Canada Lookup Request / Re: Looking for information on Robert Edward Colby
« on: Friday 07 December 18 19:40 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks all, what a lovely quick response.
It points out some errors in my Aunts original recall that you have highlighted. R E Colby died before 1944 and he was in the Army and not the Navy, so maybe this is not the person she met. She was only about 10 at the time they met and so could have been mistaken. Cheers and thanks once again,
Robert

Canada Lookup Request / Looking for information on Robert Edward Colby
« on: Friday 07 December 18 15:23 GMT (UK)  »
Robert Edward Colby b. 5 April 1871  Believed to have lived in Vancouver in 1918 and buried there. Born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. Believed to have served in the Navy and visited the UK in 1944. Possible alias George Slater but used original name when back in the UK.
Any help would be appreciated as an elderly Aunt (94) requested some information which I am unable to provide. She believes she met him when he came over in 1944.
Thanks
Robert

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Re: Fisher family

Hi Trish,

You do seem to have the extremes of weather, we have had seen a lot of coverage on the tv about fires and then floods. Last year for us on the south coast was just rain or dismal overcast cloudy weather, however, over the last few days it has been lovely and sunny.

Like you I do seem to drift sideways on the family tree but I try and keep to first cousins wherever possible.  My mother's mum was Rita Fisher.

Don't know why the families went to Jersey, but having been there on holiday I can see why it would have been an attractive place to set up home (excluding WWII). I will try and do a bit more research.

Kind regards, Robert

Hi Trish,

I see from your profile that you are located in Melbourne, Australia, which is probably a lot warmer than here in the UK at the moment.

As you have a tree set up, do you have any interest in any of the Fisher family mentioned?  My tree is on Ancestry and titled Fisher/Palmer and includes the people you outlined.

Kind regards, Robert

Hi,

Thank you for your posting.
I also have SH Fisher married to La Belle Wheeler 1904 who then went on to marry Albert Connolly 1918. I believe they had a daughter called Rita and not Ruth in 1905.  In the 1911 census there is a Sidney Fisher (33), married for 6 years to La Belle Fisher (30), and daugter Rita (6) listed as a family living in Portsmouth.  My main interest is Rita Fisher.  If you have any more information on her I would be grateful.

Kind regards, Robert

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: Glover family

Hi,
A quick update.
I did have to trace overseas for the eldest son Aurthur George who enlisted in the Canadian overseas expeditionary force and eventually ended up getting married in Ohio and dying in California.  The marriage record confirmed his name as Violet and his parents as George Violet and mother Grace Pearce.  He married Evelyn Van Deusen.  Nearly there!

Hi,

The good news is that I probably do not have to carry on searching the oversees sites, however, it looks like there seems to be some sort of name change going on that will need some careful understanding and unravelling.  The key is Elizabeth Pearce who probably confirms the link.

Many thanks for the prompt replies saving me a lot of time.

Hi,

Thank you for your kind responses. The background to the Glovers was very fascinating.
I presume emigration is a reasonable option as there appear to be no death records.
The Pearce family was my main research and I managed to find Mary Pearce and the fact that she had married a George Glover through her visitor Elizabeth. I will try Canada first.

Regards,

Robert

Devon Lookup Requests / GLOVER family
« on: Sunday 15 April 12 20:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

George Glover b. 1863 who was married to a Mary Grace Glover b. 1864 (nee Pearce) shows up in 1891 census location Bideford but there appears to be no other references to this family after this date.  Mary has history in the area from birth.  Children Arthur, Charles, Ernest. Any ideas please?
