The Common Room / Window tax in London 1720s
« on: Wednesday 03 April 19 14:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi
A family I am studying had a house in Marlborough Street in London, and a country house (!) at East Barnet in the early 1720s, and paid £1:10:0 annually for each property in window tax. Does anyone know how the tax was calculated at this time? I am trying to assess the size of the properties they are occupying.

Lesley

Somerset / Cyrus- died 1730 in Bath
« on: Sunday 14 October 18 18:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am wondering if anyone can trace a parish record for Cyrus, who died in Bath in 1730. This is all the information I have, apart from the fact his burial cost £3:10:0.
The Bath Burial Index looked potentially useful, but can only be searched by surname, and Cyrus, a black footman/postilion, appears not to have possessed one.

All ideas gratefully received.

Hi

Seeking to confirm information about Elizabeth Andrews born 1735. Her father is reputedly John, MP for Devizes, though I can't find confirmation of this.

Nottinghamshire / Sarah DIGGLE d. 1817 Basford
« on: Monday 20 March 17 22:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Please does anyone have access to the records of St Leodegarius in Basford? I am looking for a precise date of death or burial for Sarah DIGGLE who died in April 1817, and think the above church is the most likely.

Lesley

Cheshire / Thomas SHEEN in 1871
« on: Wednesday 27 May 15 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to establish a birth date  and birthplace for Thomas SHEEN.

FreeBMD has two possible deaths in Nantwich registration district:

Thomas Sheen in March Q 1872 aged 58
Thomas Sheen in December Q 1875 aged 56

If someone could please find him in 1871, probably with wife Ann and daughter Sarah, possibly in Tarporley (where Ann and Sarah were in 1881), I would be grateful.

Lesley

Durham / Ridley and Griffiths in Coundon 1850s
« on: Thursday 23 October 14 21:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi
My great-grandmother Hannah RIDLEY was born 30th April 1855 and christened on 19th May 1855 at Kelloe St Helen, the same church where her father John Ridley was buried six days later on 24th May 1855. Hannah was named after her mother, Hannah nee DIXON who was born in 1820 in Aycliffe.

Little Hannah, aged six, is in Easington workhouse in 1861 along with  three of her siblings. There is no sign of Hannah senior, so I have always assumed she was dead by 1861, though I couldn't find a record of her death.

I have found a transcript of a marriage at Coundon on 24th October 1857 between a Hannah Ridley and a Charles GRIFFITHS. FreeBMD has a death for a Charles Griffiths in the December quarter of 1857 in Auckland district, and a death for a Hannah Griffiths in Auckland district in the March Quarter of 1860. Could Hannah have remarried then been so unlucky as to lose her husband a few weeks after marriage?
Can anyone suggest a way of finding more detail of these events without spending £30 on certificates following up a rather wild hunch?
Regards,
Lesley

Hi
I'm trying to sort out multiple John FARRANDs.
Could anyone please tell me if there is any additional detail of parish, occupation or abode for the IGI marriage at Huddersfield St Peter's on 15th February 1779 between John FARRAND and Sarah DALTON?
Thanks

Kent Lookup Requests / Charlotte BOSHER of Chevening
« on: Sunday 28 July 13 19:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to find out more about someone whose name appears on an embroidered sampler.
Charlotte BOSHER was 12 years old in 1838, and looks likely to have been the Charlotte Bosher christened on 8th January 1826 at Chevening, daughter of William Bosher and Sarah.

FreeBMD has a death for a Charlotte Bosher in Dec 1857 (also deaths for Sarah Dec 1850 and William  March 1858), but I would be grateful if someone could find the family in 1841 and 1851, presumably in the Sevenoaks registration district.

Regards,
Lesley
