Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Could this mean gay??
« on: Saturday 19 December 20 19:14 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all for your thoughts! He signed up aged 18 and was a career soldier, till invalided out with ‘hepatic disease’ after 25 years. So I’m not sure he was reluctant to join up. He married later in life and had a large family, so my theory may be way off! A fake speech impediment just seems a really odd idea.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Could this mean gay??

Hi - I have a document where I think I have deciphered the handwriting but still do not understand it!

It is an 1825 Attestation for Regiments. It is a pencil note  at the bottom of the page. It appears to read:

‘The little finger right hand is a little bent - would make you believe that he has an impediment of speech but it is all shuffle.’

I believe ‘shuffle’ might mean untrue, but I’ve no clue how fingers connect to speech....so I wondered if it might be a strange pre-Victorian way to say someone’s gestures or voice suggest they might be gay? It’s a leap, but I’m at a loss!

Any ideas? Thank you!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and help. Most likely solution seems to be that she was single then, but named a father for the baby when she got him baptised. By the next census she has married and William Samson is described as husband's stepson. The next, William has taken her husband's surname and dropped the William - Samson Harding. He died aged 23, Reg'd as William Sampson Harding. Sampson was a family name but William was not, so many it is the nameWilliam that linked to the dad. Maybe that was why he didn't use the name William for a while.
Thank you!

Hello
Does anyone have advice or similar experiences? I have William Samson (or Sampson) Bird. From his birth certificate, he was born on 5th October 1863 in Park Lane, Aston. His mother was Clara Bird. From the family history, she was unmarried and Bird was her maiden name.   No father named.

William was baptised on 25th October at St Peter and Paul, Aston. The address is still Park Lane, but he has acquired a father, William Bird, a jeweller.

So has she lied? Got a man to stand up with her to christen her son? Would the vicar not know that she was actually unmarried? Was it easy to get away with this?

Thanks for any thoughts on this little puzzle.

« on: Saturday 30 September 17 20:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I wondered if anyone can look up a Shoreham marriage if possible? I believe it was 4th November 1843, at St Peter and Paul, Shoreham,  between William Whitehead and Ann Hoare. I would like confirmation of the date and any other details available. Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / lookup request, St Giles Church Rowley Regis

Hello everyone - can i ask a favour? I would love more details of a marriage that took place at St Giles Church, Rowley Regis in 1880. I don't know the date but it was registered in the 3rd quarter. Marriage was between Thomas Rudge and Mary or Mary Ann Mack. If anyone can find out date, fathers details  and witnesses that would be fantastic.

Hi
If any kind person is visiting Gloucester Records Office, could they look up a marriage and baptism for me?

I am hoping to check the details for a marriage that I believe took place in Northleach on 7th August 1792 between Susannah Bowne and William Collett. Susannah was from Northleach. I am hoping that it might have more information on William - bachelor or widower, or which parish he was from.

Also the baptism of William Collett, son of William and Susannah Collett, in Northleach on 17th August 1795. Again, any additional information would be really helpful.

Thank you!
Kate
