Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: Sarah Cresswell/Ann Coppins/Richard Coppins
« on: Sunday 11 October 20 01:39 BST (UK)  »
Just for the record.

Sarah COPPINS was born 7 Jul 1831 at St Pancras Middlesex England, daughter of Richard & Sarah COPPINS nee SUTER.
She married George ASHWOOD on 26 Mar 1852 at St Marylebone Middlesex, and emigrated to Australia in 1852-3.

Richard COPPINS and Sarah SUTER were married on 21 Dec 1817 at Southampton Hampshire.

Richard COPPINS was baptised 29 Jan 1797 at Lenham Kent, son of Arthur Britcher and Ann COPPINS nee HOW (formerly LOUDER).  Richard died 22 Apr 1884 at Altmar Oswego New York USA.  Richard was a tailor, and as far as I know, he was NOT in the army, but the family did spend some time in Ireland.  Richard left England about 1838-39, and remarried in America in 1850.

Sarah SUTER was baptised 2 Nov 1794 at Minstead Hampshire, daughter of John and Mary SUTER nee HOLMAN.  Sarah died 10 Sep 1871 at St Pancras Middlesex.  Sarah's sister, Ann SUTER (incorrectly listed as Ann COPPINS in the 1871 Census), was baptised 29 Nov 1801 at Minstead, and died 1 Jun 1872 at St Pancras, and never married.

The surname CRESWELL is associated with the COPPINS family - Richard's sister Harriet married John CRESWELL in 1820 at Chatham Kent, and Richard and Sarah's daughter Mary COPPINS, married Frederick CRESWELL (John's son) in 1852 at St Pancras, and Jane FRANKLIN, widow of Richard and Sarah's son William Henry COPPINS, married John CRESWELL, son of John and brother of Frederick.

The mixup of the surname CRESWELL occurred about 40 years ago when my father and I made a mistake in our research, but that mistake has been handed on and on many times, even though we corrected our mistake about 35 years ago, the mistake still persists and is passed around among "researchers".

thank you

Hi Philippa - I sure am still looking for him.  I have found a little more about him since my last post, but the death I found in Rhodesia was not him.  I have found a few of his works by googling, but would love to know more of your watercolour. Helen

South Africa / James McCulloch ROBERTSON (landscape artist)

Hello All

My name is Helen and I am new to RootsChat, but I though I would try posting this and see if I get any "nibbles".

I am researching a g.g.g.g. uncle, James McCulloch ROBERTSON, who was born at St Davids, Dalgety, Fife, Scotland on 28 Apr 1869 the son of William & Jane Robertson nee AITKEN.  James died at Salisbury Rhodesia on 16 Mar 1938 (I got this from the National Probate Register in England).  I think he went under the name of McCulloch Robertson.  His first wife was Margaret Brown WELLWOOD, but I don't think she ever went to South Africa.  Another wife was Adelaide Mary Robertson, but I know nothing about her.

Does anyone know anything further of James McCulloch Robertson?

regards, Helen (Newcastle, NSW, Australia)

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: DICK family, "Edendale" Auckland c1907?
« on: Tuesday 03 May 11 11:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi Alan, thank you so much for posting the photos.  They are great.  Robert DICK married Helen GAFF, who was the sister of my husband's g.g. grandmother, Margaret Gaff who married Alexander GILLESPIE.  Robert & Helen emigrated to New Zealand, and then their son William Robert Dick married Margaret & Alexander Gillespie's daughter Mary.  William & Mary moved to Australia and both died here in NSW in 1962.  One of the photos mentions McINDOE, but the only McIndoe connection that I know of is Mary Gillespie's sister, Jessie Bryson Gillespie, who married John Charles Stuart MacIndoe, and as far as I know, the family stayed in Scotland.  I know of only three children of Robert & Helen Dick, Christina Masterton, William Robert and John Charles Gaff, but I was told that had at least one other son.  I would love to know more about the photos.  Thank you again, Helen.
