Hello Marie..I will contact you!

Best regards, Nora

Hello Marie..it is wonderful to connect with you. I am from the Conception Bay Center area which involves your research. Over the years I have seen the names you mention in your family - GUSHUE & SULLIVAN - as I pursue my own family research.

Since posting my message regarding my maternal GrGrandmother, Bridget (b. 1860, GUSHUE) who married my GrGrandfather, David Whelan of Colliers. I do not have specific info about her parents/my 2xGrGrandparents. The closest connection I could find to a couple havinf children in this time frame with a Bridget baptised in 1860 to - Timothy & Catherine (Phelan/Whelan) GUSHUE of Cats Cove/Conception Harbour in Conception Bay..the baptism took place at Sts Peter & Paul RC Church in Harbour Main..there were also at least two other children baptised between 1859 - 1862.

Next, I found a couple with the same names - Timothy & Catherine (Whelan) GUSHUE located in Bonavista Bay. Not unusual, as I believe he was a fisherman as were many in his family. I found a marriage record in 1858 for - Timothy GUSHUE, born abt. 1833 at Cats Cove, Conc. Bay and Catherine (Whelan, b. abt. 1838, Indian Arm, Bonavista Bay)..having more children between 1864 -  1879.

I believe this is the same couple as parents to my maternal GrGrandmother, Bridget (GUSHUE, b. 1860) WHELAN.

Marie, if you are interested, we can exchange emails as I do have extensive research done on the GUSHUE surname.

Best regards, Nora

Hello..I'm also researching/searching the GUSHUE name..I'm from Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. My maternal GrGrandmother's maiden name is GUSHUE, b. abt. 1860 and baptism recorded in the Harbour Main District of Conception Bay, NL. (old spelling/name reference to the province was, Newfoundland)..I recently found the marriage record for my 2xGrGrandparents in the Archives at The Rooms in St. John's, NL...I'm also wondering just where did the original GUSHUE ancestors immigrate from?? The name spelling has taken on many spellings in various records - Gosue; Goodshoe; Goodshou; Guizot; etc..there is a headstone found in an old cemetery in Harbour Main for a John "Gosue" with his wife, Rachel and son, John for early 1800's..Dr. Gushue, you state that you found "The alpha Gushue I have discovered is one Timothy Gushue, who was born in Jersey around 1702 am migrated to Newfoundland to take up permanent residence in the Bacon Cove area somewhere around 1720" - what is your source(s)?..I've been searching for over 7 years and have been in contact with another searcher (with over 40+ years searching)..we've never seen any records, lists, details regarding a Timothy Gushue 1702 time period..he can trace his Gushue genealogy back to a John Gushue in the late 1700's to Bacon Cove...I'd appreciate sharing info with you, regards, Nora.

Hello to Kovel and again thank you..It's been several months since I've been in contact and just wanted to update as to my search - I do have the details you shared with me regarding the baptism of son, John in 1817 to parents, John & Sarah Phillips residents of Colliers (my hometown)..the baptism took place in Harbour Grace, approximately 40 kilometers from their community...I've yet to make an actual connection to my family but my "gut" tells me most definitely..I do know my paternal Grandfather's name is, John Thomas b. 1881 and his father/my GrGrandfather's name is John Patrick, b. 1852..I haven't been able to get back any further with this family..there were two other children/sons baptized at Harbour Grace to John & Sarah Phillips - William Brazill b. 1814/bapt. 1820 and Job b. 1824/bapt. 1825..I found these records online but also records held at the Archives located at The Rooms in St. John's, NL...as for my GrGrandmother, Ellen (McGrath) Phillips b. abt. 1851, I haven't found any details as to her family in Colliers..there are several families in Colliers and the smaller communities/towns within the area..thank you..Regards, Nora.

Polarbear?? Wow, that was quick, thank you! While I wasn't 100% sure of the details I've been finding or was sent by someone else, I've just recently found the following:

> GGrandparents Marriage Record: John *PHILIPS & Ellen MCGRATH, Colliers, Newfoundland date: November 27, 1878; Witnesses: Patrick Grace & Bridget Shea found in Marriage Records (1857 - 1906) R. C. Parish St. Peter & St. Paul, Harbour Main, Newfoundland. {*Note: Although the last name spelled here is P H I L I P S, we spell our family name as P H I L L I P S}.

>> Grandfather's Baptism Record: John Thomas PHILlIPPS; Parents Name(s): John PHILLIPS & Ellen (MCGRATH); Residence: Colliers; Date of Baptism: 20 Oct 1881.

>> In a 1921 Census for this area/district I found both my GGrandparents, John PHILIPS (Birth-1852/Feb.) & Ellen (Birth-1851/March) with my Grandparents, John PHILIPS (Birth-1881/Oct.) & Margaret (Birth-1882/Feb.) with 8 of their then born children - my Father, Michael Cyril, was born in October 1922.

**I DO NOT have Birth or other details on my GGrandparents John PHILIPS(PHILLIPS) or Ellen MCGRATH. However, I have found other names that may be related: Edward PHILIPS (Birth-1854) and Thomas PHILIPS (Birth-1861).

***Also other names in Baptism Records for: Margaret Elizabeth PHILIPS d/o John PHILIPS & Margaret Grace; Date: 25 Aug 1861; Juliann PHILIPS d/o George PHILIPS & Catherine Kinsella; Date: 09 Feb 1862; William PHILIPS s/o John PHILIPS & Margaret Grace; Date: 26 Oct 1862; Susanna PHILIPS d /o George PHILIPS & Cahterine Kinsella; Date: 04 Aug 1863; Elizabeth d/o George PHILIPS & Kate/Catherine Kinsella; Date: 14 Dec 1864; and Thomas Joseph PHILIPS s/o John PHILIPS & Margaret Grace.

Would you know, or could possibly find, any details of the names & if/how related?? I have no other details regarding my GGrandfather John PHILIPS/PHILLIPS, i.e. where he came from, either emigrating from England or moved from other area of Newfoundland???

Again, thank you so very much for your help!!

Kindest Regards,

Nora Phillips :)

Hi, I'm researching my PHILLIPS family ancestry and not having much luck! This is my first time on this site for my research. >>>My GGrandfather John PHILLIPS - DOB:  February ?, 1851(2); DOD: ????; married *Ellen (McGRATH) PHILLIPS; her DOB: March ?, 1850(1). {*I'm not positive regarding my GGrandmother's birth details but was told she was from Colliers, Newfoundland but was born in Scotland 1850}.

>> GGrandparents John & Ellen PHILLIPS children listed as: William DOB: 1878/DOD: ????; James A. DOB: 1880/DOD ???? and *John DOB: 1881/DOD: 1968 @ Colliers, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada.

**I did find the following at the England & Wales Census, 1881.....

Kindest regards,
Nora :)
