Hi Maureen - Yes!!! I'd love a copy of the photo - I just got back from 3wks holiday so am just catching up with my messages etc, hence me not replying until now! My e-mail address is as follows-
(*)

Thankyou so much for your trouble in doing this - it will be a thrilling addition to the FH book! I hope it will cheer them up a bit because the husband looks like he will be hospitalised over Christmas - perhaps having the book to read will take their mind off things a little!
Many thanks again,
Linsey

Thanks for your help - I had discovered the book, but would have to order a copy from another (out of area) library, and my library got ever so confused with the last request - even though it is easy to sort out!

Hertfordshire / STURMAN-Kings Langley(Red Lion Pub, Waterside)
« on: Wednesday 18 November 09 12:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching this family for a friend's tree (Xmas present!). George STURMAN was the landlord of the Red Lion pub on Waterside between c1855 and  1871 according to census returns and trade directories. Has anyone a) got a picture of the pub I could use in my presentation?
and b) any links to the family- I have George's parents as Thomas STURMAN and Sarah UNDERWOOD, m 1788 St Albans.

I have Charles and Rosina's marriage certificate, father listed as Salesman, but not deceased, The couple give the address as Kingsland Road, Parish of St Leonard Shoreditch. As for George, I suppose it is possible for his father to be different, but I would have to order the BC to find out for certain. I have the will of Charles TC Clarke - short and sweet, just leaves everything to Rosina - no clues as to any other relatives from that!
Charles was apprenticed to a Watchmaker/Jeweller in Mitcham, Surrey, where he appears in 1861 aged 16. Quite possibly the family were 'on the slide' at this point, and so Charles had to find himself a trade. Rosina was a watchmaker's daughter, and herself carried on Charles' business for a time after his death.
Had little success finding George after 1861, but I did find a Susan Clark, widow, aged 59 lodging in 15 Henrietta St, Marylebone in 1871. Frustratingly, her place of birth is given as that well-known town, 'Not Known'!!
Deaths possible for Henry searched between Sep 1867 and Dec 1871 include:
Dec 67 Pancras, aged 62
Dec 68 Croydon aged 55
Mar 70 Pancras aged 79
Jun 70 Marylebone aged 71
That's assuming he died in either London, Middlesex or Surrey - if he was a salesman and travelled, he could have popped off anywhere!
You see my dilemma - too many options, and if they moved around in London, how do you nail them down?!
Any more suggestons and scenarios are welcome!!
Linsey

I did find this entry before on Ancestry, but I'm unsure whether a 'coffee house keeper' would be considered to be a 'Gentleman' as Henry stated on his marriage cert of 1840 and that of his son's BC in 1844.
I also found a reference to a Henry who was a cook with a wife Susan in Shoreditch, and another in Westminster, as Wm Henry and Susannah Clarke but they were listed as being b Ireland. Nothing seems to fit very well.
I then checked under Henry's father's name in case they were visiting and did the same with Susannah's father.
There is a Charles Clarke aged 50 on the census for Bloomsbury in 1841 listed as Independent - who seems to be part of the household of 53 Upper Barton St, presumed head is Nathaniel Clarke, barrister also aged 50. There is also a family in Clerkenwell, Charles Clarke 65, Ind.
A Thomas Colbourne aged 59, Ind, appears in Barbican area with wife Jane 58.

In 1851 and 1861 I found a Henry Clark, gentleman listed in Calne, Wiltshire as a brother in law, married, born in Surrey.
In 1861 Susannah is listed at 12 Portsea Place, Paddington, with youngest son George, she is listed as a Lodging house keeper aged 50 (she was b 1811)
Either Henry died after the birth of George in 1849, or they lived apart or split up, or perhaps Henry had some regular business elsewhere at that particular time of year and so doesn't appear with his family.

London and Middlesex / CLARK/E and COLBOURNE family London c1840

Searching for a CLARK/E family in London, namely Henry and wife Susannah. They married 30/9/1840 in St Bride, Fleet Street, and gave their place of residence as Paul St, Finsbury. Henry was son of Charles, Gentleman, and Susannah, nee COLBOURNE was daughter of Thomas, also a Gentleman. I have 2 sons- Charles Thomas Colbourne CLARKE, b 1844 at 50 , Commercial Road, Lambeth, and George b 1849. I have checked these addresses and areas on census returns, yet can find no trace of any Henry who fits the bill. Susannah and the 2 sons were resident at 3 London St, Paddington in 1851 - she is not described as a widow, but I cannot find any record which really pinpoints her and her husband after that. There are so many deaths under the name, so finding it hard to get a handle on their birth/death dates. Hoping someone can help, has them in their tree or knows where to look next!

I have an Edwin Butterfield which would match yours! Born in Belle Isle (Wakefield)  in 1868 he was the son of my 3x gt grandparents John Butterfield and Ann Dennison, one of 10 known children born to the couple. I am descended form Henry, the eldest child born 1863 and have a bit of info on the Butterfield and Dennison families further back. If you'd like more info drop me a line!
