The Lighter Side / A lively couple!
« on: Friday 17 November 23 23:51 GMT (UK)  »
I recently returned to see what more I could find out about what I thought was a very ordinary distant relation and discovered various stories about him and his wife in old newspapers:

- His wife sued another woman for assault and won
- He narrowly escaped drowning at sea after his brig was struck by a steamer
- His wife was a witness in a court case about a theft
- He and his wife were locked up for being drunk and disorderly
- He and his wife were taken to court for touting for lodgers on the pier

The Lighter Side / DNA Journey Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb
« on: Saturday 05 November 22 23:03 GMT (UK)  »
Anybody watch this last night on ITV?

DNA Journey
Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb

Series 4 - Episode 4- Two Gavin and Stacey faves - Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman - embark on a road trip to find out their family history through DNA and genealogy.

https://www.itv.com/hub/dna-journey/2a5252a0010

I found Alison's father's story fascinating with both dna and archive records pointing to him being adopted. Anything with an Isle of Man connection is of interest to me and I loved them visiting Malew Church where a lot of my ancestors are buried. I was there myself several weeks ago on a lovely sunny day. It's surrounded by fields it's a great place to walk to if the weather's nice. We walked from Ballasalla to Malew Church then on to Castletown.

The Lighter Side / Stick To Your Guns!
« on: Wednesday 15 June 22 10:26 BST (UK)  »
I would just like to say to all those out there who do genealogy properly and resist the pressure from others to add unsupported generations to their family tree, stick to your guns! You can feel like you're missing out seeing others adding those generations but it's better to have a smaller tree that's right than a bigger tree with mistakes on it.

Wicklow / Bray as a middle name
« on: Monday 03 January 22 17:27 GMT (UK)  »
I've just come across Bray as a middle name for a girl in my tree. I have a line that appears to go back to Bray but I wasn't totally sure about it until now. What a great clue!  ;D

Edit: Grandson of Bray man married woman with Bray surname some ancestors had a sense of humour  ;D

Wicklow / Nailer or Naylor, millers of Bray
« on: Thursday 09 January 20 16:27 GMT (UK)  »
Any information available anywhere on this C of I family from Bray? I have an ancestor born in Wicklow c1798 called Robert Naylor, no baptism found, a shoe maker. A second marriage in Liverpool reveals that his father was Daniel Naylor, a miller. The name Daniel recurs in this family so I'm confident this line is right. Irish Provincial Directory of 1788, by Richard Lucas has the following for Bray: John Nailer, Corn Dealer and Miller ... Daniel Nailer, Corn Dealer and Miller ...

Lancashire / Edward Bellion c1808-1868
« on: Sunday 07 July 19 12:01 BST (UK)  »
My Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather Edward Bellion was born in St Helens c1808 and died in Liverpool in 1868. He was a Clock & Watchmaker in Liverpool and is included on the city's World Museum's Horology Database:-

http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/wml/collections/horology/database.aspx

I was looking for a C of E baptism record for him for some years without any luck. It now appears he was raised catholic as he was buried in a catholic section in Anfield Cemetery, his wife was buried in a C of E section. He appears to have moved to Liverpool at an early age. He may be the son of a Charles Bellion who was apprenticed to Matthew Tootell 13 Dec 1791 Clock Maker at Hardshaw Within Windle.

There is a marriage of a William Bellion, clockmaker to Ellen Oakes at St Paul's Church Liverpool in 1838. The father was Charles Bellion Clockmaker. Edward Bellion married Mary Oakes so it looks like two brothers married two sisters. Samuel Oakes was the father of the two sisters. This William Bellion moved to Salford and was an optician. There was a William Bannion baptised at St Peter RC Liverpool in 1818, parents Charles and Sarah that might actually be him under a misheard surname.

The parents of Edward and William appear to be:-

Marriage: 9 Jan 1803 All Saints, Rainford, Lancashire, England
Charles Bellyan - Clockmaker Bachelor Of this Parish
Sarah Sorrelberry - (X), Spinster Of this Parish
Witness: Ralph Rhoden; Peter Birchall
Married by Banns by: Mathew Robinson Minister
Notes: Groom signs surname as 'Bielleuen'
Register: Marriages 1793 - 1812, Page 79, Entry 147
Source: LDS Film 1657567

Gore's Directory of Liverpool have the following:-

1816 Bellion Charles, watch maker, 26, Skelhorne Street
1818 Bellion Charles, clock maker, 26, Skelhorne Street

There are various Bellions connected to the Liverpool area including a Walter Uriah Bellion, watchmaker. I'm more interested in any more about Charles Bellion and Sarah Sorrelberry and any catholic records for this family in the St Helens area.

Does anyone know whether the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands will be included in the release of the England collection of the 1921 Census?
