Hi, I expect you've seen this, but googling his name produces a record from the National Archives that gives the relevant dates and his warrant number at least...

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C13365347

"Charles Joseph Stanley, warrant number 110111. Joined on 17 May 1920, and left on 23 Oct 1923. Last posted to X Division as a PC."

Also found several newspaper mentions of him on Find My Past.

Thanks for this 😊 have found some interesting bits and pieces!

I meant to mention before about the tidy justification of writing on all margins. That's something you wouldn't expect to see on speedily written shorthand and doesn't happen in normal handwriting either  :-\

Thing is, Domtik had no reply to the thread for months and the first reply was only just over 24 hours ago. Hopefully they'll get an email notification ☺️

I too wondered about musical notation shorthand, partly because of the repetitive nature of some strokes. However I couldn't find anything similar when searching.

It could also possibly be a foreign shorthand, although it doesn't appear to have been written quickly. We were taught to write using a pencil with mainly light strokes  and a continual forward motion, whereas this seems heavier strokes and strokes overwritten  ???

It does have a Japanese/Chinese look to it in parts and it seems to me the title could be 'Ikea'  ;) Maybe it's flat pack instructions  ;D

Hope Domtik logs on and gives us some clues  :D

I just stumbled across your post while searching for Shorthand posts. I'm surprised there have been no replies but this script looks very unusual.

I studied Pitman New Era shorthand in the early 80s and can say this isn't it. Nor does it look like any other shorthand/speedwriting system I've seen.

It seems to me it wouldn't be very quick to write as there are multiple repeats of the same stroke, 4 or 5 times. I wondered if it was made up to try and fox someone who was trying to read something private  ::) but is actually just nonsense. Where was it found?

Australia / Re: Junior Red Cross in 1950s at School

I was a junior member and then a cadet of the British Red Cross during the late 60s/early 70s. It was an evening activity and I did it in preference to Brownies/Girl Guides, Girls Brigade or St John Ambulance.

We wore our white school blouses, a black tie with an enamel badge pinned to it, an armband with an embroidered badge on it and our school skirts. Boys also belonged but as I remember it there were mainly girls.

We learnt 'The Kiss of Life and Resuscitation' before it was called CPR on 'ResusciAnne', a dummy. Learnt how what to do in case of an accident, electrocution or drowning and wrapped each other in bandages and learnt how to fit a sling.

One evening after the session my friends and I were waiting for our lift home when a motorcyclist came off his bike and skidded along the road in front of us!😮 Some of us made sure the lad stayed still and stopped the traffic while others ran back to the hall to fetch adults to help him. Luckily he wasn't badly hurt. It was all rather exciting but proved we'd been listening to all the talks we'd been to 😊

I've also just recalled we did a course on Mothercraft and I still have the booklet somewhere 🙂, it certainly helped when I had my own babies years later.

Thanks for the reply Erato, however I'm not sure whether I have any graphics programs!  Would there be any in the Microsoft Office suite?   I've tried opening the photo in Word but can't find a way of annotating the photo.

I know this must sound daft to folk who do this all the time, but it's got me stumped!

The Common Room / Advice on how to annotate group photos please
« on: Thursday 24 November 22 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
I've recently come across my parents' wedding group photo and thought I'd try and produce a key to go alongside noting who the people are (not that I know all of them).

There are about 40 faces and I am trying to work out how best to do this.  I've scanned the photo and printed it out and have considered attaching small numbered adhesive labels but is there an easy to use (preferably free) way of labelling the image electronically?  Eventually I'd like to send copies to cousins who may be able to identify more of the faces.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give  :)
