The Common Room / Re: What's your highest number of children born to a couple
« on: Monday 07 March 11 13:38 GMT (UK)  »
What fastinates me is how small the houses were and  how many children lived there.  Where I was born we had a small house that held us four (2 kids 2 parents) and that was OK but I was told Mrs E down the road had 8 children in there. How!   Top n Tail in bed I was told. When one of the eldest was getting married they were so excited as it meant more bed for the rest.

Ambers, got me thinking.

There are directories in Cardiff main Library in central Cardiff dating back many years. I know they list by street but I can't remember if they list by name too?  Its up on the 5th floor, all sorts of local info there.

Does your ancestor have a unusual name? I could have a scan when I'm in there next for the 1925 edition if they have one. Though if its Davies or something I haven't much chance of spotting the right one.

I found it interesting to read who lived in the house I grew up in before my family did.

Mrs T thanks for your post.

Can I add that when I thought we never had that picture my then boss said to me but you have the memories in your head.  So very true.  My mother's parents didn't have a wedding photo but remembered the day well.  They married on boxing day as it saved money as they had left over ham etc. How sensible that is compared with the megabuck weddings that some have now.

But yes if you can get that photo I'd do it while you can. Or if not I'm trying to write happy memories from my childhood and since down to go with the family tree.

Its so lovely to discover family photos you never knew existed.

My parents died young (64 and 58) and we never had a family photo of all four of us, parents and me and my sister. That really upset me. Then my auntie found an old film and got it developed, and there was a photo of us.   To all of you with children, please get a photo of you all so you have it.  It was often the case of either Mum or Dad took the photo so one of them was missing. I'm cheeky and ask strangers can you take one of us when I want a group photo.

Also when we were clearing the house out I found two photos. Took them to my auntie who said they are your great grandparents and told me all about them.  She never knew these photos existed either, was so exciting.

Glamorganshire Resources & Offers / Offer: Cathays Cemetery
« on: Tuesday 01 March 11 13:40 GMT (UK)  »
I live within a few miles of Cathays Cemetery.  If you live far away and would like a photo of your ancestor's headstone I may be able to help.

I do not charge as it costs me nothing extra to get there (bus and I will go when on way to somewhere else, will be a weekend only due to opening hours and work commitments).

I would ask that you first contact the Bereavement Services
Tel: 029 2062 3294
email:thornhillreceptionATcardiff.gov.uk (replace AT with @ )
and ask for the plot number and if there is a stone and let me know.

It would aid me greatly if you could ask for a detailed plot map of that section. It is a huge cemetery. I can't always find the exact plot due to writing on stones erasing over time, ivy covering it, fallen trees etc but will try.

Wellies at the ready.
Tracey

Moderator comment: please start a new thread on Glamorgan Look-up Requests for each enquiry.  Thanks.

Selina, did you get anywhere with this search?  I know it was a while ago.  I live in Cardiff and I'd have a look for you.  Its a huge cemetery so I'd need to know the number of the plot which can be obtained from the bereavement services.  I can take a photo of the stone and email it.

Hi did you find out if it was cathays cemetery? I believe it was called Cardiff cemetery before.  I live in Cardiff I am popping over I can have a look if you like for this grave and send a photo IF I see it - its not always easy to spot as lots without stones.

You could try Cardiff bereavement services on 029 2062 3294. They have graves of cemeteries in Cardiff, they may say to be more specific though but you could try them.
