May,

I would try the "Ask a librarian service" at the library http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/services/ask/index.html  They may be able to help.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Re: Yardley BOWMAN Suffolk 1754

Family search lists

Name:    Yardly Boman
Gender:    Male
Christening Date:    25 Jan 1731
Christening Place:    SAINT JAMES,BURY SAINT EDMUNDS,SUFFOLK,ENGLAND
Mother's Name:    Frances Boman

I know it says male but I don't think the sex of the child was listed at this time in the registers so may be a guess by the transcriber.

Wicklow / Re: Doyles of Wicklow, Avoca

Thanks for all your help and suggestions Tara.  I had tried some name variations but there seem to be be lot more than I though, I will keep searching.  My dream at the moment is to go to Ireland and check the Avoca registers myself for more details but unfortunately that is not happening any time soon.

Mary Ann eventually settled in Cranbourne, Victoria.  She is buried in the local cemtery there.  Margaret and Elizabeth settled in the suburbs around Melbourne and are buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery.

Wicklow / Re: Doyles of Wicklow, Avoca

The occupation I gave also match the area were a Matthew and Mary DOYLE settled in South Australia (Wallaroo) which shortly after they arrived discovered copper.

I have concentrated solely on the three girls I know about but I keep being drawn to South Australia.  Mary Ann DOYLE wrote a memorium in the newspaper 5 years after her death which was to be copied to the newspaper in Adelaide, but at this time all her know family were in Victoria not South Australia,  so I have assumed she must have other family there that I don’t know about.  The passenger list of the General Hewitt in 1858 indicates the family came from Wicklow and rootsireland has the chlidren’s baptisms in Avoca , the same place I have on the BMD certificates I have for the older girls.  Margaret Doyle first marriage also occurred in Adelaide, South Australia.
More coincidences without proof it’s getting frustrating.

I have attached partial copies of the BMD certificates I have the show the parents names (Matthew and Mary) however Death certificate information depends solely on the informant knowing the correct information.  Also, Mary Ann spelled her name as DOILE on her Marriage certificate, Ihve not seen this spelling used anywhere else during my research.

The MATT DOYLE & MARY MCKEOAGH marriage you mentioned sounds very promising.  I will need further information to confirm it is the correct one though and rootsireland could get very expensive

Tara,

To try and answer your questions.  I have searched rootsireland for the marriage searching the entire county of Wicklow with several spelling variations and get nothing that seems to be a possibility.  The closest matching result was actually 10 years too late.

Regarding Matthews profession, he is listed as a Contractor in 1859 on the Wedding certificate of Mary Ann.  On her death certificate in 1906 he is described as a Labourer.  On Elizabeth’s and Margaret’s death certificates in 1890 and 1918 Matthew is listed as a Miner.

We have no family stories from this time to connect to another place, just what I may find while researching.

Thanks for the census suggestion.  I am going to discount it at this time as his daughter in the census is a named Kate born c1863 and a rootsireland search does not work for a mother named Mary.

Wicklow / Doyles of Wicklow, Avoca
« on: Friday 05 September 14 02:02 BST (UK)  »
I have hit a brickwall.  I am looking for any information on the DOYLE family of Avoca, Wicklow.

The information I have from a rootsireland.ie search is that Matthew and Mary DOYLE had
Elizabeth 1838
Margaret 1840
James 1843
Letitia 1846
Catherine 1849

There are two other children that I cannot find a baptism listing for
Mary Ann 1837 (my Great Great grandmother)
Eleanor 1852

I am also unable to find and marriage entry for Matthew DOYLE and Mary MCEWAN.

The records I most want to find are proving to be the ones I can’t find.  Mary Ann’s baptism and the marriage of her parents

Further information:
I have Victorian (Australia) death and marriage records for Mary Ann, Elizabeth, and Margaret that mention the birthplace for Wicklow, Avoca and parents Matthew Doyle and Mary MCKEON / MCEWAN .  The others appear on a passenger list arriving in South Australia in 1858 saying they came for Wicklow.
The MCEWAN name is only connected to the three oldest girls as they married and died in Victoria which has more information on its BMD Certificates.  I am only assuming they the same Matthew and Mary Doyle as the birthplace is the same for all the children I have found and all have connections to South Australia, but did not arrive together.

I live in Australia and am mostly interested in any Irish information that can be found.

Australia / Re: CRAIGEN - Scotland to Australia 1890
« on: Thursday 08 May 14 06:23 BST (UK)  »
The James Craigen mentioned by Ros and Cando above was buried in Brighton Cemetery on Jan 26 1925 age 71.  Also in the same grave are Catherine Robena Craigen age 53 of South Yarra (buried 18 Feb 1946) and Mary Maud O'Brien age 78 of Canterbury (buried 2 May 1973), I would assume these are the daughters mentioned in the obituary.

My access to the Brighton Cemetery register is at the State Library of Victoria which has a copy of microfiche in the genealogy room.

Information from Brighton Cemetery register to 1969 indicates there are three burials in the same grave.  All were residents of Albert Park.
Nov 2nd 1926 Alice Holburn age 45
Mar 31 1930 William Holburn age 79
Jan 6th 1956 Ernest Holburn age 73
