Carmela, 1000xlch, and ~meg,

Thanks so much for your help :) ... I've been browsing those links. Good ones!  The Ellis Island database appears to only go up to 1924 so no records in there for the year (1930)

Funny how I can find no mention of Margaret Clow and her parents and brother in the Canadian sites. Oh well .. I'll keep on searching ;)

For my own family SMITH search ... my GGG Grandpa is listed in several sources like censuses as England and religeon as Church of England... plus our family has always mentioned that Grandpas side was from England (toss in some local aboriginal and Scotland (mostly Orkneys) along the way) ... Nope ... GGG Grandpa "John James Smith" was from England.  I'll contact the Hudsons Bay Company Archives in Winnipeg and find out what I can about how to get records or something.

Thanks again everyone... :)

Hi MacKenzie

Have you searched for the immigration records into Canada as there are quite a lot online.

Hi ... and thanks a lot for your reply :)

Yes ... I've been trying to find online immigration lists to see if I could find my partners Mom so we could get his grandparents and Uncles' names. Margaret was 8 in 1930 when they arrived in Canada ... we don't know where they arrive TO yet though. I don't give up though.

Hi Ann, I copied and sent your photos to a friend who is a Canadian Military Historian as from what I said he seems to prove the regiments you may think are right, are not possible. He viewed the images and this is his reply.  He also posted an image of the Royal Engineers cap badge, which I'm going to try and save and upload here now... good luck: poop ... I can't remember how to upload ... will try something else...

Hi Karmen;

I still don't know where "R.C.T." came from, but its not that or RASC (Royal Army Service Corps). I'd have to say, that from what I can make out, he served with the Corps of Royal Engineers (RE), judging by the cap badge visible in one photo and the equipment in the other.
Cheers

World War Two / Re: Americans In Leicestershire WW2
« on: Monday 28 March 05 20:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can help. I'm trying to trace my Grandfather who was American. My Grandmother was stationed in The A.T.S. at the Glen Parva barracks in Leicestershire. Could anyone tell me which troops were based in Leicestershire around Dec 1943?
Thanks

Maybe if you post your question here in this military history category you'll get answers as to who was based in that area then.

What info are you trying to find out about your grandfather? Did he make it home from the war? Because if he's a fallen soldier then their are links to sites commemorating and listing fallen soldiers.

Good luck.

Hi,

Hey Ann, I'm so stoked that the lightened picture helps you some more :)

TOM ... and ANN...  regards the cap badge for WW2 time for that regiment,
I placed a request for a picture or link to a picture of the cap badge for that time and regiment.
I'm sure some historian will jump in quickly and I'll get an image one way or another.
I'll post it here as soon as I have one.

I like to help ... because I've been on the receiving end of amazing help from others who
have helped me learn about my own relatives, especially my relatives who served in WW2.

ANN ... I can guess how important this is to you and how you must feel ... family!
Isn't it so wonderful to put family knowledge where questions have always filled an empty place?
I sort of feel that the more we know who we came from, the more we understand ourselves
and our own lives. That continuity gives the rootedness.

If I can help anyone to fill those knowledge gaps then I feel great!

Karmen

I tried to lighten the picture ... posting it here to see if it shows lighter for you here too. It really looks like a badge on his shoulder with some letters on it ...  I dunno. Here's the lightened image though and I hope this works/helps :)

Why don't you get your dad's service records.
They will be available through the public records office, I'm told,
of the National Archives.  His service records will tell you everything
about who he served with, when and where, etc.

My partner says the uniform is definately WW2 Battledress but the
picture is too dark to pick out specifics.

Here is the link for the National Archives:

Good Luck ;)

Why don't you try posting this information in the following forum?
You may even find a descendent or someone who knows the
descendents? Also post in Scottish Military forums? WW1 forums?

http://militaryforums.co.uk/cforums/

(I hope you find some relations who are happy to have this record)

:)

Thanks a lot for your reply Ticker :)

So, it sounds like only heads of households were named in the earlier censuses, like here in Canada. I'll try those links you gave me and get back to you.

Take care and thanks again .. Mackenzie
