Shropshire / Church of St. John The Evangelist, Lawley. Removal of headstones.
« on: Friday 05 January 18 13:41 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me when headstones were cleared from the churchyard at St. John's in Lawley? I'm specifically interested in the one for H.J. Mason.

I know that a memorial stone for him was subsequently erected in Shrewsbury Cemetery and a new headstone was erected at St. John's by the CWGC in November 2015, but I'd like to know when his original stone was removed.

Many thanks.

Dear Doris.

Many thanks for your message.

Your Jonah Peaceful is the son of Jonah Peaceful (b. 1875, d. 1939) and Ada Griffiths (b. 1874, d. 1949).

Jonah Peaceful senior was one of my grandmotherís (Elizabeth Louisa Peaceful) brothers so that would make him my great uncle.

Iíve currently got details of two of young Jonahís siblings (although there may be more). He had two sisters, Florence May Peaceful (b. 1900) and Ada Louisa Peaceful (b. 1903).

If you have any more information Iíd be delighted to hear it.

Iíve been having a quick look at some of your posts on RootsChat and the name Ferraday rang a bell with me. My mother knew an Ida Ferraday whose father had the chemist shop in Oakengates. I think Ida or her father (or possibly both) might be buried in Wombridge churchyard. Please let me know if you think that there is a connection. I shall be in that area over Christmas (my mother is also buried there) and if I can find a headstone Iíll take a photograph for you.

Thank you so much for contacting me.

Kind regards

Paula.

Thanks Cas.

Anne Stanworth Healey was Sarah's mother.

Aldred certainly looks like a possibilty. I've found a William Henry Aldred, born Madeley 1891 (which makes him roughly the same age as Harry and Sarah - he may have been the Best Man).

I've been advised to post this on here in the hope that someone might be able to help me.

I'm trying to decipher the parish record for the marriage of Harry Mason to Sarah Anne Elizabeth Healey on 5th August 1916 at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Ketley, Shropshire.

I can make out three of the four witnesses, Thomas Healey, Georgina Eleanor Harris Healey and Anne Stanworth Healey. I can't make out the fourth witness, William Henry ?????? and I can't read the vicar's name (it looks like T. Lawrie ????????).

Can anyone help please.

Many thanks.

Thanks Mike.

Yes, they were living in Derby. He was a bank clerk and she was a teacher. They also spent time in Leominster and Rugby. During WW1 he was in the RFC / RAF.

Hi Ladyhawk.

Many thanks for your reply.

I've attached another photograph which shows Sarah on the right and she doesn't appear on the first picture. There is a possibility that one of the ladies might be Gladys Weatherby, Reynold's sister, but I've no way of confirming this.
