Mayo / Re: Frain Family
« on: Saturday 07 July 18 15:02 BST (UK)  »
To Yllek and Frainj
Apologies for not replying to your posts.  I did not receive notifications due to changing my email shortly after my last post.
I have followed up some of the information I found and the direct lines from my ggrandfather have very few descendants living in Ireland.
John and family (son of John, my grandfathers (Pat) brother and brother to Thomas) live in Dublin but the rest of the family (98 at the last count) live in the Aston/Birmingham area.  I remember as a child my grandfather went to Birmingham for two weeks each year and two weeks to Carrownaraha to visit.
They originally went to England for about six months during winter to obtain work in the building trade and spent the rest of the year on the smallholding. As time went on some of the family took permanent work in England and as the parents and grandparents got older and started to retire they also moved to be near the family.
As to the Doogery and its variants the dwelling was near the N5 the Castlebar to Swinford road at Carrownaraha (a suburb of Ballyvary).  A couple of miles after passing through Ballyvary there is a road on the right hand side of the road that leads to the dwelling.  It is also the road to Doohana (?!).
I have a lot more information if you are still following this line.

Hi Susan
I am not sure when they married.  This is one of the reasons I am trying to find Marys maiden name.  I have a lot of information after William but none going back past William.

I am looking for information on my ggggrandfather.
William Henry Cadman is shown on the 1851 census as being born in Falkirk (Folkirk on census) in 1817.  On the 1871 census he is shown as being born in Glasgow in 1812.  I can find no 1861 census record.  He moved from Scotland to Wolverhampton and married Mary who is shown on one census as being born in 1818 and 1815 on the other.  There is a 50% possibility that Mary may have been nee Blegen.
They had five children, one of which was Thomas - my gggrandfather.
Thomas married Ann Roberts(1839-1910) from Whampton in Staffordshire.  Part of the family including Thomas moved to Castleford in Yorkshire.

I know that Middleton Engine Works was always called Loco - as in the 'Loco Yard.  You are right. It may be true about barracks - but I can't remember anything military.   I should imagine the 'hard times' folks will have gone to Holbeck or Hunslet Workhouse - still open in the 1930s.
This is very interesting and I must search further into my old memories.
There was a Railway Police Barracks I believe.  Could that be what you are looking for ?

Mayo / Re: Michael Tolan possibly from Foxford

Hi heywood
I did look on the Irish census.  There is also a Michael Tolan on the 1881 UK census with his parents from Mayo.  This also fits except that he may have actually been born in England of Irish parents.
The only definite fact I have is his death in the Barnsley area.  I cannot find any other descendants in the area.

I am looking for information on Michael Tolan (b c1880) possibly from Foxford who lived at 7 Hough Lane Wombwell in1950.  7 Hough Lane also seems to be known as Cliff House.  Wombwell is a district of Barnsley in England.
He died on 11th April 1950 aged 70 and was buried in the Catholic section of Wombwell cemetery on the 15th April 1950.
The service was carried out by Father Clancy of Wombwell Catholic Church.
