Please can someone take a look at this from Xmas 1938, with a view to improving it.  We have a family reunion in 2 weeks time and only one of the three will be present.
Many thanks.

Europe / Visit to Rotenburg(Wumme)
« on: Thursday 15 June 17 09:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
My wife's family name is Sandman and we have traced her line to Rotenburg(Wumme).  We are now driving in Europe and we shall visit the area at the end of June.  We hope to find some records and take some photos of the locations in which her ancestors lived.  Is there anyone who can advise us on how to proceed?  In particular, we are hoping to find a local family history addict who can talk to us (in English, please) about the area and its records.  Any further thoughts from the forum most gratefully welcomed.

Hello,
I have found an entry in the index for Cheshire Parish Registers on Familysearch for the burial of Mary Bithell, spouse Richard Bithell, on 18th July 1824 at St. Oswald parish, Chester.  Could somebody please check this out and provide the full text of the entry (especially age).

Australia / Looking for Richard Bithell convict freed 1857
« on: Thursday 13 September 07 11:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
Richard Bithell arrived in Tasmania in 1853 on the Oriental Queen.  I have received convict records from the Archives Office.  They show "Certs Hobart 20 Jany 1857", which I take to be his freedom certificate.  The date is correct for the completion of his sentence.

I would like to trace what happened to him thereafter.  He was 59 years old (approx) in 1857.  Please can someone look him up in the Death records as a starter.

He may be my ggg grandfather.

Thanks in advance.

Dorset / Portland Prison records
« on: Sunday 18 December 05 14:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Are there any records of prisoners in the Portland Convict Prison?  The 1851 census shows a list of prisoners, including Richard Bithell, age 52, Fisherman born Chester.  I would be very interested to see any supplementary info on this man and wondered if the prison may have kept their own lists, etc.

Thanks in advance

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / Chester Parishes - Thomas Bithell 1830
« on: Monday 05 December 05 23:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I am looking for the baptism/birth of Thomas Bithell.  Census records indicate Chester 1830.  Possible home address would be Handbridge, parish of St Bridget.  I have an older brother (possibly) as baptised in St Olave's parish whilst living in Handbridge (1821).

Thanks in advance

The Common Room / British subject born overseas
« on: Tuesday 04 January 05 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I wish to find the birth record for George Sandmann, born about 1820 and shown in the 1881 census as born Hanover British subject.

Does anyone know if there would have been UK records, and if so where are they now?  Or will the answer be in Germany only?

Apologies if you have seen this under Immigration, but I thought it might also be a General query.

Thanks in advance.

Europe / Explanation for "Born Hanover British Subject"
« on: Saturday 01 January 05 15:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

My wife's family search reveals a George Sandmann who is shown in the 1881 Census as Born: Hanover British Subject".

Can anyone explain if this means he was a British Subject at birth, born in Hanover (presumably of British parents travelling/living abroad)  OR
he was born a German subject and later took British nationality?

Thanks in anticipation.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Bithell in Chester about 1800-COMPLETED
« on: Friday 31 December 04 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone please help me to find Richard Bithell, born about 1800.  His son William was born 1822 (probably) and married Ann Worrall in 1840 in Great Boughton, Chester.  Richard is named on the marriage certificate.  He would be my GGG grandfather.
Reaching this point has been reasonably straightforward, but the chase now seems to be more difficult.  If I come to Chester, what would I be advised to look at?
Thanks in anticipation
