Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Lichfield burial for Acton
« on: Wednesday 12 March 14 22:52 GMT (UK)  »
My information comes from the marriage registration of Francis and Elizabeth. I am descendant from his 1st son Francis Herbert Acton.
That's interesting because my copy of Francis Acton and Elizabeth Brockwell's marriage certificate shows both Francis and his father Thomas were farm labourers.  I shared my info on this family with someone called KerrynLouise who was a descendent of Francis Herbert in 2011.  Perhaps you have it already?

Hi Codep - not sure we have the same people and I have no new info on the Actons of Lichfield.  How are you sure that your Francis Acton's father Thomas was a brickmaker?  If your family is related to the Francis and Elizabeth Acton who arrived in Brisbane in 1862, then we perhaps should compare notes.  Cheers.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: What kind of merchant? from 1851 UK census

Many thanks everyone for your input and for taking to trouble to reference directories etc.  That gives me some more avenues to help sort out these pesky Pardews.  As for the Fish/Silk Merchant - I'm ambivalent - but it does look as though it could be written over.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What kind of merchant? from 1851 UK census

Arthur Pardew is listed in the 1851 census as a (something) merchant in Plymouth, Devon.  In 1861 he is a ship owner.  Would appreciate help in deciphering his occupation in 1851 please.

Many thanks for the new info.  I looked up the two death entries and found (from copies of the original scans) that they are the same event and should actually read page 256 (instead of 255, 257 or 25-).  It appears three transcribers got it wrong or incomplete!  I have submitted corrections to FreeBMD.  Just goes to show it pays to look at the details carefully.  I can probably afford one certificate for a fishing expedition.

Yes, This is the same family.  I am having trouble tracing them back to Lichfield.  My connection is to James Edgar Acton.
We also share the Brockwell family so let me know if you'd like a copy of Elizabeth's family tree.

Thanks BumbleB, that would be wonderful.  I did wonder whether the Workhouse records still existed and how I could access them, so you have anticipated my next question.  I must be getting a bit rusty.  Look forward to hearing from you again.

Many thanks for that JeanLillian - this could well be my gggrandfather and his brother.  Presumably one or both of their parents had died, so you have given me a couple more avenues to search.
