Wow, that's a great website. Will have to see if it's my family in due course, but thanks for the heads up on the site.
It's certainly an interesting twist, I had no idea I might have traveller blood, it'll be great to find out if it's certain and what it meant for these people's lives  ;D

Would it be worth me going to Ashford to check electoral rolls?

Btw, thanks for all your help. :) I'll upload my evidence to somewhere so I can explain myself a little better.

The birth certificate doesnt say anything, and the questionable marriage cert says John Penfold. But as I say, I'm not sure whether I can take that to be the correct person.

Kent / Pope/Penfold Puzzle
« on: Monday 23 May 11 14:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi Peeps, I have a problem I hope someone can help me with.
My mum's side includes Gosnells, her grandfather being William George Douglas Gosnell, b. 1894. The birth certificate says that his mother was Charlotte Gosnell, nee Pope. Census data for WGDG and his family state that she was born in Sellinge, Kent.

Problem: The only marriage certificate I can find between a George Gosnell and a Charlotte (anywhere, let alone in Ashford) says that her name was Charlotte Penfold (b. ~1857). Plus, the 1881 cencus gives a George, wife Charlotte and daughter Charlotte E Gosnell in Mace cottages, Ashford - next door to a Pope family and a few doors from a Penfold family.
I considered the possibility that she remarried, but I am yet to find a Pope/ Penfold marriage or divorce.

I see that several people on here have researched the Penfold name - does anyone have any idea what could have happened here?! Im mega confuzzled so any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks
:)

Cheers for the links, I can't believe that for all my searching I haven't found them - clearly a beginner!

I doubt that he had lied to such an extent about his age. I know that on censuses he referred to himself as English. Is it likely that his parents would have waited until they returned to England to register the birth - I have found a few births in the family that were declared months after the actual birth? In any case, does a birth in Ireland have to be registered there?

That's incredible!

I phoned a couple of relatives in Sept when i started, and although at first they claimed to know very little, I just asked a few questions and off they went!
It's interesting you say about non blood-relatives, I was thinking this might be a useful approach to finding some stuff out. I know from some of my mates, some people remember whole conversations you had months ago. Hopefully one or two of these gifted people will turn up on investigation!
