Offaly (Kings) / Birr Castle Archives -- SPRIGGE Family History
« on: Saturday 19 June 21 15:49 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if a kind soul who has access to the Birr Castle Archives, or perhaps the calendar of the archives, could possibly help with the following:-

From a summary of the Rosse Papers which are held in the Birr Castle Archive, it appears that there is some genealogical information relating to the SPRIGGE family which married into the PARSONS family, Earls of Rosse, in the 18th century.

The summary can be found here:-
https://birrcastle.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/SummaryList-of-the-Calendar-of-the-Rosse-Papers.pdf

...and on p.160, in the "Letters and papers of the 6th Earl and Anne, Countess of Rosse", it says,

Quote
FAMILY HISTORY
"Letters to the 6th Earl and Anne Countess of Rosse, some of them from Thomas U. Sadleir of the Office of Arms, Dublin Castle, and papers (many of them inherited from the 6th Earl’s uncle, the Hon. Geoffrey L. Parsons [see T/10]), about Parsons, Boleyn, Savage and Sprigge genealogy and family history..."

I would be very grateful to find out the extent of the information relating to the SPRIGGE family history in these papers, and whether the calendar fully captures the information. I am living in Australia, so a personal visit is not practical for myself at this time, and the calendar is too expensive for a purely speculative purchase.

The Birr Castle website, with information about visiting the archives can be found here:-
https://birrcastle.com/archives/

My specific family interest is to find siblings, or ancestor information, relating to William SPRIGGE (1638-1735), who was the father of:-
    Mary SPRIGGE (b. 1709)
    Margaret SPRIGGE (b. c.1711)

Mary SPRIGGE married Sir Laurence PARSONS, 3rd Baronet of Birr, on 5 Sep 1730, in Clonfert.

Mary and Margaret were the sole heirs of William SPRIGGE, so William is not my ancestor, but I suspect William SPRIGGE may have had a brother who might have been my ancestor. His only known sibling at this time is Lucy SPRIGGE, who married Peter HOLMES of Peterfield.

The earliest ancestor in this line I have proven at this time, is a John SPRIGG (b. c.1710 - d.1774), Gentleman of Waterford, who would seem to have been a likely cousin of Mary and Margaret, so any mention or connection to this John SPRIGG would be of particular importance.

Any further information on the siblings of William SPRIGGE, or his ancestors, or on John SPRIGG of Waterford, which might be available in the Birr Castle Archives would be of great interest.

Kind regards,
Marc Roberts

Sligo / Thomas CUNNINGHAM (c.1809-1877) of Rathlee
« on: Monday 04 May 20 12:23 BST (UK)  »
There have been a few queries about the CUNNINGHAM family of Sligo recently, the names seem very familiar... but then this is Ireland... so I'll add my contribution in the hope that we can establish some actual family connections somewhere:-

I know very little about this CUNNINGHAM family, it's been a block for me for a long while, so any clues at all would be helpful.

Thomas CUNNINGHAM
born. c.1809 based on his age given at the time of his death.
died. 15 July 1877 in Rathlee, County Sligo, aged 68.
  buried. Kilglass Cemetery, County Sligo.

The witness at his death was Sarah CUNNINGHAM, believed to be his wife who may have been formerly Sarah KILCULLEN. No details of their marriage or Sarah's birth or death are known.

Thomas CUNNINGHAM was a Coastguard boatman who served at various locations in his lifetime including: Ballina, Sligo (1839-1842), Mullaghmore, Sligo (1842-1844), Larne, Antrim (1844-1856), and Rathlee, Sligo (1856+).

In 1877, Thomas CUNNINGHAM, a "retired Coastguard boatman" of Rathlee, was received by the parish priest, John GRIFFIN, at Easky Church, near Rathlee, whereby he "abjured heresy" and professed his solemn Catholic faith. This note was inserted in the "baptism" records of Easky Church and suggests that Thomas CUNNINGHAM renounced his previous faith (or lack) and became a Catholic in his final days.

His only known child was:-
John KILCULLEN, born Patrick John CUNNINGHAM (1850-1916) at Larne, who joined the Royal Navy as an underage boy in 1864, with his father's permission, at Rathlee. John eventually deserted from the Navy in 1876, in Sydney NSW, changed his name, settled in Australia and thereafter claimed his parents were named Thomas KILCULLEN and Sarah CUNNINGHAM.

John KILCULLEN and his wife Jane SANDS married in Queensland in 1882 and had children:-
Janet Morrison KILCULLEN (1883-1969), named after Jane's mother.
  Thomas John KILCULLEN (1885-1953)
Robert Sands KILCULLEN (1886-1888), named after Jane's father.
  Ethel Sarah KILCULLEN (1887-1928)
  Francis James KILCULLEN (1889-1977)
  Frances Virginia KILCULLEN (1889-1961)
  Elizabeth Alice KILCULLEN (1892-1981)
  William Bernard KILCULLEN (1893-1964)
  Allan Norman KILCULLEN (1896-1980)
  Alexander Robert KILCULLEN (1899-1979)

Any information on the CUNNINGHAM and/or possible KILCULLEN connections to my family in Ireland would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Marc

Offaly (Kings) / William SPRIGG (1633 - 1707+) of Clonavoe c.1690
« on: Monday 04 May 20 10:10 BST (UK)  »
Hoping somebody might be able to help make a connection in my family tree.

I have traced my ancestry back to the following family:

John SPRIGG (c.1710 - 1774), gentleman of Waterford, Waterford IRE, left a will.
his wife Lydia (c.1710 - 1784), both died in Waterford.
Their children include:-
Samuel SPRIGG (c.1739-1832) attorney of Waterford, my ancestor, married Amy WOGAN.
Catherine SPRIGG (c.1740-?) married Thomas DALTON.
Anne SPRIGG (c.1750-?) married Thomas DELANDER.
William SPRIGG (c.1753-?) married Mary McCARTHY.

I've also been looking at the man who is the subject of this message, William SPRIGG (1633-1707+), as he appears to be a very likely candidate for an ancestor of the above John SPRIGG. The SPRIGG name seems quite uncommon in Ireland around this time, indeed William SPRIGG is the earliest bearer of the name I can identify, so there is only a gap of a generation or two between him and my John. I have found quite a lot of interesting information on William SPRIGG and his ancestors, so bridging this gap, if possible, would be a great advance in my family tree. Unfortunately information on his children and descendants has been very sparse, so this is where I could most use some help.

What I have so far:-

William SPRIGG (b.1633 Banbury, Oxfordshire, England - d.1707+ place of death unknown)
married 1671 in Dublin, to Margaret HAMILTON.
Their suspected children include:_
William SPRIGG (born c.1682 Cork, Ireland) marr. 1708 in Clonavoe, to Catherine DENNY.
They had two daughters only, Mary (1709) and Margaret.
Lucy SPRIGG, marr. c.1705, to Peter HOLMES.

So neither of the identified children above would be my ancestor, however it is quite likely there are other children of William SPRIGG and Margaret HAMILTON yet to be found.

The only other bearers of the SPRIGG name I've been able to locate in Ireland from the relevant time period are the following strays, who possibly fit into the picture somehow, and may be useful points of reference:-

Mary SPRIGG married 1721, to Nathaniel HUNT, in Ireland.
Catherine SPRIGG of Limerick, married c.1736 in Farrahy, Limerick, to Stephen BOWEN.
William SPRIGG, died 1791, Newcastle, Limerick, Church Minister, left a will.
Bartholomew SPRIGG, married 1769, Cork, to Mary COURCY.

I'll include some biographical information on William SPRIGG (1633-1707+) in a message below.

Bedfordshire Lookup Requests / ROWNEY families in Beds. in 1600's
« on: Monday 05 May 08 08:45 BST (UK)  »
I've located who I believe to be the earliest ROWNEY name bearers in Bedfordshire OPR. The details are following, but there is a simple question at the end:

John ROWNEY with wife Judith who were having children in the parish of Langford from 1691-1711.

Mary ROWNEY who married Robert FORTESCUE (or FOSCUE) in Potton in 1686, they had two children there, then Mary was buried there in 1689.

Elizabeth ROWNEY ("wife of John ROWNEY") buried in Biggleswade in 1706.

Elizabeth ROWNEY married Henry HALL in 1708 in Biggleswade. They have three children there between 1709 and 1715.

Braunston (or Braumston) ROWNEY marr. Elizabeth HUCKLE in Sutton in 1723 and they have children there between 1723 and 1739.

Jonathan ROWNEY marr. Mary BIRD in Potton in 1729, then apparently remarries (Mrs Frances WAGSTAFF) in 1731 and they are having children in Potton up until 1740.

The naming of children suggests Jonathan and Braunston were related.

John ROWNEY marr. Elizabeth HEWITT in Blunham in 1719, they have a son in Sandy in 1721 and then John apparently dies and was buried in Sandy in 1725. Elizabeth is buried in Sandy as a widow in 1739.

Another John ROWNEY and an Elizabeth ROWNEY are both buried in Biggleswade in 1737. They are thought to have been the married son and unmarried daughter of John and Judith (above), but this is not certain.

***

Looking at all of the above it seems entirely possible that a single ROWNEY family living somewhere around Biggleswade in the mid 1600's could be responsible for bringing the relatively uncommon ROWNEY surname to Bedfordshire. The parishes with known early ROWNEY presence in rough chronological order seem to be Potton, Langford, Biggleswade, Blunham (one marriage), Sandy, Sutton, Dunton, Northill, and Southill.

I was hoping that someone with access to records from the 1600's such as Poll Tax or Hearth Tax, may be able to check to see whether any ROWNEY families/households appear, and if so, where and how many? I'm not sure how the records are organized, so a search of the above parishes would hopefully be sufficient to answer the question, although a countywide result would obviously be more conclusive.

Any information at all on the very early ROWNEY families in Bedfordshire would be invaluable.

Many thanks and best wishes,
Marc Roberts

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / 1841 Census - Tiddington/Albury - RADFORD
« on: Tuesday 25 October 05 17:28 BST (UK)  »
Could I please request a lookup in the 1841 census for the following family?

John RADFORD (no details known)
Penelope RADFORD (born c.1786, possibly at Long Crendon BUCKS - widowed living in Albury in 1851)

their known children;
Thomas RADFORD (b. c.1816, married 1836 settled in Albury)
Elizabeth (b. c.1817, unmarried living with mother in 1851)
Emma (b. c.1819, married in Thame District in 1842)
Rebecca (b. c.1821, possibly married in Thame District in 1842)
James (b. c.1830, unmarried living with mother in 1851)

The main points I'm trying to find at the moment are; whether the father John RADFORD was still alive in 1841, any information about him, and whether there may have been any other children.

Any information about children in the area not living with John and Penelope in 1841 would be considered a very welcome bonus.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,
Marc Roberts

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / 1851 Census - Surfleet/Gosberton - Susan CHRISTIAN
« on: Monday 26 September 05 16:54 BST (UK)  »
Could I please request a lookup for my ancestor in the 1851 census of Surfleet, or possibly nearby Gosberton:-

Susan(nah) CHRISTIAN, widow around 48 years old, believed born in Pointon.

Hopefully she will have a couple of children in her household. They were farmers around Surfleet, but the father died in 1850, and the family had scattered back to the Pointon area by 1861. I would like to try to account for all of her younger children.

Thank you very much for any assistance.

All the best,

Marc

Bedfordshire Completed Look ups / 1841 Census - Riseley - ROWNEY
« on: Sunday 25 September 05 16:26 BST (UK)  »
Could I please request a look-up for the following family in Riseley from the 1841 census:

John ROWNEY [b. c.1800]
Hannah ROWNEY [b. c.1804]
known children-
Samuel ROWNEY [c.1825]
George ROWNEY [c.1827]
William ROWNEY [c.1829]
Thomas ROWNEY [c.1831]

some of them may be deceased.

Any other ROWNEY's in town would also be of great interest.

I would also be very interested to know whether the household of William and Mary FLAVELL (or FLAVEL or FLAVIL, etc) is nearby. I'm particularly concerned with their daughter Maria FLAVELL [b.1825] who later married a related ROWNEY in Australia.

Many thanks for any assistance.

All the best,
Marc
