Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Messages on Ancestry DNA
« on: Tuesday 20 October 20 12:35 BST (UK)  »
I'm just interested to know if others think the new messaging system is working okay.

I know its common for messages to go unanswered at the best of times, and, for that reason, I don't send that many. I only now contact people if I think it would be really helpful to my research or to theirs to exchange info.

So I've only sent 3 since the new 'wonderful' messaging system was introduced and - not a murmur of a reply from any of them. I'd take it on the chin, as usual, if it wasn't for the fact that the latest one I sent was to a lady with a very big tree (private); who, like me, manages a few other accounts, and who actually states in her profile that she's happy to answer messages (i.e. she's obviously a serious researcher). But I've heard nothing.

I'm just typing these messages in a cramped little box that opens at the bottom of the screen and then clicking 'send'. My outbox seems to signal that the message has been sent but I'm now wondering if I'm missing out an important new step in the process!  ???

The Stay Safe Board / Rootschat's 'Stay Safe' board is mimicking social media
« on: Sunday 04 October 20 16:50 BST (UK)  »
I know its a good thing to have a discussion about certain aspects of covid, lockdown etc as well as an equally healthy difference of viewpoints.

However, I feel that its gone too far now and has started to mimic the worst kind of tweets etc on social media platforms. Its getting nastier and nastier. I'm not on social media (it doesn't interest me) but I've read some of the reports of just how cruel the postings can be.

There was recently a thread where contributors positively salivated at the prospect of Trump not surviving his covid diagnosis. Thankfully, it was locked by the people who run this site but not before it had got quite unedifying. He may not be everyone's cup of tea (certainly not mine) but he's a human being, after all.

Now, again, we have certain people rejoicing at the draconian measures handed out to people on the IoM. Lock 'em up, throw away the key, oh and by the way, don't feed them more than the absolute minimum. Really?

I admit I'm no saint in this respect but I do try to exercise some degree of humanity. It isn't enough to say that this is for the greater good because, if we have to resort to such thoughts and expressions, we are already lost.

Technical Help / How to access the hard drive?
« on: Thursday 30 July 20 17:37 BST (UK)  »
Do any of you computer savvy Rcers have any idea how to get into the 'workings' (I'm definitely not computer savvy!) of a very old Tiny PC tower?

I just want to dump it because its taking up valuable wardrobe space (it is BIG and HEAVY!) but I realise, before I do that, I need to get inside it and extract the hard drive and smash it to pieces in case it contains valuable information about what I was doing 15 years ago! I shall enjoy the smashing to pieces bit but I'm not enjoying the 'how to get to its insides' bit!

I've undone every little screw I can see but nothing seems to want to pull away from the main body of the damn thing. I even looked on You Tube (I know!) and found a computer chappie in his workshop on there who was getting into an old Tiny PC tower - similar to mine but not exactly the same. He seemed to slide something off but I can't figure out what, even though I've played the video back again and again.

I can't take a picture of it because I don't possess a smart phone. I did say I wasn't computer savvy!!!

Any ideas (please don't go technical on me!)

The Stay Safe Board / Eye tests & birthday cards!
« on: Tuesday 14 July 20 15:06 BST (UK)  »
I have to bite the bullet and catch a bus tomorrow. I have reluctantly acquired a face nappie so that I can get on the bl---y bus in the first place!

So, anyway, Q1 - I badly need some birthday cards. How does one go about this in this 'new normal'? Will the shop be open (the quirky, funny cards I want are at the back of a bookshop)? And will I be able to pick them up to look at and then put them back on the rack????

Q2 Has anyone been for an eye test under the new regime? Mine is overdue. How does it work exactly? Presumably I wear a face nappy but what does the optician wear? If its one of those plastic helmets, how can they see through their 'scope' thingies (technical term!) properly themselves?

Answers on a postcard.....

The Common Room / Surname: Corjeag
« on: Thursday 25 June 20 12:56 BST (UK)  »
I have just found a marriage in West Derby, Liverpool in 1895 between Henry Moss ( a 2nd cousin of mine) and Catherine Maria Corjeag/Corgeag.

I have never come across this surname before and assumed it had been mistranscribed but I've done a bit of searching and am no closer to finding out if its the bride's actual surname or whether I'm missing something (answers on a postcard....!!).

The marriage cert gives her residence as Isle of Man so I'm wondering if that might be the key? Is it an old IoM surname ?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Is Ancestry still operating as normal?
« on: Tuesday 09 June 20 12:21 BST (UK)  »
I know that, from time to time, I come on here to moan about my low numbers of matches, but I'd more or less resigned myself to the fact that others seem to have had - shall we say - more prolific ancestors and with descendants who aren't necessarily backwards in coming forwards! i.e. taking DNA tests.

And I've read Ancestry's blurb about how they're working normally during the pandemic.

And I appreciate that, for the past 2 or 3 months, doing a DNA test hasn't been foremost in most people's minds.

But, my total number of 4-6 gen matches over 20 cMs has been stuck on the same amount for weeks and weeks. Plus, although I have used lockdown to add lots and lots of cousins to my Ancestry tree, I have had no additional Common Ancestors.

Am I wasting my time? Well, no, because even cousins can have interesting lives! I've found quite a few who've emigrated to either Oz or N America and, only yesterday, a cousin who became a British Red Cross nurse during WW1.

However, my question is: are other people having the same experience as me with Ancestry? Do you think they're really working as normal? If not, it would be understandable but in that case I wish they'd just say so and stop me feeling like some kind of persona non grata!!

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Possible Guernsey marriage
« on: Wednesday 03 June 20 15:44 BST (UK)  »
This is the first time I've 'wandered' into the Channel Islands, family history wise, and there don't appear to be any marriage records on either FindMyPast or Ancestry.

I've found a couple on the 1911 census living in St Peter Port. He is Alfred George Matthews and says he was born there. His wife is Ellen (or Helen) Louise Crockford who was born in Berkshire. According to the 1911 census they were married c 1897. I know marriages often took place in the bride's home county but I can't find it so am assuming it took place in Guernsey.

Can anyone please find it for me?  :-\

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / adding to a managed DNA account's own tree
« on: Friday 15 May 20 17:06 BST (UK)  »
My niece took a DNA test with Ancestry a while ago and seemingly lost interest and let me take over management of her matches. At the time, she put up a very small tree of her own going only as far as her two sets of grandparents but with little detail.

Since then, she hasn't said much but I've noticed she does occasionally log into her matches. Not sure whether that's because she's at a loose end or if she really is interested but can't be doing with the leg work!!

I have linked her to my tree which, of course, as her auntie only refers to one half of her tree. I did some research for her late maternal grandmother a few years ago and would like to upload those details to my niece's 'stand alone' tree so that she at least has the information and can, if she wants, do something with it. However, even though she has handed over management of her matches to me, I can't seem to make any additions or amendments to her little tree!

Can anyone advise me why? I'd have thought it would be part and parcel of managing her account. Is there something else I need to do to gain access to her tree?

Also, in trying to find a way to do the above, I appear to have changed my status in her account to 'collaborator' rather than the previous 'manager' and can't change it back!!

I need help (true!) to get out of this pickle please!!
