Australia / NSW Parish Maps
« on: Wednesday 10 June 20 01:34 BST (UK)  »
I a trying to get copies of NSW Parish Maps from 1881 onwards.  Preferably digital copies.
It appears that these have to be sourced through private agents.  I am having trouble navigating the process.
Can anyone provide me with some guidelines as to how to do this?
With thanks,
Anniebelle

Cork / Catherine Long Convict 1822
« on: Tuesday 13 June 17 04:28 BST (UK)  »
I have a Convict Ancestor Catherine Long who was tried at the Spring Assizes 1822 in Cork City. She was transported to NSW on the "Woodman' in 1823 for 7 yrs. The Convict Indent and her Cert of Freedom (3 Apr 1829) give her native place as Woolwich. Her calling was Servant.  Her death certificate states she was born in Ireland and her father was John Long, farmer. Some researchers say she was baptised at Kingston on Thames in 1807 with parents John Long and Ann Durham. Kingston on Thames is 20 miles from Woolwich, Kent.
I can see no evidence that the Catherine Long baptised at Kingston on THames is my convict.
I was wondering if there was/is a Woolwich in Ireland.
Can anyone help Please?

Australia / NSW Hulks
« on: Sunday 19 January 14 00:11 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there were prison hulks in Port Jackson, NSW in convict times where those with a colonial sentence were sent?  If so, are there any records available that record who may have been sent to a hulk and what happened to them after?

Any direction as to where to go would be appreciated.

Armed Forces / 13th Light Dragoons 1840s onward
« on: Tuesday 24 July 12 02:19 BST (UK)  »
As part of my research I am trying to locate what happen to Seath Matthews after 1841. He was baptised at St Andrew, Canterbury on 25 Jul, 1819, the son of George Matthews and Margaret Matthews.  He was listed in the 1841 Census as a Private, aged 20 yrs, b Kent, at the Cavalry and Artillery Barracks,  13th Light Dragoons in St Mary Northgate, Canterbury, Kent.  Following this I have been unable to find any record of him at all.

Does anyone know if there are records which tell of the history of the 13th Light Dragoons and where they are located? Or any books of the Dragoons history and places they may have been located?

Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I am attaching 2 copies of a document which I would appreciate some comments on.  This doc relates to approvals for families allowed to join their convict husband/father in Aust. My problem is the spouse surname.  My interpretation of the entry I am interested in is as follows:

-Kildare (County)
-59 (Entry Number)
-Hynes/Lynes Thos or Edward (Convict name) Note: He was convicted and transported as Thomas Hynes but used the name Edward Lyons for all his life in Aust - I am pretty sure his correct name was Edward Lyons.
-Mary Masatt ??? (Wife's name)
-2 (Children)
-Two Mile House near Rose Town known to Robert latouch Esq. Harris Town, Thos pagden Esq. Green Hills; Penley Moore Esq. new? Bridge, Co Kildare and to Sir Wm Betham, Mount Hillier Blackrock near Dublin.

The data base on line has the following: Wife Mary Massal, residing at Two Mile House near Rose Town.

All help appreciated,
Anniebelle

Australia / Victoria Immigration Records
« on: Thursday 13 January 11 01:19 GMT (UK)  »
I live in rural NSW and was hoping someone might have easy access to the records of immigrants to Vic. I can only access what is online.

I am looking for the details of an Ann Gordon who arrived as an unassisted immigrant on the 'Owen Glendower' which arrived in Vic from a Bristish port in January 1859. PROV lists the detail as Fiche 158, page 005.

Does anyone have easy access to this detail and would be prepared to post the details?

It would be greatly appreciated.

With thanks, Anniebelle.

Australia Lookups completed / UK Prison Hulk Register & Letters
« on: Monday 11 October 10 21:32 BST (UK)  »

I have a convict, Thomas Hynes, tried in Wicklow in 1824 and transported in the 'Lonach' in 1825 to Aust.  I have found the following reference in the recently released UK Prison Hulk Registers & Letter:

No 2432, Thomas Hynes, Hulk 'Fortitude', 1822-1836, moored at Chatham.

There are no details as to place of trial, native place or how disposed of.

I was wondering if someone with more knowledge of the Hulk Registers and Letters could tell me if:

There is any way of linking prisoner no 2432 to more specific details
 or
knowing if Irish convicts were incarcerated on the Hulks in these Registers.

With thanks,

Anniebelle

Australia / Joseph HAYES - Marriage or Death
« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 09:43 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find the marriage or death records, in NSW, without success, of Joseph Hayes.  He was born abt 1850 in Tipperary, Ireland and came to Aust at abt 4 years old with family on "Merchantman" as Assist Immigrants arriving in Vic.  By 1856 they were living in Maitland NSW & from 1862 in Singleton NSW.  The last record I have of him is that he was 17 yrs old at the date of his mother's death in 1868.  His parents were Cornelius and Honora Hayes (nee Kennedy).  Can anyone with access to Marriage & Death records in other states see if they can see him.? It would be appreciated, with thanks.  Anniebelle.

Australia / Patrick & Margaret HAYES,Tipperary to Aust
« on: Sunday 18 April 10 01:53 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information on what happened to the Patrick & Margaret Hayes family who came to Aust in April, 1854 on the "Merchantman" as Assisted Immigrants. Immigration records show:

Patrick, Ag lab from Tipperary, RC, Reads, 46 yrs assigned to Mr Wills, Collingwood.  He travelled with:
Margaret, Tipp, RC, Neither R nor W, 39 yrs;
Judith, Tipp, RC, R&W, 13 yrs
Thomas, Tipp, RC, R&W, 11
William, Tipp, RC, R&W, 9.

There may also be older sister/s, Ellen, 2 on board, 22 yrs & 18 yrs; Mary, 2 on board 20 and 19 yrs, Ann, aged 16.  There is also another family of Hayes on board.
The other family of Cornelius & Honora moved to NSW by 1856.

Can anyone with access to Vic records see any information re Patrick's family or is anyone descended from them?

Thanks, Anniebelle
