Gloucestershire / Jeffries
« on: Saturday 09 January 10 06:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone. Hope you all had a good Xmas and New year. Looking at the news here in sunny New Zealand, they tell me it has been a bit cold over there. Hope it didn't get to bad where you were.

I am trying to find details on someone that once lived in Marshfield, Gloucestershire. Lived just before registration records (about 1815) so need to look through earlier sources. Can anyone tell me a good site, please?

England / March-field
« on: Saturday 26 December 09 21:58 GMT (UK)  »
Ancestor of mine has, as the only piece of information I have, the place name where he came from, which is March-field or Marchfield. Tried to find this with Google but found no reference. However, I suspect the name may have changed over the years or possibly it is not a place name but a parish or similar?

Has anyone ever heard of March-field?

Cumberland / Joseph and Ann Bramwell
« on: Tuesday 01 December 09 10:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a Joseph Bramwell who married Ann Rain in 1795 at Garrigill. Can anyone give information about this couple at all?

I don't know anything else about them.

Cumberland / Church records
« on: Friday 27 November 09 01:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am hopeful someone can help. I believe I have some ancestors born about 1710-1720 around Alston, Cumberland. I can find the marriage records for the area but would like to find actual birth records. I take it this would be church records since no-one else recorded these things back then But which and where could I see them?

Cumberland / Counties and Alston

Wikipedia states (about Alston): "Despite the town being on the Tyne and being historically part of Tynedale the area has never been part of either Hexhamshire or Northumberland but part of Cumberland and later Cumbria. This was probably because the mines in the area were at one time administered from Carlisle."

However, a census reference I am looking at say that the individual was born in Alston, Cumberland but at the time of the census(1901) was living in Alston, Northumberland.

Has Alston ever been in Northumberland? Anyone know?

Cumberland Completed Lookups / COMPLETED Bram..well?..mer?
« on: Friday 06 November 09 04:13 GMT (UK)  »
Researching the Bramwell family of Garrigill, Cumberland. At some point in time, they seemed to use two names, Bramwell and Brammer. We have seen the last will and testament of Robert Bramwell (c1684) and he uses the surname Bramwell. However, later on, in 1776, Hannah uses the surname Brammer. Later, the family reverted to the surname Bramwell. Could it be a dialect thing?

Could there be some local use of names that might explain this? Is there anything else that might explain?

I have some ancestors that have something to do with Annatwalls. Could some kind person explain to me what that is? I have also seen it spelled Hannatwalls. Is there a difference?
