Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Tracing the Buckles From Yorkshire

Paul, Amy Sykes Buckle was the younger sister of John William Buckle, who died in WW1. Have a reasonable amount of information about him if you're interested  :)

The Common Room / Re: Fletcher, just starting
« on: Friday 30 October 20 13:29 GMT (UK)  »
A little update on the Fletcher boys, if you're still looking.
The Middlemore admission book shows that the two boys were taken into the care of Middlemore Homes on 14 April 1910. James birthday was listed as 10 March, and Albert Edward 10 or possibly 11May. Their guardian's address was shown as The Union, Stratford -on-Avon (i.e. the workhouse) Comments -' Mother dead. Father a drunkard in Stratford - on -Avon Union. Children much neglected and ill fed'.
Apologies for the stark language!  It may be worth doing a search of local newspapers for spring 1910, there could well be an article about the family.

Seconding the recommendation for  Patricia Roberts-Pichette's book.
Balsall History Group out on a great exhibition about the Middlemore children last year, and both  Patricia and another Canadian author travelled to give talks.

Looking at the Middlemore Admission book, Lyttleton Wood was admitted there on 28 September 1900. Birthday shown as July.
Guardian shown as Ephraim Wood
Comments somewhat distressing - will send by private message if you want the 'warts and all' version.

In case it's of any help, I've got an image showing William Henry Haycock's admission to Middlemore Homes on 11 January 1907. Birthday shown as 10 December. Guardian William Haycock.
Comments- Father and mother in Birmingham Union.

Further to Christine53's post about BHC records, I have an image showing the admission of George to Middlemore Emigration Home on 16 August 1904 (Sorry I don't have one showing the girls' admissions for that year) His birthday is shown as 11 March, and guardian as George Willis Keatley, so the right boy. Address 2 Burton's Yard, Wade Street.
Image for the comments is blurry, but it does say 'mother an immoral woman. Father gardener. Children under no control. To pay 1/6 per week for 3 years'
Interesting that the parents were to pay for such an extended time - it implies that they had the cash to be able to afford that (Most didn't. Usually when a payment was to be made it was from the Guardians of the Union where the children came from, or by a sponsor of some description)
They sailed on Siberian on 20 June 1905.
If you want to see the settlement records of the two children, they are available at the archives in Birmingham Central Library. (staff extremely helpful)

edited to add: there is also an admission for Arthur Frederick Keatley on 17 October 1906. Birthday shown as 18 December. Father's address remains the same. comments easier to read - 'Mother deserted. Immoral woman. Father gardener. Child under no control.'  Interestingly there is an aside in the next column - 'Given up to father 14/01/07. Mentally weak'  So, Arthur stayed in England with his father....

Canada / Re: British Home Children - Middlemore Children
« on: Thursday 29 October 20 16:33 GMT (UK)  »
Two of my great uncles were emigrated to Canada via Middlemore in 1909 along with 127 other children. Sadly, not very happy stories to report from them. I'm currently researching the lives of all of them. Have been fortunate to make contact with several direct descendants, and have found several happier stories amongst the bad experiences.
Still looking for anyone with a family link to any of the children who sailed on Carthaginian in 1909.

Absolutely - we need to think about how different names might have sounded when spoken to the registrar or census enumerator ;)

Many thanks, Wolves, you're absolutely right - it took me an age to discover. I think the Helm came about as a corruption of Ellam because the couple's accents would be very different to the registrar's! Sorry I didn't post here to say what I'd found, it completely slipped my mind.
We're definitely related through the Ellam line  ;D always god to find a cousin!
