Hi

Yes I am still active and also still actively researching the Bennett's. Would love to hear what information you have to share.

Have had numerous DNA connections to Bennett relations since the original post, but mainly from John Bennett and Betty Adams in Hampshire. This John being the person I mentioned at the end of that post, the cordwainer who lived in Southampton but was originally from Fontmell Magna, Dorset.

Thank you again Sinann

I have found the house in Irishtown, where the Boyles were living, on Google Maps. So able to show Bill where his mother was born. I had though Irishtown was a suburb. I did not realise it was a road.

Thanks too for the Limerick link.

Cheers

Denise

Hi Sinann

I missed the blue bar at the top with next and previous on it the first time I pasted the URL into the tools page, silly me. Have found them on the summary sheet now.

Thanks again so much. My friend's Dad is 91 and his health has taken a turn for the worse so the more we can find for him on his family the better. He remembers visiting his grandmother, Mary Boyle, in Limerick when he was a child. His mother was the daughter born two years after the 1901 census.

Thanks

Denise

That is fantastic. How did this work? Does it mean that they were not indexed but you found them by looking directly at the film? There does not appear to be an address on the sheet. Did you find them in Irishtown, Clonmel?

I had missed Bridget as she wasn't on the 1911 census with her parents, but was a live in servant elsewhere. I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed any other children.

Thank you so much Sinann. Rootschat solves the problem again.

Thanks

Yes that is the family I am working on. Just wish I could find them in the 1901 census.

Hi Heywood

Thank you for your quick reply. I thought I was going nuts. Nice to have someone else confirm what I was beginning to think.

Tipperary / Missing from 1901 Census - Boyle

Hi

I am researching for friends of mine. Their family were the Boyles from Clonmel, Tipperary. I can find them on the 1911 census no problem, but no matter what I try I cannot locate them on the 1901 census. Are parts of Tipperary missing from the 1901 census?

The family are James and Mary Boyle with children Mary 1887, John 1889, Michael 1891, Bridget 1893, Patrick 1894, Catherine 1896, James John 1898, Ellen 1900. The parents and the first five childern were born in Limerick (Tervoe for the children). Catherine, James and Ellen were born at Marlfield just outside of Clonmel. The next child born after the 1901 census was born in Irishtown, Clonmel.

I have looked for them in both Tipperary and Limerick in 1901 with no luck. James Snr was a gardener.

Any suggestions appreaciated.

Thanks

Denise

Hi Ciderdrinker

I think the Bennett family I am looking for is related to the one you mention who came out of Wiltshire, but that they are a junior branch of that family.

John C Bennett wrote in 2008:
"The Bennetts of St. James Parish, Shaftesbury, were tanners since 1539; but by 1658 there were several branches, and we can be certain only that the top line of the family were still tanners at that date. The family was probably descended from Bennett of Pythouse[10], Tisbury, Wiltshire--landowners and agents of Crown and Church in south Wiltshire since 1225. It makes sense a St. James Bennett would marry the daughter of the shoemaker, who would certainly have crafted boots of tannery leather. There are a few options for her possible parents: Thomas Bennett (Tanner) and Joane?, Robert Bennett Sr. (a tanner?) and Mary?, Anthony Bennett (occupation unknown) and Elizabeth, or John Bennett and Unknown [...] I have done further research on the Bennet tanners of Shaftesbury St. James. It is believed they stemmed from the Bennetts of Pythouse before 1540. My ancestors moved from Shaftesbury St. James to Fontmell Magna circa 1680 to work at the Fulling Mill at Springhead (Estmill). Their descendants came back to Shaftesbury as tanners in the mid-18th century. These were the ancestors of Charles James Fox Bennett, Premier of Newfoundland."

I have tried to find more posts and/or a family tree by John C Bennett with no luck. The ancestor of Charles James Fox Bennett that he mentions is a John Bennett, Quaker, who I believe is the brother of Walter's father, Thomas.

My difficulty at the moment is trying to prove that the John Bennett born c 1756, cordwainer, who ended up in Southampton is indeed the son of Walter Bennett and Jane Clench from Fontmell Magna/St James, Shaftesbury.  DNA has proved our connection with the Southampton Bennetts, now I would like to take it back a step further.

Thanks again

Hi Nanny Jan

I have been going through the Dorset OPC pages for Shaftsbury, Fontmell Magna and surrounding parishes. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my query.

Cheers
