Thanks heaps Justin.

Unfortunately I was only sent the said baptism which is only 4 lines in length and nothing else so I don't have other records on the page to compare writing with.

I have attached the record which may help.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with 1730 German Baptism

Hi Rootchatters,

I have a 1730 German baptism which I have tried to translate to see if it relates to my family, however there are a few words that I need help with.

The first image are the words that come after the father's name.
Going by past documents I think it may be the father's profession and religion.  I thought the first word may have been "Engloherr" (Englishman?) but this doesn't seem right as the surname is German - perhaps he was an English man from German decent? The next two words in brackets I cannot work out.

The second image is the mother's maiden name which I cannot read.  The first word in the brackets looks like it may be "Lutherian''. The third word is the same as the second word in the brackets in the first image.

The third image gives the name of the witness/godparent.  It looks like his first name is Peter but I can't work out his surname.  His profession is a soldier if that may help with the profession of the father.

Thanks for any help in advance.  :)

Technical Help / Re: Windows 10 / photoshop elements 10
« on: Monday 07 March 16 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
My laptop was causing problems but usable at the moment so I wasn't game to accept the free Windows 10 upgrade offer incase a major catastrophe happened and I had no computer at all. I bit the bullet and bought a new laptop yesterday with Windows 10 so started fresh.
Today I started installing the programs I occasionally use and have found my Corel programs don't work and there are hiccups with Elements 10. Don't use them enough to justify buying new versions so will be looking for free programs later.
Office is ok only because I have purchased the latest version for home and work.
Haven't started to install my family history programs yet but not holding my breath.
Just glad I have my old laptop to fall back on at the moment..
Reserving my opinion on Windows 10 as I have just begun using it. At the moment I just have a glorified word processor.

Hi again,

That letter also stumped me.  Thought at first it was a G but didn't seem to fit with the other letters (ie gotel) but it also looked like a lower case h.

English is my only language so working out old German while doing family history has been a challenge and Rootschat has been very helpful. I have had help from wonderful people much more experienced than me on this forum.
Family Search has good resources and I also use "If I Can You Can Decipher Germanic Records" by Edna M Bentz and "German English Genealogical Dictionary" by Ernest Thode.

Good luck with your research

Hi MaxD

Have had a go at the last column.

Suggestion only          Berlin, Hotel Viktoria      :-\

Could be completely wrong. Just trying to compare letters of the words with resources I have. There is a Hotel Victoria in Berlin (dates correspond with your document).

Hi MaxD,

Noticed that you haven't received any help so I thought I would try.

I'm no expert but have researched German records for my own family tree.

Here are my thoughts:

Box 1 Johann Otto Schober
Box 2 Zollner (customs official)
Box 4 Wien (Vienna) St Elisabeth  :-\

The reason I say "Elisabeth" is that it looks like "Elisabeth" from my family documents. (the capital E looks funny as do many old German letters)

There is a St Elisabeth in Wien which is a hospital established in 1709
www.elisabethinen-wien.at/
If the link doesn't work just Google St Elisabeth Wien.
