The Common Room / Re: Free Access to Ancestry Canada until 16th March

Whoops! Corrected. I had just reached November in some records I'm working on and had that month on my brain. It's lucky I didn't also say 1993!

The Common Room / Free Access to Ancestry Canada until 16th March
« on: Tuesday 12 March 24 17:41 GMT (UK)  »
https://www.ancestry.ca/c/canada-free-access?
Ends 12:59 pm ET, which I make to be 3:59 am GMT on Sunday 17th.

I was able to sign in at the above .ca URL with an Ancestry UK account. Not all collections were marked as FREE, e.g. I couldn't access some of the censuses, but my browser counted 489 FREEs, which should be enough to keep most people quiet. Creating an Ancestry Canada account (free, but I needed a different e-mail address) only gave one more.

As always with free periods, save anything of interest on your own device, as you'll need a sub to see it online after the offer closes.

The Common Room / Re: Engaged or Good friends

Hi,
The name of the giver was Jessie Curtis not Smith.  Married as Jessie Curtis = Stanley Bungay. Plaitford School where she had worked presented her with a silver tea service.
If she was a teacher and that was a council school, then she would not have been allowed to stay in her career once married. I have come across a number of instances relating to this rule in our local eduation committee records. It probably applied to other professionals too.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: Grave marker and fallen stone
« on: Wednesday 21 February 24 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
Most cemeteries nowadays require all work to be done by one of their approved monumental masons, so you should contact the office to discuss whatever you have in mind. Even the wording of the inscription usually has to be approved.

Before you begin, you need to know who owns the plot (or the lease to burial rights in it), and there may be fees to pay to transfer it to you if necessary. There will originally have been a property deed, which should have been passed on through the normal inheritance process, though often they are lost over time. Again, the office may be able to tell you where to start.

Caveat: Procedures vary, and I know nothing of Scottish law. Some cemeteries, however, take a pragmatic approach and are quite happy for just about anyone to take responsibility for repairing a grave monument as long as it's done properly.

Census Lookup and Resource Offers / Re: Free Access Newspapers.com

Thanks dbree, you pipped me to the post, but I'll just add (a) that it ends 12:59pm MT, which I make to be 6:59am on Tuesday 20th and (b) the usual warning for free periods to save anything of interest on your own device, as you'll need a sub to see it after the offer closes.

Also, just about to end (sorry, I got diverted and failed to post it sooner)

Free Access to MyHeritage worldwide marriage and divorce records until 17th. No time specified and that could mean the start or end of Saturday (probably also MT), i.e. 6:59 am Saturday or Sunday.

At a quick glance, the records available appear to be rather selective, so don't expect to find everybody, or much more than's on FreeBMD at all times.

Roxburghshire / Re: Graveyards in Castleton & Newcastleton Rox. with Croziers
« on: Monday 05 February 24 19:37 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry, I can't provide any enlightenment, but to add another clue in the hope that someone else can, there is currently an In Memoriam card on eBay for Isabella Nichol, died 12-Mar-1917 age 65, wife of Matthew Nichol. It says she died at 24 North Hermitage Street, Newcastleton, and was interred on 16th March 1917 at Castleton Churchyard: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275662793328
I can't find her or Robert Crozier on Find a Grave or billiongraves.

There would hae been increased need for ceramic insulating components for electrical and electronic equipment -- both "more of the same" for things produced pre-war, and new shapes for inventions like radar.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Electoral registers on FindMyPast
« on: Monday 11 December 23 16:42 GMT (UK)  »
I've seen young voters coming of age during the year flagged on the printed registers with their birthday. (It might have been a separate list or Y flag in earlier years.) I don't know if they still do that, or whether it appears on the online registers on FindMyPast or 192 -- perhaps someone can look up someone they know. And maybe 192 know when you reach 76 and are no longer eligible for jury service. But how they would track people through changes of address, let alone name, I can't imagine.
