Hi Lisa

I'm following Charlotte's line down too!  Sarah Ellen born 1870 and, I believe, Charlotte's eldest child was my great grandmother.  Sarah's son George was my dad's dad.  How about you?  Do you have and details of Charlotte's death?  I believe she may have died in 1918 with the death being registered as Bayley rather than Bailey but I've not had chance to confirm this.

I'll let you know if I find out anything on Samuel.

Take care

Helen

Thank you for your information Peter.  I was able to get a copy of the Parish Register entry for Samuel's 1st marriage to Ellen Bostock in Coppenhall.  At the time I couldn't read which Parish Samuel was living in at the time of the marriage - but now you've mentioned Barthomley I can see that's the name of the Parish.

I also managed to get a copy of Samuel's marriage certificate (2nd marriage) but unfortunately, and as I feared, no father's name is recorded.  I guess this is going to be a "brick wall".

Helen

Hi

The Leicestershire Records Office also has some records of memorial inscriptions so they might be worth a try.

Hi Bangladore

I read your post with a fair bit of interest.  One thing that struck me is that, for a small village, there were alot of men from Markfield fighting in the war.

My great-grandfather, Ernest Dowell lived in Main Street Markfield and was killed in action in France, August 1915.  He's buried in a war cemetery in Levantie, France.  He was the village postman before he joined up and left a wife Violet and 4 children - Beatrice (Violet), Doris, Audrey and Bill.

My dad remembers his mum taking him (Doris Dowell) to visit some friends in the Nook, Markfield.

Hi Elzabels

Many thanks for your replies.

The only sources I have for Samuel's place of birth are the census returns for 1841, 1851 and 1861.  Both the 1851 and 1861 returns record his place of birth as being "Crewe".

However, I believe, from IGI index, that he married Ellen Bostock in Coppenhall in 1828.  From what you said, I think this is now what is called Crewe?

Thank you for the information on his marriage to Catherine.  I knew he'd married Catherine but not got any details.  Maybe I'll order a certificate.  It would be just my luck for the father's name not to be recorded!

Once again many thanks for your help.

Hi William

Many thanks for your reply.

Yes, sorry my mistake - Samuel died in 1862.  It was Ellen Bostock his first wife who died in 1855.  I had been able to trace through his later life but just not able to find a baptism or identify his parents.

Many thanks for your reply William.

I posted it on both boards as I knew that Samuel had lived in both counties and I wasn't completely sure which county Crewe was in back then.
