Lancashire / Sentencing for manslaughter?
« on: Monday 30 May 22 13:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to figure out when someone would have been released from prison.

James Fitzpatrick was convicted of manslaughter in Prescot in 1881. Having kicked his wife Margaret Black to death on the doorstep of their home.

He was given a 15 year sentence of manslaughter and avoided hanging because he was deemed to be intoxicated and therefore it wasn't pre meditated.

I found him in prison still in the 1891 census 10 years later in Gillingham Kent.

I'm trying to find out if back then was it possible for prisoners to be released early as they are now for good behaviour?

I ask because I can't find any release date for him after 15 years nor can I find him in the 1901 census, no death either nor an emigration record.

I can find no trace of him after 1891.

Thanks

Sammy.

Is this any chance someone could have a go at fixing this photo, I've tried and got nowhere.

It's a mess I know, it was badly water damaged.

Lancashire / Thomas Hornby Hayes?
« on: Friday 07 January 22 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
I'm having problems in the 1921 census.

I've looked up my grandfather who was at that time 6 years old.
His father on his birth certificate as Thomas Hornby, His mother is Sarah Ellen Hayes.
He is registered on his birth certificate as Thomas H Hayes.
His Mother married Thomas Hornby 2 years after the birth in 1917, yet in the 1921 census Sarah Hayes has changed her surname to Hornby but the child is still there as Thomas H Hayes 4 years after the marriage.
I'm confused as to why the mother changes her surname and the child remains as Hayes even though Thomas Hornby is registered as father on the birth certificate the same man she married?

Is this normal at that time, or does it possibly suggest that Thomas Hornby is in fact not the real father?

I do know after the death of Sarah in 1929, Thomas H Hayes is 14 at that time and leaves home as soon as he can to join the army and never see's his father again.
Also When Sarah dies, Thomas Hornby her husband owns burial plots in St Helens Lancashire. He is buried there with his mother father and brother. But when his wife dies in 1929 Sarah is buried in a paupers grave in the same cemetery, even though I know Thomas Owned the plots before Sarahs death. It's all very confusing to me.

Can a birth certificate be changed years later to add a father who wasn't originally on it?

I do also know that Sarah had 5 children and on every birth certificate was a fake farthers name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated from someone who might know more than me.

Thanks

Sammy.

I'm wondering if someone could give some idea of a date for these photos please.

I think the wedding photo may be slightly later than the others but I'm not sure.

Lancashire / Elsie Hurst and Florrie Watkins?
« on: Friday 30 April 21 14:04 BST (UK)  »
I'm having some trouble finding the sisters of Fred Hurst. I have no idea what happened to them after 1911.

Elsie Hurst was born in 1897 in St Helens. Fred was born in 1900 St Helens, they had an adopted sister Florrie Watkins also born St Helens.

Fred was married to my grandfathers sister, Annie Clisham ne Hayes. They married June 11th 1938 in St Helens. It was a Catholic marriage. So I know what happened with him.

But Elsie and Florrie I just can't find after 1911. No marriages. The reason I want to find them is that I have a photo of Fred and Annie Marrying. Fred has his arm around a girl aged about 12, I don't know who she is, but she looks similar to Fred. I'm guessing it's a child of Fred's sister. but I'm not sure.

Sorry I know this is confusing.

Fred I know had no children. So this child is not his. I'm hoping someone can find some trace of Elsie and Florrie.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Gerty?
« on: Thursday 06 August 20 13:06 BST (UK)  »
This is a photograph of a marriage of someone I only know as Gerty.

She was my grandfathers, sisters best friend throughout her life.

I  need someone who is good at dating photographs to help me with the rough date for this wedding. I'm thinking late 1920's or early 1930's but I'm not sure.

It took place I think in St Helens (95% sure on this)  Lancashire. If it wasn't St Helens I think it will be Chorley.
I know Gerty was a Catholic. Sadly I don't know which church this was.

The only other things I know about her are that she was born around 1898, she had no children and her husband(who's name I don't know) was in the army and killed early during WW2.

I know this helps nobody but it's sadly all I know.

Aberdeenshire / Robert John Kelman
« on: Saturday 03 August 19 10:10 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the parents of Robert John Kelman.

Robert was born in Huntly in 1928 and died in Aberdeen aged 40 in 1968. I know he married Margaret Davidson in 1957 but the marriage didn't last.

I know nothing else about him and I'm struggling to get back any further.
Any help would be great.

Oxfordshire / James Ayres???
« on: Monday 29 May 17 15:52 BST (UK)  »
I'm having serious trouble with this family.

Daisy Victoria Ayres born 1903 in Eynsham Oxfordshire. I have her in 1911 with her family.
Father James Ayres b. 1865, mother Annie born 1866 apparently both born in Eynsham??

I can't find the family in any other census before 1911, nor can I find a marriage for James and Annie?

In 1911 it states that they've been married for 22 years. I can't find a birth for James either around 1865?

Any help would be very much appreciated

Sammy.
