And just to wind it up ;D  ;D   So that leaves John...

I think John PENKETH married Mary Ann COMPTON in 1863 and they came south to NZ where at least four children were born.

There were no recorded children born after 1872 and perhaps that is around the time that Mary Ann returned to England as John's obit stated, and she is seen in Lancashire to 1911 with her daughters.

She did not marry again.

1863 arrived Melbourne per Morning Light from Liverpool, born about 1831 (as Walter Penketh) and under the same number 4499 - Alfred Penketh 36y; Hughes family, James 25y, Ann 25y, Eliza infant, John 41y, Ann 15y

Above..From a previous thread.

Alfred was a plasterer born 1828 Salford, Lancashire.
He married Mary WALSH in Salford in 1848 and had a number of children.

He is present on the 1861 England census with wife and family.

It appears he travelled with Walter to Australia on Walter's 1863 return trip, leaving his family behind in Salford.

By the 1871 census he is back with wife and family in Lancashire.

Perhaps a reconnoitre which proved unsuitable for him or not to his liking, or something like that.

The article  does say he sent his wife "home"

I am going to assume that means  England.

That could  suppose mean she was an English woman originally who married John after her immigration.

Or it could mean the marriage took place in England at a time they were both there.

Walter had a brother, younger by 4 years according to English census 1841.

I wonder if this could be him dying in 1897. He had lived in the Mt Ida area and was a miner.
He is referred to as very old and was born in Salford, Lancashire.

An index entry for his New South Wales death certificate gives his father's name as 'James' but I can't afford to purchase the full certificate.

Hi baytree,

It is understandable that purchasing the death certificate is not a possibility for you, but I wanted to make sure that you were aware of the transcription service provided in connection with NSW BMD records. Cost is about $20. Not cheap , but less than the original ' real' certificate.

Scroll almost to the end of the page to see “hire a transcription agent”.
The website of the individual agent you select will give you the "how to"....

In addition to the list of information you may expect to see (below), often you will also find how many years in the colony.

On George's second marriage, he was widowed in 1853 (no exact date) and had three deceased children.

Debra  :)

Three deceased children.

From 1841 , the census sighting with family through to 1850, there does not seem to be a marriage for George GRECIAN.

In 1850 he married Isabella  and there was one recorded birth to the couple with the son's middle name reflecting George GRECIAN's maternal family, HILL (s).

1853 is the year he states he is widowed.

Unless Isabella had his children before their marriage, she needed to have had 3 full term pregnancies by 1853, and all three including George Hills to have died.
