London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Clayhouse yard, ?White Cross street.
« on: Tuesday 23 November 10 09:39 GMT (UK)  »
Yes, Valda,

Schools & Institutions are generally shown at the end of the Street Index but on the 1851 they are shown within the list of streets under Schools.

I did check the end of the Streets index & also the list of Schools but still no School for the Homeless was shown.

PLayhouse Yard is also shown under the City of London 1851 census as Playhouse Yard, Water Lane,
HO107/1258  folios 78-79.
Whitecross Street is also within this piece no.. I checked the Street Index but there is no School for the Homeless shown either at the end of the list or under Schools.

Perhaps an enquiry would help at the Guildhall Library for the City of London Playhouse Yard, I am not too sure whether the St Luke one would come under the London Metrpolitan Archives or the Guildhall.

Hello,Eillen,

I have checked White Cross Street in the 1851 census & cannot find a Clayhouse Yard but there is a Playhouse Yard,  probably a mistranscrirption somewhere.

1851 census
Playhouse Yard  White Cross Street St Luke
HO105/1522  folios 175-180
                                145-150

I checked thro' these folios but could not identify a school for the homeless, the occupants all seemed to be general workers & traders.

Hope this helps,

London and Middlesex / Re: history of a address
« on: Saturday 20 November 10 12:30 GMT (UK)  »
The best way to do this is to consult the local Electral Rolls for the address.

They are held at the main record Office for the District, i.e Greater London would be the London Metropolian Archives.  With in the counties they would be at the main Record Office of the County Town. You may be lucky & find the local main Library has them, worth an enquiry.  I live near London & had an address in Keigthley nr Bradford, Yorks,  that I was interested in c 1960s, 'phoned the main library who were most helpful in providing the info I needed.

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Cullen College Perranport

This can now be closed, with thanks, as I have found that the college in question was the Culham College near Oxford, it had been entered phonetically on the 1911 census.

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Cullen College Perranport

I would be most grateful for some help with finding any information about Cullen College, Perranporth, Cornwall

The Newell family, part of my matermal line, all lived in & around he Bermondsey area of London.  Imagine my surprise when I found the mother, Bessie Newell together with her unmarried sister Laura Harriet Minchin, & her son Harold William Newell, according to the 1911 census, living in Perrenporth, Cornwall.  None of the Newell family had any connection with Cornwall.

Harold William, born Mar ¼ 1888 Hackney,  is stated to be 23 years of age & a "student Cullen College"

I have tried various sites on the internet for info, with no success beyond finding there is or was a College Road in Perranporth so I would welcome any info as to just what this college offered.

Many thanks,

Meliora

London and Middlesex / Re: St Giles With Cripple Gate Census 1841-1851
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 14:34 BST (UK)  »
Have now checked the 1841 census..

1841 census
HO107/727   book 3   folios,  4, 8, 12-13, 17-18

Unfortunately,  no-one by the name of Cook or Jones found

It is possible the neither the Cook or Jones familes were actually living in Moor Lane but was simply an "address of convenience"  I have come across this myslf in my own research, strangly enough, with two marriages at St Giles Cripplegate.   St Giles is actually within the Barbican area of the City of London, my two families were living at the north end of Goswell road, part of which is Clerkenwell & part Islington.  Today the St Giles church which was rebuilt when the Barbican area was redeveloped is close to Aldersgate Street a coninutation of which to the north is Goswell Road.  My families gave the name of a road quite close to St Giles but were certainly not living there as I have them on census in Goswell Road, why they should have wished to be married at St Giles I don't know, it may have been something to do with the banns being called for 3 weeks before the wedding. If the had given their correst address, the banns would have to have been called at two churches.

Something I did notice on the marriage of Thomas Cook to Mary Ann Jones was that it took place on Christmas Day.   Many marriages were arranged for that day if any one if the family worked in a shop as it was sometimes the only day they were sure of having free,  & Thomas' father was a butcher perhaps in a shop..

I have checked the 1851 census for Moor Lane St Giles Cripplegate.  This comes under the City of London in piece no HO107/1525 scattered thro' various folios, 72-78,79-81,84, 85-87,90-91, 91-92.

No-one by the name of Cook or Jones found.

The only other census info found was.

Thomas Cook   head  age 51  Stone Mason b Whitechapel
Mary ann  wife  ahe 48    b  St George in the East.
