Australia / british military innsw 1840-1850
« on: Sunday 12 January 14 06:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All, I am trying to find resourses for the british army that were stationed in NSW for the above years.Story has it that a John Flood born in Dublin ran away and tried to join the British army was found and returned to his family, on his second time changed his name , story again to Cahill. He is said to of fought in the wars of Watangi in NZ, then to Aust and was a guard on Pinchgut. He was not listed as still being in the army in 1852 when he married. Any help to point me in the right direction would be a great help.
 Cheers Natalie

Hi JM,
Yes I have searched some of the arrivals, but not extensively, years 1847-47 are missing, so will
troll other sites.
The informant for his death in 1886 was his son John Flood. who was a second dealer in Forbes.
Have followed the places where all his children were born.
James b 1853 Sydney,Catherine b 1854 Sydney d 1854 Parramatta,Mary b 1856 Syndey,Annie b 1863 ?John b 1866 Carcoar,Margaret b 1869 ?, Elizabeth b 1872 Grenfell d1872 Bushmans Lead District of Forbes.
As yet have not been able to find anything about him in these areas.
Thanks for your interest in my research
Regards Natalie

Hi Majm,
Yes it is. I have been down to NLA, viewed the fiche of their marriage cert, nothing extra noted.
The ones that you mentioned are not my line at all.
Death cert states buried in the Catholic section Forbes Cemetery. Have been to F/H Forbes he is in an unmarked grave along with his wife Mary Ann.
Any suggestions where else I might venture for research?
Thanks Natalie :(

Thankyou Ed,
Yes these are the ones that I am trying to connect together.
They may or not connected at all, but I am trying to eliminate the ones that don't.
Ellen also married a James Byrne in 1830/31 as Charles Williams died. She married Bryne in Sydney.
Trying to see if there is a connection to John and Martin, and if these two boys where children that she left behind in Ireland. Maybe they were related somewhere along the line if not brothers, for John to witness the marriage of Martin, or maybe it was Mary Ann and Bridget that were sisters as both came out on the Lady Peel as famine orphans in 1849 ? Who knows.
Thankyou for your interest in this research

 Hi Shane,
I don't know if there is a connection to Ellen and the 2 boys as I am trying to see if there is a possiblity that there may be ,by the process of elimination.
Seems strange that her children were not sent out with her when she was transported as in other cases if they were very young.
I only have what is listed here in NSW to go on, so it is very limited as to know what records are back in Ireland.
Natalie.

Thanks Shane,
I don't know any more than what I noted about Ellen Flood.
Is there anywhere that I can check her trial in Dublin? that may give me some clues as to other family members.
