Armagh / Gillow family and a George Scattergood
« on: Wednesday 01 June 11 15:19 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with any info about the family of John Gillow who lived in Ballynaleck nr Poyntzpass.  I cannot find exactly when he was born but I estimate it was around 1840.  He had two daughters - one was my grandmother - the other was named Martha Caroline and she married a man named George Scattergood (what a great name!) in Belfast in 1908.

Armagh / Liggett family - Ballynagreagh and Tandragee
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 10:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have traced my family back to a Thomas Liggett, a protestant, in Ballynagreagh Townland and by a good piece of fortune I found his marriage cert (he married Ellen Murphy in Banbridge in 1855, interestingly in a Civil Marriage!) - hence I know the name of his father.
Thomas was born about 1814, however I cannot confirm his birth date nor can I locate anything more about his father (Samuel).
Obviously I am looking back before Civil Registrations began so I then turned to Parish Records.  Sadly CI Acton and CI Clare records have been destroyed - Ballymore Parish records do survive but I cannot clearly identify any ancestors in them.  During that part of the search I found a number of Liggetts in Tullyhugh Townland and while I feel it is possible that this is all part of a greater family  - I cannot find clear proof of a direct relationship

My question is to those that have a much greater knowledge and experience of records in Ireland - Do I now just admit that I have now reached the end of my search on this line or do I have one more - remote - possibility left?

Armagh / Adoption - early part of 20th C
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 14:15 BST (UK)  »
I have a family member that was adopted at only a few days old - in 1919.  The baby was born in Belfast although she came to live with the family in Co Armagh.
The mother had died during childbirth and I am sure I remember my Dad telling me that the baby was related to our family - possibly explaining why the adoption was agreed quite quickly.

I would like to find some more info about the birth-family - does anyone have thoughts about how I track down some data surrounding an adoption or even what the rules and regulations were at that time?

Armagh / Townland - Druminargal or Drumingal??
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 11:32 BST (UK)  »
On the 1911 Census I can find an ancestor living in Drumingal (Ballyshiel Election District) - however, I had always thought the townland name that I was looking for was Druminargal.

Does anyone know if I am looking at a small alteration to the spelling or have the Census Administrators defined things slightly differently and I must consider it to be a different place?

The thoughts of those with more experience of Armagh townlands will be very welcome
