandparents Walter and Isabella FREEMAN.  A thorough and detailed search of the graveyard including the taking of many photos did not find my grandparents gravestone. On a trip to to Stonehaven Registrar I was able to view a schematic outline of the  graveyard but was not permitted to have a photocopy of the location of the lairs 553, 554 and 555.  The photos below show that the area where they are located is almost totally devoid of stones.
Does anyone know if there is any older Aberdeen Council Department likely to have a more detailed map survey of this graveyard which would show the location of my grandparents lairs in relation to the two Ritchie gravestone shown below.

Cheers,
Sy

Aberdeenshire / Cause of Death
« on: Friday 02 August 13 13:22 BST (UK)  »
I have a death certificate which lists the Cause of Death as:
Cerebrovascular Accident.
I understood the person, who was 72 years of age, had died of a heart attack while in Arduthie Hospital Stonehaven in 1992.
I don't understand the reference to 'Accident' in the COD.
Can anyone clarify what this means.

Aberdeenshire / Isabella aka CADGER-OGSTON-SCOTT
« on: Friday 29 March 13 18:25 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather’s marriage and death certificates gave me the SCOTT & OGSTON names.
Isabella SCOTTs death cert lead me to look for CADGER.
Who was his mother?
See snips below.

Aberdeenshire / CADGER baptism in Lonmay Parish
« on: Friday 29 March 13 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
I'm straying from the Kincardineshire forum in Aberdeenshire with puzzle.
The OPR snip records two baptisms for Isabella CADGER
Is this a recording mix up by the Lonmay Session Clerk who was writing up the Ministers note book into the main ledger or do we have two separate baptism for the same day?
Opinions please.
Cheers,
Sy

Ok for a start this is only 149 dpi and its very badly compressed.
Any chance of another scan..there are tutorials at the top of these boards if you need help
Irene
Thanks Irene and Alan.
I don't want you to waste your time on this one, I thought I had posted a 600 and a 300 dpi scan I must be doing something wrong.  I'll look at the tutorials.
Cheers, Sy
I hope I learned something about scanning from the tutorials.
Here is my third attempt to upload a 600 dpi scan.  Would someone please enhance the detail

Kincardineshire / ALEXANDER FREEMAN's FAMILY - GOURDON
« on: Thursday 10 January 13 16:08 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching the FREEMANs of GOURDON & JOHNSHAVEN
Earlier I posted this question:
Alexander FREEMAN b. 1691 baptised BERVIE 30:8:1691.
Bervie OPR lists him as FISHER in GOURDON.
Between 1713 and 1728 he fathered six children, five boys and one daughter.
The Clerk who registered the Bervie all the baptisms in this period never once records the name of the mother of any family.
Searching for Alexander's marriage in Scotlandspeople from Kinneff to St Cyrus found only one possibility:
Alexander m. Elspet CORMAK in Kinneff & Caterline in 1725.
The problem with this marriage is the date.  If correct it is far too late to legitimise for all but the last child born 1728. The OPR lists  them all as 'lawful'.
This week I thought I had a complete break-through here, see clip from the Bervie OPR of May 1730 recording the  birth of a seventh child and the tragic circumstances of Alexander's death.

The OPR clip goes on to list the names of the other eight Gourdon fisherman who were lost along with Alexander:
Simon Gibson : David Fatt : Alexander Gowan : William Gowan – David Jeammmie :
Alexander Jeammie : Robert Welsh : William Gowan
The GREAT STORM of 1703 is well documented but I have found nothing on the 1730 event.

I'm hoping the book of Gourdon History - 1700 to 1800 by ARC Simpson, which I have ordered from by A&NESFHS, will throw some further light on the subject.
Can anyone elaborate further on this storm of 1730.
