World War One / COMPLETED Yorkshire Regiment/RGA
« on: Friday 07 November 08 16:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I wonder if anyone can help me. I've found the service record of my grandfather, who joined the Yorkshire Regiment in July 1917. When I looked for his medals record, it said he was in the Royal Garrison Artillery. There's not much info on this - other than his name, rank, number and Corps - just the roll number for the Vicotry and British medals.

Why would he have transferred? Would there be anymore information I can find out about his service - ie what theatre he would have served in, what regiment he was in?

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks
Sarah

Armed Forces / Help with uniform

Hi there

I'm thrilled to say that my father-in-law has just found an interesting haul of photos including this one...

This is his uncle, William B Anderson, born in Broughty Ferry, near Dundee in 1900. I wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of his regiment in WW1?

Thank you

Sarah

World War One / Can you help with identification please?
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 18:13 BST (UK)  »
I think this was my grandma's beau who was killed in WW1. I expect he was recruited in the Manchester area. Can anyone tell me what regiment he was in?

Thank you in anticipation.

I've just been given some old photos and amongst them was this one. Judging by the age of my g uncle (top row far right), I'm guessing it was taken somewhere between 1902 and 1906.

I hope this might be of interest to someone

Armed Forces / Uniform identification

Hi all

I wonder if you could help me to identify the regiment from the uniform. There doesn't look to be much to go on in the photo but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Completed Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Isaac Henton - Sibson
« on: Tuesday 11 July 06 13:43 BST (UK)  »
With lots of help from Pinetree and Mike I'm beginning to piece together my Sibson connections.

My GGG Grandfather was Isaac Henton born around 1781 in Sibson. I think his parents were Richard Henton and Susannah Pearson who married in 1778. I was wondering if anyone has access to the records of baptims and could confirm this for me?

Kind regards
Sarah

Hi

I notice that whilst the marriages at St Margaret's are on the IGI, baptisms aren't - is there any reason for that? Will I find details if I went to the Leicester Records office?

Sussex / Walberton - Messenger family
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 21:53 BST (UK)  »
A bit of advice needed to help me breach my brick wall!

I have found the marriage of John Messenger to Sarah Wisdom on 28 December 1755 in Walberton, West Sussex. I know that Sarah was born in Walberton but I can find no  record of John's birth.

Because John's decendants seem to be the only Messengers in the area I am guessing that he came from elsewhere. My problem is how do I find out where he came from? If I go to Chichester records office is there a chance that the marriage record will give me the information to help me find his origins?

Any suggested routes forwards (or backwards to be more precise!) would be most welcome.

Europe / Hungarian place name
« on: Monday 03 April 06 18:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I've just got the application for naturalisation for an ancestor from 1856 which is very exciting. The birth place is given but it seems to be in Hungarian. I wondered if anyone would be able to help me pinpoint the location. I have attached the relevant bit from the application.

Yours hopefully
Sarah
