The Common Room / Where is she buried?
« on: Wednesday 03 April 24 20:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello all

My husbands great grandmother died in 1938. We discovered today, thanks to a newspaper article, that she committed suicide. There is a report on the inquest, but nothing at all about a burial is in the newspapers (that I can find).
I can't find any burial records, but I think that is due to the time period is still not online at the moment.
She lived in a village called Thaxted in Essex. So, I wondered if a) she isn't buried there but in the closest municipal cemetery b) because of her death, her burial was secret or was her body returned to her place of birth in Finchley, London.
Her name was Clara Johnson nee Neville, 1872-1938
Her husband George William Johnson married again a few months later after advertising for a housekeeper/companion in the newspapers!
thanks in advance

Yorkshire (West Riding) / George Johnson died 1960 Bradford - is he ours?
« on: Wednesday 03 April 24 14:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello all
So, Great Grandfather, George William Johnson (b. 20 Apr 1881, London), married for the 2nd time very quickly after his first wife died. He married a lady called Ethel Rayner (married name Ethel Goff) who was a widow. They are still living in Essex in 1939. However, there was some sort of upset in the family and at some point George and Ethel moved away. Not heard from again and there really isn't anyone left alive to tell us anything. I did some digging on Ethel. She had a daughter who lived in Bradford but was widowed quite young. I have found a death for George William Johnson, so I ordered the death cert and it arrived this morning.
It says George William Johnson died 17 Aug 1960 at 24 Silverhill Road, Bradford. It says he was 79 years old, so the age matches. Informant was E. Johnson, widow. So that almost matches.  There's nothing else on there to give me any clues to if he is our George or not.
So, are there any other records which I could search? The only thing I can find online is the 1939, which we already have.
I don't even know which cemeteries there are, or even if there's a grave stone.
Any ideas please!
Thanks

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / FTM 2024?
« on: Wednesday 27 March 24 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I’ve seen on my history that FTM 2024 is out. However, it seems odd that you have to buy it, then download FTM 2019 first and wait for the upgrade to be sent out.
I can’t seem to find any other site, not even the makers of FTM advertising it. Any ideas?
Thanks

London and Middlesex / London Female Penitentiary
« on: Sunday 29 October 23 19:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Can anyone help me please?
I have an ancestor (Kate Giddings/Giddings) on the 1881 census as an inmate at London Female Penitentiary, Pentonville, This is NOT Pentonville prison, and appears to be a charity building for fallen women of sorts. However, searches on Ancestry and FindMyPast want to search prison records - which is isn’t, but it also isn’t an asylum or a hospital.
Kate then appears in Staffordshire getting married in 1884. I’m trying to find the discharge records so that I can find out when and why she went to Staffordshire.
Previous to this she was in an industrial school in London, put their by her grandmother, with the statement that her parents had deserted. No name for the grandmother or the parents. And I do feel like her surname wasn’t the name she was given at birth. I can’t find a birth record for her, but it should be sometime around 1860.
I have all of the information from her marriage onwards.
Any help would be amazing,
Thanks in advance

United States of America / Obituary for David J Brookes
« on: Friday 15 September 23 15:11 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone kind enough to find an obituary for me please?

David J Brookes
died 3rd Jan 1996 age 53 in Arizona

I think this is the person I am looking for, but aren't sure. I don't know who his parents were but know he had 3 children Paul, Stephen and Elizabeth.  I'm not trying to find any living people, but I want to just find out where and when he died. I've been given his name, year of death and Arizona!

If anyone can shed any light, or tell me where to find this info, I'd be very, very greatful

The Lighter Side / Items for a museum
« on: Monday 07 August 23 16:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
Recently my mother in law passed away and we are in process of getting rid of "stuff".
We have a collection of items dating back to the 1960's which are in very good condition and it seems a shame to throw them out. Dressing table, set of drawers, 1963 electric blanket to name a few.
Does anyone know of any museum (apart from the Black Country Living Museum as they don't need them) that may be interested in the items?

Many thanks

The Common Room / Carr-Butterton Shropshire/Cheshire?
« on: Friday 19 May 23 13:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone!
Hope all is well with you, wherever you are!

I have found an entry of Banns readings in Hanmer, Shropshire for Herbert Carr and Mary Butterton.
The 3 dates entered are Dec 16th, Dec 23rd and Dec 30th 1894.
However, the third date is not signed and written diagonally across it is:
"Forbidden by John Carr father of Herbert Carr ????? at Threapwood. H.H."  (H.H. are the vicars initials)
Can anyone read what the word before "at Threapwood" says?
Herbert and Mary did get married later in 1895 but I can't find any parish records for them.

thanks!

Leicestershire / Susanna Ilston/Illston/Illstone
« on: Saturday 11 February 23 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I'm trying to find out information on
Susanna Illston/Ilston/Illstone

Born 1798 in Sharnford, baptised on 20th Jan 1799 daughter of Jno and Elizabeth Illston

Mother of William Illstone, born 1820 in Sharnford.  No father on baptism entry.

I can't find anything else other than those 2 bits of information.  William states later on his marriage certificate that his father was Allen Sanders/Saunders. I can find him, but only as a widower and haven't established yet who his wife was.  But I don't think it was Susanna.

Any help would be gratefully received!!

Many thanks!

The Common Room / Imogen Holst
« on: Sunday 01 January 23 22:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone and Happy New Year!

We are trying to see if there’s any substance in the claim that a now deceased family member actually did have piano lesson from Imogen Holst, the daughter of composer Gustav Holst.

The family member lived in Thaxted between 1940 and 1968.
We know Gustav died in 1934 but I also know his widow, Isobel Holst, lived in Thaxted after his death, during the 1950’ and until she died in 1969.
Daughter Imogen didn’t live in Thaxted during the 1949 - 1968 time period, but did she stay with her mother? I can’t find anything, but know that there maybe someone on here who either knows Thaxted history exceptionally well, or has lots of in depth knowledge on Imogen Holst,or can find things on the internet better than I can!

Is there anything anywhere that could actually show that Imogen Holst really did give music lessons in Thaxted during the time window I have?

Good luck
