Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / importer of what?
« on: Saturday 07 October 23 22:28 BST (UK)  »
Any ideas what this might say, and what it means please? "Jno Henry Chapman fund holder, formerly importer of perfumed spirits", or possibly spices. Which is it please? And if it says spirits, does it mean wines or perfumes? First entry on the page.
Thanks

Shropshire / completely stumped
« on: Saturday 29 July 23 22:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm completely stumped with this problem, and hope that somebody out there can offer an idea of where I might look next.
Am looking for Mary Breeze, born December quarter of 1856 - Shrewsbury. In 1861 she is living with parents Joseph and Eliza (spelt Breese on this census only), and sister Martha. By 1871 both parents are dead and both sisters are in an orphanage in Bristol. Orphans were sent out to any part of the country on leaving the institution so she could have gone anywhere. Martha is quite easily traceable in subsequent censuses, but Mary seems to have vanished off the face of the planet!! She doesn't appear to have died, but the usual methods of finding a woman who has married have all failed. I don't know whether she might have gone abroad or not, or maybe married and then died before the next census. Does anybody have any tips on how I might crack this conundrum? Thanks

The Common Room / suppressed smallpox
« on: Friday 18 November 22 18:22 GMT (UK)  »
Does anybody know what "suppressed smallpox" is? I've googled it but not found an answer. I don't know whether its a milder form, or a smallpox infection in the vaccinated person, or a deadly form that doesn't have any spots, or any other explanation!
Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / this should be simple but
« on: Friday 28 October 22 19:29 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what this surname is, but not having any luck. I can see Eliza, but the surname is baffling. I won't write what I can see because that will prevent anybody else seeing it properly.
Thanks

Does anybody have access to "Bristol Municipal Burial Registers", produced on CD or download by the Bristol and Avon Family History Society please?
If so, would it be possible to look and see whether Louisa Hooper (died 14th July 1874) or Ida Gann (died 24th July 1893) are listed in it? I am trying to discover where orphans from the New Orphan Houses on Ashley Down were buried, and these two girls were orphans from that establishment. I have contacted the George Muller Charitable Trust, who keep all the records of the orphanage, but they are not able to tell me as they don't know.
Any help gratefully received, thanks.

Gloucestershire / bristol orphanage ashley down, bristol
« on: Saturday 13 August 22 17:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out where orphans who died at the orphanage at Ashley Down (Mullers) were buried. Does anybody know this, or if not, does anybody know where I might find the information - perhaps some archives in Bristol or something? There doesn't appear to be anything online to tell me, and searching online grave databases with a specific name doesn't bring anything up.
Thanks

An extract of a letter written regarding an orphan's admission to an orphanage. I've deciphered most of the very lengthy document, but there's a section which I can't work out no matter how many times I look at it. The bits marked with an x are the bits I'm wanting help with, but there may be mistakes elsewhere. All help gratefully received. Thanks.
