Australia Lookups completed / Australian Electoral Rolls???

Hi All
This may seem like a very odd question, but do they hang onto the old electoral rolls? And if so how do you get a look at the ones from the mid 1950s?
I am hoping to trace some of my dad's family this way. As he was fostered at a very young age he doesn't remember much about his family, but somehow he has managed to remember what his address was when he was 5 or 6 yrs old and that his nana with the broad scottish accent lived with them.
I am hoping that if I have her name then I will possibly be able to use that in addition to my errant grandfathers name to work out when he was born, my vanished grandmother was very good at lying on her childern's birth certificates... multiple names, parental ages, number of kids etc! Having his real age means I might actually be able to work out where he was born, whether he and my grandmother were married, when he and his family arrived in Australia, or if he was actually born in Australia... Oh My head hurts!!!!
Alternatively if you have a less confusing, smaller headache causing way of working these things out PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know...
Dad and I have already contacted Australian welfare to chase up dad's care record, but I am unsure how long that will take and how much help it will be, given the number of conflicting dates, places and ages we already have.
On the plus side mum's family is causing me far less grief....
Anna
