I am still looking for my grandfathers details. But I think the man you mention was a cousin. I shall need to dig out all my info and get back to you. Not that  we know much about the family . My grandfather may actually have survived the war but you know what the cards are like . My dad never spoke of him much. Thanks for this .I shall see if it fits . k

Woodhall Pits number 1 2 and 3 are in the grounds of Woodhall Policies ,Near Calderbank ,Airdrie. This was a huge and stunningly beautiful estate owned by the Campbells of Shawfield and latterly by others ending with the daughters of Lord Whitelaw. The houses referred to in the info you gave were not the kind of thing we would imagine today .In fact they were transient and built like a camp of tiny rooms of dubious quality .Some were on the edge of the once fine gardens of the Woodhall House which had almost been stripped of the rarest plants in order to provide space  for the miners and their families .The mineral here was the finest Black band Ironstone and in great demand at that time in the nearby Iron and Steel works. The nearby village of Calderbank had rows of a better quality, built on the slopes near the works. These were named.Scottish Row,Irish Row, Welsh Row and English Row. They were rented out ,payment taken from wages to Calderbank miners .After this the remnants of the Woodhall "houses" were swept away. Today this whole area is a sward of green ,the big house gone, the woods regrown. Luckily some rare plants survive from its heyday. A developer wants to bulldoze the lot.I walk there daily remembering the past and worrying about its future .We want to save it  Stop the europark development campaign has a Facebook page and an online petition .The latter will be taken off soon to be handed over to our MP and MSP ...Maybe people would like to sign it while it is still there. SAVE WOODHALL AND FASKINE.

The address was run in the 1940s as a home for unmarried mothers and adoptions were arranged from there.

Thank you all for the leads... :)I had put posts on other places including the one seen by Marc.I always am given little snippets from people but when I  chase them up it is tantalisingly close to grandfather and his family with just a tiny hint of something or someone who does not seem to fit.....but then maybe they do fit and I  just have not put the jigsaw together correctly. :D
Keep right on to the end of the road.

HAPPY HOGMANAY....AND....HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE ;D

Thanks for these Tony. :)
I will check them now. There is a John Daly on the Dungannon memorial but I have no conclusive evidence that it was Luke and Marys son.
Thanks to little ideas from posters likeyourself I  can search other possible links.

Who is the R.I.F archivist?
???

The Royal Irish Fusiliers archivist is Robert Cassells and if you write to him care of the Museum in Armagh he can research members of the regiment for a small fee.

Many thanks for your post. His wife was in hospital as she took a nervous breakdown when he went missing in 1918.Later that year his elder brother Luke junior married and the certificate said parents deceased,so Luke senior and his wife were dead when the medals were claimed in 1923.So far I have found the names of other siblings,Thomas,Mary Jane,Bridget,Ellen but not a Daniel yet.So I would like to find out where he fits in.Thanks for details above..these are the parents of my John Daly, his brother, Luke junior and the others above. :(
