Canada / French Canadian godparents
« on: Wednesday 23 February 22 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Just wondering if anyone had more information than I do on the role of godparents in Quebec during the 1800s.  The child is illegitimate so there is no mention of the parents but there are godparents mentioned in the baptism record.  I am hoping that the godparents could be related to the child.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Glamorganshire / help with 1939 register
« on: Tuesday 16 October 18 23:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help me with the enumeration districts in the 1939 England and Wales Register.  I have the address where my relatives lived but they don't show up when I search by their names.  I want to search the registry itself but was hoping someone could help me narrow the search.  When you search on ancestry the enumeration districts have numerical symbols rather than a name for the district. The address I am looking for is 57 Penrhys Ystrad. Pentre Rhonda Glamorgan.
Do you know what district Pentre would be in?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

I know that my 2x great grandfather was adopted.

I was just looking at my DNA matches and found I had a match with the adopting father and one of his sisters.  The common relatives were the parents of this brother and sister. So do you think I can conclude that my 2x great grandfather was a grandchild of the common relatives and that one of the adopting fathers siblings was a biological parent.

It would seem most likely that this would have happened as the adopting parents didn't have any other children and the adopting father had a large family of brothers and sisters.

Still trying to wrap my head around this and hope I have managed to describe this clearly. I just can't think of any other reason why I would have a DNA match with the adopting father.

Thanks for any input you can give me on this.

Somerset / Gillett/Chislett wrong name written down on marriage certificate?
« on: Wednesday 27 June 18 23:56 BST (UK)  »
I have a Joseph Chislett (b1850 Seavington St Mary) who married an Ellen/Eleanor (b1854 South Petherton) in 1872.  Marriage date is from the 1911 census. Joseph's father is James Chislett.  I can't find a marriage record for Joseph and Ellen/Eleanor.  I have found the family in all the censuses.

Yesterday I stumbled across a marriage record for Eleanor Baker and Joseph Gillett 1872 in South Petherton.  Joseph's father is given as James Gillett.  The original record says quite clearly the groom is Joseph Gillett. There's a couple of birth records for Joseph Gillett born about this time in Somerset but I can't find a Joseph and Ellen/Eleanor Gillett in any censuses.

I am pretty sure this must be the marriage record I have been looking for.  Given that both the groom and the bride could not read or write I can see how this could happen. Has anyone else run across the wrong name being written down.

Thanks

Canada / Notarial records Quebec Canada on Ancestry
« on: Monday 31 October 16 00:14 GMT (UK)  »
Just stumbled across the Notarial records today on Ancestry and wondered how useful they could be.  I gather they are just an index.  Is there anyway to access the actual record.  I found a record of my 3x great grandparents will but where to go next?

Thanks for any help.

I found some records in the Canada/British regimental registers of service on Ancestry for a Robert England from South Petherton, Somerset. He was with the 28th foot soldiers 1st and 2nd battalions in 1804 and 1806. I think the records for Robert England in the Chelsea Regimental Registers of Pensioners are most likely the same Robert although he is listed as coming from Devon.

Not sure where to go next.  I did find a record for a Robert England on Find my past. Before I renew my subscription I was wondering what kind of information I would find and whether it would be worth renewing.

I am curious to know how Robert would have ended up a soldier. He seems to have been the only one from his family to join the military.

Any help and information would be most appreciated

New Zealand Completed Requests / Electoral roll questions
« on: Thursday 17 July 14 20:58 BST (UK)  »
I have a few questions about the New Zealand electoral rolls on Ancestry.  I understand that registering was compulsory if you were of voting age - how accurate do you think the rolls are.  I've found several women who say married but there is no spouse listed in the same household.  So where are these missing men?  Working away from home?

I know women weren't eligible to vote until 1893.  Do you think that most if not all women registered if they were eligible.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Canada / Canadian Voters lists on Ancestry
« on: Friday 16 November 12 02:51 GMT (UK)  »
I don't know who transcribed the Canadian Voters lists on Ancestry.   They are a mess and these are transcriptions from typed lists not handwriting that can be difficult to read.  The lists must have been transcribed by computers otherwise how would you get HII Xetirrsom for Rita Anderson, or Franck Gnml for Francis Grant or Xvalter Taylor for Walter Taylor.  Half of the names on the list have been omitted. Some of the names are so badly transcribed I have no idea what the real name is
Khir Shiilz, XV Smctwcy, and my favourite He N N Ujv Ujv He.

Census and Resource Discussion / what does pensioner mean
« on: Sunday 07 October 12 02:42 BST (UK)  »
I have a marriage record where the groom is described as a pensioner but he's only 29.  Is it possible he was in the military - would that get him a pension so young in life?  Can't think of what else it could mean unless it's just a mistake.
thanks for any light you can shed on this.
